Since there’s an obvious elephant in the room, let me, “the new guy”, be the one to point it out. New material from Hip-Hop’s “worst enemy,” better known as Soulja Boy, leaked a few days ago. And honestly, I like it.

It is true that I’ve never purchased an album from the 18-year-old multimillionaire, but that doesn’t change the fact that I enjoy more than a handful of dude’s records. By saying this, I understand that all credibility of my future posts will almost surely go out the window, yet it’s a risk I’m willing to take. While he is the furthest thing from the second coming of Scarface or Bun B, one thing the kid has many of peers lack is an intense work ethic.

If he’s not clowning labelmates or bullying people on Twitter (meltdowns too, I guess), he’s always managing to keep himself relevant by making videos such as these, which is the exact reason he was signed in the first place. Also don’t forget he has a deal with YouTube padding his bank account with each click. So really, let this marinate for a moment. Between a park and a parking lot, there isn’t too much to this video. But with views nearing 600,000, that makes for a nice additional check at the end of the month.

If anything, he’s comfortable with himself and doesn’t associate with the notions that he is the reason for the genre’s supposed decline. Thinking back to 2005, Jeezy was known as the artist who put a bullet to Hip-Hop’s figurative head with his oversaturation of coke filled rhymes and “lack of lyrical prowess” (whatever that means). Four years later, everybody loves Jeezy.

At the end of the day, I’m not trying to make anyone a fan of DeAndre Way because everyone has an opinion like everyone has an…well, you know the rest. I am, however, placing this along with those “handful of dude’s records” I mentioned a few sentences ago.
