David Dallas - “Slow Down”

David Dallas is becoming one of my personal favorite up and coming rappers in the game, regardless if the rest of the world is with me or not. The New Zealand native’s upcoming project Something Awesome is shaping up to confirm the title’s inference and is making me anticipate it even more with every step of the way.
His latest song to hit the net showcases the man behind the music with a vulnerability that few current rappers allow themselves to reveal to the listener. Musically, “Slow Down” is a mixture of soft percussion, airy strings and the light, subtle strumming of a guitar that the rapper matches with an equally tedious yet effective tone. On the lyrical tip, the MC digs deep within himself to describe the feeling of inadequacy that haunts him as he is trying to find himself in the world and the music industry by expressing his dissatisfaction with his situation mentally and financially. On the second verse, his honesty hits an all time high when he describes how his career dips have led him to rely on his girl to put food on the table while his insecurities cause him to nearly villainize her for it.
In an age where honest artistry seems to take a backseat to the caricatures that rule our airwaves, David Dallas brings hope that maybe there are still a few out there who aren’t afraid to expose themselves to the world in the realm of Hip-Hop music.
