And Now, The Weed Taxation Begins…
EDUTAINMENT By Gotty™ on July 22, 2009 at 10:00 amUnless you reside under a mossy rock, everyone in the U.S. knows that Cali is facing a massive budget deficit that affects each city in the state. The city of Oakland is doing their part to alleviate some of that financial burden by taking the legislative first steps to impose a tax on marijuana.
Oakland’s bid to become the first U.S. city to tax proceeds on medical marijuana passed Tuesday by a landslide vote.
About 80 percent of voters chose to impose the tax on Oakland’s medical marijuana facilities, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
“It is important because the city of Oakland is facing a massive deficit like many jurisdictions in California,” said Steve DeAngelo, a leader of one of the city’s cannabis clubs. “And we decided to step up to the plate and make a contribution to the city in a time of need.”
DeAngelo, one of the people who led the effort to get the tax approved, said his business will now have to pay more than $350,000 from the new tax next year.
Yep, they’re taxing that Keyshia Cole.

Hell yeah,
This will most likely trickle down to other cities in the CA in the case that the revenues are quite substantial. And substantial they will be.
Quite honestly, it doesn’t make that much of a difference due to the fact that you could smoke weed damn near legally out here in the CA anyways, but this move makes it official. It’s good to be here.
Yeah, but wait til they start cracking skulls on weed like they do cigs lol.
I got a serious case of California envy.
Happy to see the progressive reformation of marijuana laws in cali. Hopefully NY follows the lead. Wishing I lived in the city of toke-land.
On the real… didn’t we see this coming years ago? I’m actually surprised they waited until they were in real financial trouble before taxing marijuana.
am i misinterpreting this? this doesn’t even seem that badass unless it is a step toward decriminalization
right?
You know they broke when cats are getting get out of jail free cards cause the state can’t afford to keep them locked in.
I GOT FIVEEEEEEEEEE ON IT
OAKLAND
gotty is right. this weed issue is a tricky one. everyone wants it decriminalized but if/when that happens youre gonna have big corporations taking it over from the current growers, and then the huge taxs that will be put on it, like cigs are now.
Actually, clubs in SF were placing taxes on trees 1 to 2 years ago. It just wasn’t a voted-on ordinance, but I think a pre-emptive move b/c they assumed they’d be taxed soon.
Takes some getting used to, spending 52.50 when you were used to scraping up 50.
Anyway, the hometown (Oakland) made me proud today, if only for making national news without Murder by cop/ murder OF cop/ ass beating of salon customer/ whistle tips on cars / sideshows, etc…
