When stars begin to battle personal demons like addiction, it’s usually late in the game by the time the public knows. The spiral will already have the world’s current favorite entertainer headed down the drain right after the buzz from their last album has subsided. For example, see the latest chronicles of Amy Winehouse & drunken debauchery.
There are a few who manage to show enough resiliency to bounce back. And maybe Whitney is one of those few. Her new single “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” is not Whitney of old. It does show traces, as not many voices on the scene now can match her when it comes to belting out a ballad. What she seems to lack in vocal chops here, she makes up by voicing lyrics that sound strikingly sincere, personal & honest. So while it’s not yet her redemption song, it’s a positive step towards it.

Whitney Houston – “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”

When Marion Jones makes her comeback and brings home the gold, they will stab out your eyes with saccharin coated montages of Marion training hard and going beyond the finish line, arms in the air, exhaling victoriously, and this Whitney Houston song will be the theme tune playing in the background.
When a ball falls off the ledge, it falls and falls and falls deeper into oblivion, however, it will eventually hit rock bottom, known as the nadir, and then it will bounce back up, depending on the momentum of the bounce, it can potentially reach it’s apex after the bounce from the nadir.
So remember this song well, my fickle weed carriers and coat tail riding friends, for it shall bode you good company, like a warm blanket on a cold night, when the harsh chilled wintery winds of life try their best to freeze you out of existence from mainstream society.
But a’yo Gotty, check this out, Did you know Eric B & Rakim were number one in the UK back in 1987 thanks to Michael Jackson, The Jacksons, Bobby Byrd and James Brown? Dunno if you folks in the USA ever got this version, this is taking it back to that whole 4th & Broadway/Island Records era.

@King Petey, you shut the fuck up, HITLER!
Chill.
Didn’t click the link but I’m currently reading Hit Me Fred b/c I want to pick up more concrete info & opinions on JB. My dad’s stories of JB staying local & eating dinner w/them as he toured the chitlin’ circuit & seeing a TV One doc really got my interest going.
@Gotty, you might heard the remix already, I think Universal packaged it as part of the greatest hits set. Back in 1987 that was cutting edge.
It’s funny, because when I saw this Whitney post, I harked back to the mid 80s, her hits, and with Michael Jackson’s death still fresh in my head, it just set off a train of thought of the hits we had back then and I remembered the I Know You Got soul remix with The Jackson 5, James Brown and Bobby Byrd samples, ah life was so much simpler back then.
‘Hit Me Fred’ a good read thus far? I saw that ‘The Night James Brown Saved Boston’ documentary on BBC4 a couple weeks back, intriguing viewing indeed. Learned a lot about the man, the myth and music from that piece alone.
Pete Rock wised us up on the following James Brown click via a bulletin on Myspace, top notch.

Watching footage of him perform & hearing stories, JB was a livewire. Although I think MJ was close & he did trump him in smoothness, I can’t think of any dancer who touches him in terms of energy.
The book is slow for the most part but it’s got a few nuggets laced throughtout that make it worth continuing to read. I’d recommend buying it used or checking it out from a library instead of paying full price.
@Gotty, yep, James Brown, what more can I say about the man that hasn’t already been written or said already, his legacy speaks for itself. Certain artists as they get advanced in age lose that spark, but they ran a concert of him after the documentary, a performance he did for BBC, around 5-6 years ago, and he was blazing up at that stage and rocking the crowd like it was 1969.
I’ll make a note of the book title and keep tabs on it next time I am at the library.
You heard this talk about a James Brown biopic, with Wesley Snipes being primed to play James?
yall wanna a great comeback album please. but probably more good than great. let we see. nevertheless hope
paw dont make fun of my mustache…i wasnt born with gorilla hormones like you.
Blah Blah Blah
Damn it’s been a while. You can tell there’s a big difference in her voice. I chalk it up to age and the issues. It’s good though.
Ha ha. Ya’ll like how I put in “issues”?
