Remember how powerful this tandem used to be? Sure they link up every so often to submit a banger here and there but when we they were one another’s main source for heat, you knew the results were surefire. The first time the world bore witness to “Deep Cover,” they defined a rap subgenre. And they continued to do so well through the course of the decade. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s one for you so-called ballers.
Above is a picture of designer Scott Amron’s Split-Ring-Key. If looking nifty wasn’t enough, Scott is selling a 30% stake in the patent. Considering this ingenious product is so simple and only now being released, you’d be Eddie Griffin not to at least get @ dude.
Josh Spear with the oop.

Free is the new $9.99. In the past, a free album giveaway from an artist raised red flags, implying substandard material unworthy of the Sam Goody. But in 2009, with mixtapes, Rapidshare and downloadable singles threatening to kill albums, giving away a full-length under the auspices of name recognition is a good strategy. The key is, can you deliver the goods to turn heads? On Kid Daytona’s Come Fly With Me, the answer is an emphatic yes. Combining modern sounding beats with a never-ending flow of punchlines, he’s made a project that’s certain to satisfy his fans and win over new ones.
What’s most impressive about Come Fly With Me is its consistency; there’s nary a weak track to be found over the album’s 14 cuts. Kid Daytona proves himself to be fully adept at the varying styles of backpack infused pop-rap. Read the rest of this entry »

Admittedly, I’m not too familiar with who Black Deniro is, but apparently he has enough pull in Philly to get Gillie The Kid, Cassidy and Beanie Sigel on a track together (Gillie has beefed with both Cass and Beans in the past, by the way). Over one of those repetitive beats that allow for an artist to spit aimlessly about Read the rest of this entry »
A couple of weeks ago, I had to eat crow.
Just after I made fun of OJ Da Juiceman and his Hooked On Phonics-sponsored tweets*, I popped in Bobby Ray’s mixtape and heard the little Gollum straight wreck his guest-verse on the track “I Am The Man.” Say what you want, but Juiceman hopped in his Cadillac (that I’m sure is the color of a Care Bear stool sample) and straight rode the beat. Way to make me look bad, oh purveyor of Vitamin C.
I tried to sweep that verse under the rug as a one-time fluke. You know, broken clocks, correctness and all that.
Then I heard his verse on “Walking On Ice” from Twista’s Category F5 and began to question the meaning of life. By George, he did it again. Juiceman got the coveted third verse spot on the track and delivered. He may not hit you with triple word score adjectives in his 16s, but Juice can use his voice as an instrument to amplify the beat. And really, that’s the bread and butter of he and Gucci’s sound. When you get over the fact that it’s OJ dropping these verses, it’s not hard to appreciate what he adds to each of these tracks.

MIA MOTHERFUCKING X! That is all.

Skillz is back with the second installment of his Hip-Hop Confessions series. It’s a toss up between the two ladies this time for who took the cake.

OnCue linked up with TPPS & IllRoots to present Cueyfornication. Sounds familiar right?
