“The Ghostface Show”
AUDIO By Jason H. on July 2, 2009 at 11:44 amLike many Hip-Hop nerds I did a college radio show. It’s a thankless job especially if you have shitty wattage. Even my friends in the dorms can barely hear the mixes. Only toward the end of my time at the station they got internet streaming, and by then I was graduating - fuckers. One of the cats I hung out with at the station was DJ Teddy King. “How did you come up with Teddy King?” I asked him and he easily replied that it was his real name. For some reason I didn’t believe him but that’s coming from someone with the last name Hortillas. From then on when I saw him I would say his name in full - never Ted, Teddy, or call him by his surname. I only called him Teddy King and it stuck.
Nowadays, he spins at East Village Radio. Now if you never heard of the station, it’s this little nook that sits beside the rest of the storefronts on 1st Avenue in New York. People would just walk past the window and watch people spinning at the internet radio station. Teddy does Boundless Radio there weekly and he recently dropped a mix he did last November called “The Ghostface Show.” Recently compiled for download it’s a mix of his favorite Ghost tracks in addition to a mix by Mondee of underground joints.
After listening to the mix it was a reminder of the good old days in the college student center basement at two in the morning. I got to give props to Teddy King for the refresher course.

Long live the Hip-Hop nerds!!!
lol…I’ll be going back to my college radio station this year….got about 2 years left and I graduate….so I still got time to do what I enjoyed my 1st semester and host a lil show before I go out!
Roc-City had some great college radio, both through WRUR at the University of Rochester and WITR at Rochester Institute of Technology. This is mid to late 90s. DJ Bruce Banner, Chris G’s “Straight from the Underground”, Dorian’s show (can’t place it now)…
for my little part, I was frequenting in the house taking calls and talking ish with DJ Ritalin on the “Hyper Hiphop show.”
Oh yes, good memories in the days before online streaming and podcasting.
LOL @ DJ Ritalin & Hyper Hip-Hop Show
Oh yeah, college radio! I spin on a show down here in New Zealand called Trueschool. Speaking of Ghostface, I had a crazy experience two weeks ago where I ended up Djing for him, lol http://www.shotthen.com/2009/06/24/i-djed-for-ghostface-killah/
WRHU Radio Hofstra University P-5 REPRESENT!!
Carrying heave ass crates up 2 stories for Saturdays 11PM-3AM underground rap radio = best DJ gig of my life.
Hey J! Hope your well!
DJ Bruce Banner from the U of R station (mentioned above) changed my life by bringing the best hip hop to Rochester airwaves, and that is not hyperbole. I know a lot of people appreciated that whole block of music on Thursday and it’s good to know people still remember it.
As for my experience, I had an hour on the local alternative station in my senior year of high school but they weren’t nearly as lax as WRUR, rap wasn’t popular in the suburbs.
Chris G (str8 from the underground) WRUR/WITR was the godfather of college radio in Rochester NY from 1990-2000. There would be no Bruce Banner without the godfather. Shouts also 2 Evy Ev & Jaythreeoooo!!!!
you neve know if there might be a comeback. someway some how. maybe i’ll come back playing banglidesh harmonica music. ha ha ha
much love
