On Monday, former New York Giant wide receiver Plaxico Burress was indicted on charges of possession of a loaded weapon and reckless endangerment…for shooting himself in the leg. Plaxico faces a minimum prison sentence of three-and-a-half years if convicted.
Now, we’ve had our fun with this previously & @ Plax’s expense. At the same time, I’ve spoken words to his defense.
But with city & state officials gunning (no pun intended) for his head, should he be punished with jail time?
Not to throw Donte Stallworth under the bus but he got hit with vehicular homicide & did twenty-four whole days in jail. Sure, I know he got off on a legal technicality, courtesy of the fine work of his high-paid lawyers. Is Cousin Vinny defending Plax?

Not for nothing I’m in the clubs in NY and I don’t need to be hit with a stray bullet cuz some rich asshole is wearing 100K worth of jewels and don’t know what a safety is… Put him in jail for a year, what if that gun went off and didn’t hit him but hit some waitress in the club and she was paralyzed…

Plax is a dumbass, that’s for sure.
But 3.5 years is pretty damn harsh considering that, even though a lot of things could have happened, they didn’t. He shot himself, lost his job, public embarrassment, etc. Hit’em w/the fine and be done instead of having the mayor swoop in & try to make a bigger deal out of it.
He had the misfortune of shooting himself in the wrong city. There was NO WAY Bloomberg was going to let Plax off. Thats why the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS had to let him go like they did.
The kicker is he will be lucky to get the low side of this sentence if he takes this to trail.
And now they might not even let him try to plea out.
Case in point folks — Shyne is STILL lawked up for a crime committed that started off the same.. a gun in a club for self-preservation.
Plex needs to serve some jail time; if the gun went off and killed someone you cared about. You would want the book thrown at him as well. But Bloomberg is using this situation to show his toughness on crime; also to hide the fact he bent every rule possible to break mayoral limits so he can run for another term. A year and a half is a reasonable amount of time for his crime.
I think it’s ridiculous to have to go to jail for accidentally shooting yourself. That being said, jail time may be appropriate for actions of pure stupidity– wearing sweatpants at the club with a gun in the waste band would probably qualify, Plaxico.
Fuck yeah he should be going to jail. Think of all the people that were around him at the time that the gun went off. It is ridiculous to think that he should be let off.
