It’s funny how some folks don’t grade an album by the artist’s delivery, wordplay, intensity or the caliber of the guest shots but instead on its ability to knock in the ride. Dorrough, the former Prairie View A&M University student, takes a page from Southerners like Gucci Mane, Jeezy and even Soulja Boy to concoct his frankly-titled debut on E1 Music, Dorrough Music. And what the Dallas rapper might lack in lyrical prowess he makes up for with his ability to shake a trunk until it unhinges.

But, in all honesty, Dorrough brings nothing new to the table as far as content goes; even his style and delivery get lost in the crowd of swag and trap rappers looting the music industry today. Tracks one through five are dedicated solely to describing one of two things: either how hard he grinds or how bright he shines. “Flashout” is a call to arms for fellow stunna, Mista Mac, who provides a catchy hook that ultimately runs its course after the first chant. “Piece & Chain Swangin’” features another Texas native, Slim Thug who assists in catapulting this track to second single status by throwing some Auto-Tune in for good measure. It may ensure to be a club banger in some regional spots, but it’s nothing you haven’t heard before.

But, as mundane as this record is from the start, tracks like “Never Changed” and “Feel This” add emotion to a release otherwise rattled with rap clichés. On the former, young Dorrough sends a kite to forgotten friends and those who think his newly acquired knot has changed him for the worst. The latter finds Dorrough speaking on his relationship with his daughter and the ills of parenting.

If Dorrough Music were being rated on its ability to shake, rattle and blow a subwooofer, then it would get a magical 5 Cigs. But TSS standards insist upon the importance of content and the overall talent of the MC in question. And unfortunately Dorrough falls victim to many of the stereotypes present in today’s standard rap album. In return, the concepts just aren’t fresh and the songs are far too long. Dorrough Music may look clean on the outside but, the cream on the inside is yet to be seen (PAUSE x 10).
