Thank You, Stevie
GENERAL By Contra™ on July 7, 2009 at 5:10 pmTwo words, children. Stevie. Wonder.
Finally. A worthy tribute. Tears flowed, yo. Tears flowed.
Enough has been said over the past week, so let’s not dwell. The King has finally received a fitting send off that touched millions of hearts.
I hope the good folks at BET have been sitting down with notepads handy. Just so that they can understand why they need to just fall into their Black Carpet and roll straight out the door they claim to have broke in.

I haven’t seen such a mawkish state of affairs since the whole Diana fiasco – how the death of a singer, no matter how influential, becomes rolling 24 hour news is beyond me. It’s obviously sad that the guys dead…but let’s have some perspective – Barack Obama’s out signing nuclear non-proliferation treaties with Russia and the news is broadcasting an entertainer’s funeral – what does that say about our news values?
That shit was really heartfelt.
Stevie been the best, MJ or no MJ…bonus, Stevie didn’t diddle kids (ra-llegedly), turn white, or make himself into a middle-aged white lady. Stevie = The King. Period.
^ As much as I love Stevie, he wasn’t half the entertainer that MJ was. Sing, dance, act, write, produce…there’s a reason MJ is getting all the love he’s getting right now.
You can focus on the extra’s if you want, but Mike was the best…EVER.
Magic’s joke about MJ and KFC was truly heartfelt, so was Brooke Shields words. And Stevie’s performance….”I never dreamed you’d leave in summer” made me realize that the GOAT really is gone. This tribute was worthy. As far as BET goes, Contra, I don’t even know why you mentioned these clowns.
And in closing, I just want to say, that we can say or feel however we want about Al Sharpton. But that brotha killed it with his speech!
Anybody know the whereabouts of Frank DiLeo aka Tuddy Cicero, he was there with Michael during the halcyon 80s era and wot not.
Al Sharpton, Feed The World came out before We Are The World, like duh, foolio!
i was hopping mj would moonwalk out any minute and just say, “its a joke, i got all ya” .. sad times, happy memories…0ne!!
http://bit.ly/8RrXA
I don’t give a fuck Mike is the GOAT. When people that inspired him concede that, thats “close thread on that topic”
Al Sharpton earned one today. Made me remember he’s a Reverend.
You all ever seen this Bollywood rendition of Thriller? Pure genius, Bollywood Zindabad!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWit8ckPkxg
hahaha i remember when that rendition came out, i was just talking about it with dude from quickcheck by my crib
I haven’t seen a service like this since Princess Diana. No shots but Princess DI didn’t really interest me outside of her charity work. This one meant much more to me since I grew up listening to various MJ and Jackson 5 records thanks to my Mom. RIP Mike.
GOAT Status !
He isn’t my favorite all-time but he is the greatest all-time PERIOD
“The King has finally received a fitting send off that touched millions of hearts.”
^^
One of the realist things you ever wrote!
stevie wonder is the greatest artist of our generation…hands down.
and fuck bet that station is for white folks who need to perpetuate the sterotypes that america has already implemented on blacks.
I thought BET was like FUBU?
wouldn’t it have been great if “we are the world” was performed by all the original artists! that would have been the ultimate tribute to MJ
Damn!!!
Stevie had me crying, from those first keys of ‘I Can’t Help It’…to then segue into ‘Never Dreamed You’d Leave’..that in itself summed it up for me.
Beautiful!!
Smokey ‘kids come up to me saying ‘you singing MJ’s song’ classic!!!
That has to be THE greatest farwell for THE best that EVER did it (no room for argument IMO).
Once again thank you Mr Jackson and RIP.
It’s all love…
Anyone got the audio from this afternoon’s performances?
More specifically John Mayer playing “Human Nature”?
@DG http://www.zshare.net/audio/62358218774610d5/
Stevie was spectacular.
Can’t even front, things got a little dusty for your boy at times during that ceremony.
sherm said it best a little harsh but i would lose it if stevie died all time goat hands down

That John Meyer version of Human Nature was woeful, the best tribute to the track I heard is the one my Miles Davis (and his dodgy mullet haircut). Here you go:-

I thought Stevie, Sharpton and Brooke Shields were the highlights of the service. I’m really glad that I got to watch it live – it’s not very often that someone that has had the effect that Michael Jackson had on culture is memorialized like this – everything that everyone has been saying is true – he will live on through his music. RIP
Premo better get MSG for his memorial service….I mean Michael Jackson was the king of “pop” music but Waxmaster C is the creator of the New York sound the reason why this and every other blog exists
James Brown made a more lasting and substantial impact on music and none of this fanfare existed. probably because he stayed black
@Why? Michael Jackson was black, but what’s that got to do with anything?
@ P… you are an Internet Goddess like no other. Thanks.
Good looks on that Royce joint TC.
James Brown made a more lasting and substantial impact on music and none of this fanfare existed. probably because he stayed black
=================================
That’s fuckboy talk.
@ Paw… I’m actually a John Mayer fan. I was impress nonetheless.
I told someone the other day, MJ > James. Not in a disrespectful way. James was a masterful performer, trendsetter & a workhorse. But MJ was a greater dancer & singer. Also, if you really really trace back, James made more singles/45’s than actual albums. Mike had his share of completed albums under his belt, the majority of which still play strong.
@Douglas, yeah he is a good artist, I just don’t think the guitar solo was anything special. However, I guess I am being some what harsh and should acknowledge that he had to keep it subdued because of the nature of the event.
Michael Jackson is the greatest,
Prince, Stevie or James Brown will ever achieve the global cultural impact that Michael did.
Michael perfected the art of pop music during the 80s, nobody will ever achieve this feat again.
You can’t compare anybody with him, because there isn’t anybody like him, and never will be.

james brown is the reason this whole black music shit started young boys
@providence
I believe most (or so I would hope) recognize what you mentioned.
But when it comes to the entire and complete package of an artist (i.e. voice, stage presence/show, dancing, music produced, charisma, etc)…
MJ is it.
He was outstanding in every area.
(And as a fan of music, its history, and its artists… I say that with absolute respect)
anybody got a rapidshare/megaupload link to download the service?

Great song…I love this song…it’s one of my favorite Stevie joints…Stevie and Michael were two of the greatest singers ever music has had in the 20th century….
STEVIE CAN “SAING” FA REAL…..
ANOTHA TIME,
MALLY
Man all of this HATE talk on Micheal…
show some love the man was a legend…
I think the song stevie chose was fitting. Its actually an extended version of the song. The lyrics he chose to extend the verse is so deep and perfect for the song itself. Stevie is truly a genius as well as michael. I downloaded it and its not extended. I love the song it means a lot personally to me because I lost someone in summer as well. I enjoyed the ceremony and just loved this song in particular to all the ones that were sung.
Can’t lie Stevie got me choked up…. I’ve had “They won’t go when I go” on repeat all day. Needless to say, I’m not as upbeat as usual, but truly an amazing song(s) from an amazing musician. Perfect for the moment too
@ providence.
U do know that Premo is from Houston? So your “new york” sound isn’t really new york.
who ever labeled the video on youtube is a moron, there are no excuses for calling this song never can say goodbye……
@Baby
Of course Stevie never had the acclaim Michael had, but Songs in the Key of Life > Thriller
