Poison Pen - “Facebreaker”
AUDIO By Khalid Strickland on July 30, 2009 at 3:23 pmBefore finding success in our respective trades, rapper Poison Pen and I have crossed paths for years in the rowdy streets of our hometown, Brooklyn. Now we chop it up backstage at events like Rock The Bells, bent from complimentary spirits, and discuss how far we’ve come. My big homie may have toured the world with Immortal Technique, lent his voice to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and traded bars with MF Doom and M.O.P., but Poison Pen remains that humble dude from Bed-Stuy.
“There are 300 million people in this country and most people could care less what you’re doing,” Pen once told me. “Eminem sold 5 million records, that’s dope. But the other 295 million people that live in this country don’t give a fuck. So it don’t matter, you’ve got to stay grounded. You got to stay grinding. I ain’t better than nobody, I just put it down.”
Poison Pen puts it down indeed on “Facebreaker,” a rough-and-tumble joint from his upcoming album, The Money Shot. With a plodding, organ-driven beat that provokes thuggery, Pen and his man Swave Sevah spit ass-whuppin’ bars. Kimbo Slice could use this song as entry music for one of his back-alley brawls. The hook is BK all day; more of a threat than a rhyme: “You shouldn’t throw stones if you live in a glass house/and if you’ve got a glass jaw you should watch your mouth/’cause I’ll break your face.” Got to love this joint’s single-mindedness. It’s a foregone conclusion that I’ll cop The Money Shot but Swave Sevah’s verse on “Facebreaker” has me on the lookout for his full-length jump-off as well. The next time we speak I’ve got to thank Poison Pen for keeping it gutter instead of catering sweets for the mainstream. That other shit gives me cavities.
Poison Pen’s The Money Shot drops 8.4 on Gold Dust.
