Apologies To The Juiceman
AUDIO By David D. on July 14, 2009 at 3:01 pmA couple of weeks ago, I had to eat crow.
Just after I made fun of OJ Da Juiceman and his Hooked On Phonics-sponsored tweets*, I popped in Bobby Ray’s mixtape and heard the little Gollum straight wreck his guest-verse on the track “I Am The Man.” Say what you want, but Juiceman hopped in his Cadillac (that I’m sure is the color of a Care Bear stool sample) and straight rode the beat. Way to make me look bad, oh purveyor of Vitamin C.
I tried to sweep that verse under the rug as a one-time fluke. You know, broken clocks, correctness and all that.
Then I heard his verse on “Walking On Ice” from Twista’s Category F5 and began to question the meaning of life. By George, he did it again. Juiceman got the coveted third verse spot on the track and delivered. He may not hit you with triple word score adjectives in his 16s, but Juice can use his voice as an instrument to amplify the beat. And really, that’s the bread and butter of he and Gucci’s sound. When you get over the fact that it’s OJ dropping these verses, it’s not hard to appreciate what he adds to each of these tracks.

Post Script: May as well throw this in as well.

*Ahem*
MIA MOTHERFUCKING X! That is all.
* Sidebar: My Mom called me the other day. She said “I’ve been reading your articles. I loved that article you wrote about OJ Simpson!”
SMH. Moms. Gotta love’em.

Moms these days.
OJ’s verse in ‘count dem 100’s’ on “Kool Aid, Kush, and Convertibles” was dope as hell too. Which reminds me of another rapper I never thought I would listen to and enjoy: Rich Boy. I’ve been bumping the shit out of Pac Man and Kool Aid, Kush…
Of course man - OJ is ill. Being a dope rapper is exactly as you described - using his voice as an instrument. Give me that any day over some forgettable guy with clever wordplay. Shit is music after all.
Good looking out on admitting your U-Turn though and the Twista joint was a great example.
Props to the Smoking section as ever for good coverage of all shit.

Really? Really?
When “OJ” writes two lines without using a simile, you can call him an MC.
Until then I won’t pay attention.
Regretting I listened to his verse in this one.
yes really.
oj is re writting the game as far as how we view bars and verses to be structured.
his raps are like haikus from god his adlibs are like laughter from the heavens
all praise due to orenthal james da jewwwwwmaaaayne.

Here’s what I LOVE. When kids claim that rappers that aren’t “lyrical” aren’t “MC’s”. Hm, let’s see, bud. What did Rakim say? Oh, that’s right. “MC means Move the Crowd”. Never was that statement implied as someone that is lyrical. That statement means what it means. So someone like OJ da Juiceman or Soulja Boy are more qualified “MC’s” than what ever boring underground “bring back the ’90’s hip hop” multi-tastic rapper spits (I’m just assuming this is the style of Hip Hop/Rap you’re into). MC also means Master of Ceremonies so going off the actual definition and a Rap Pioneer’s, we can now see that your statement serves no merit. Please pass this message along to all of your anti-fun/stuck in the past friends and tell them the word they’re looking for is “lyricist”, not “MC”, thank you.
..Even though i’ve banned myself from internet commenting ever EVER again, I have to chime in here because this topic is so important:
Barry Washington up there and King Petey…………..
Motherfuckin HELL yeah its about time somebody was saying that shit..
All about THIS: “When kids claim that rappers that aren’t “lyrical” aren’t “MC’s”.”
Oh sHIT i just co-signed the FUCK out of your comment
My work here is done
Juiceman is the future
Gucci is the omnipotent all-seeing ever-present witchdoctor of fucking dopeness
that was a powerful compelling post.
BARRY WASHINGTON is the truth!!! i agree whole heartedly. i still don’t care for Jew-man or Souljah Boy, but I feel you. If I like it, I like it. Screw this analyzing his grammatical structure to find out an MC. Whe I was 14 to 18 this ideal was what I lived by, but nowadays, it is what moves me. Andre 3000 will always be the greatest in my book, but to say other men are not MC’s because they don’t meet your personal criteria is an as intelligent as Rush Limbaigh or Bill O’Reily talking points. More intelligent people realize there are more sides to every discussion than just you own view-point:
“You got one foot in, one foot out
You put your left foot back in and then you shake it all about
You do the hokey pokey til you turn your life around
That’s what it’s all about. 3000 out” Andre 3000
greatest post ever
someone shoot me now!!! Oj is an MC????!!!
@ David D., Oj’s verse on “I am the Man” was HOT GARBAGE!!! Killer Mike should have been given verse 2 on that track and that track would have been an INSTANT classic.
As for you fools who have NO FUCKING CLUE what an MC is….let me help you out.
Is OJ comparable to Killer Mike? FUCK NO
Is OJ comparable to Bun B? FUCK NO
Is OJ comparable to even BUBBA SPARXXX? FUCK NO! (and bubba is not much of an MC himself; more of a decent lyricist)
An MC doesn’t have to be great lyrically but if you have ZERO substance in your rhymes, YOU CAN NOT be considered an MC. DJ’s in a club move a crowd and shout shit over a mic; does that make them MC’s as well? MC’s move the crowd; not the beat of their songs. Soulja Boy’s beats and hooks are catchy; but nobody is gone do what Soulja Boy says. He’s not an MC and OJ is DEFINITELY not an MC.
You can’t half way understand OJ when he is performing live. It sounds like he’s mumbling! OJ is a rapper and that is all. Don’t ever disrespect real MC’s again by putting this guy in the same catagory as other REAL MC’S.
