“Let me take you on a ride wit’ me late in the night
And you give you my thoughts, another day in the life
And they all scattered out, so niggas can spare wit’ me
Last night I had two bitches in bed wit’ me
I’m thinking about how no other nigga compare wit’ me cuz I got
A whole ‘nother two bitches in here wit’ me
One of them got her head in my lap, d!ck in her throat
The other one got a plate in the back, sniffing some coke
Think about it
Niggas don’t realize, we dying every minute, we breathe in like livings of disease
They give you when you conceived
I don’t know if I’m pouring out my heart or my mind
I just know that these words ain’t a part of my grind
I’m thinking about New Orleans
The recent events that got all my people sleeping in tents
Little street niggas leasing a Bent
Tryin’ to keep up with Meech
Priests is freaks, preachers is pimps
Petty larcen, crooks
Bush getting less votes than Kelly Clarkson
Uck!
The sign said it, we might as well let time set it
Tryin’ to define prejudice is easy as tryin’ to find an online predator
Eyes red as I drive feelin’ like I’m negative
And positive
While I’m at the devil and God’s wedding
It’s pornographic
Wit’ my good d!ck in a bad puss, contractin’
Wit’ the foot in my casket.”

Royce Da 5’9″ from Trife Diesel’s “Powerful Minds” off the album Better Late Than Never
Although he’s always been campaigned as a laudable rhymeslayer, too often is Royce’s insight and detail in his verses overlooked. Dare we say he can give fellow Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden a run for his money when it comes to painting shocking pictures derived from the inner psyche? “A Part Of Me” can attest to that, which probably inspired this verse. Which may be a little dated given the Katrina references. Let Trife Diesel tell it though, it’s Better Late Than Never.

royce is the truth. and good look leslie, ive been waiting for that!
“Let’s be Frank like Sinatra…”
Sorry in advance, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say I’m a Slaughterhouse stan. If that twists your tits the wrong way, then ignore the rest of this post.
Royce is brilliant. Sorry. Brilliant, with a capital B. There’s a reason he and Em had ‘mutual admiration’ back in 96/97. Greatness attracts greatness. That’s what makes Slaughterhouse great. You have 4 MC’s equally vying for attention and each one pulls his weight in words. Royce’s style is arguably very different from his ‘House brethren. Here me out on this. Budden is introspectively lyrical and says “Pause” too much, Crooked I is basically on a plateau of metaphors and songs that make you think, “is this fucking guy even human?”, and Joell Ortiz is Joell Ortiz. Example: the ‘Never Sleep’ video. I love that shit and Ortiz stays in his own lane.
But Royce is always making me guess. Lyrically, he’s up there with Jay, Em, ‘Face, Nas, and Rakim, or so I think, but where Royce shines bright is his conceptual brilliance. Everything in his mind comes out as a concept, and I respect that. He’s not spitting a hot line or thinking about having the dopest verse, he’s TELLING YOU A STORY. Him and Fabolous can do that shit, except Fab’s singing to the ladies and pretending to be Scarface. Royce is on his next level shit, and I think Joell, Joe, and Mr. Squiggly Line are bringing out the best in him, and I’m fucking excited to see him succeed.
Oh, and he’s funny as hell when he’s drunk, too. Just don’t drink too much, homie. No more DUI’s, hah.
no doubt, Nick.. Royce is just on something else. I don’t know if there’s a MC in the game more than Royce at the present. You mention he’s on the same level as Jay, Em Face, Nas and Ra. I can agree with all of them with the exception of Jay. People can hate if they want but Jay just doesn’t show me the growth as a Nas or Face. Em hasn’t even shown growth in my book. Ra is on a whole different level so I’ll skip him (bow down to that dude). But much like Nas and Face, Royce isn’t afraid to be different. Dude spits his heart out and there are times he doesn’t even rhyme. He just gives it to you raw and you take it as you want. He’s the meaning of dope in my book and as you said the others will allow him to shine and show just how dope he is….
Thank you. I should comment here more. You make good points, and I agree all the way through. The only point I’ll re-direct is Jay-Z. I like Jay. As an artist as executive. I know I might catch a verbal bitchslap for that, but Mr. Carter knows how to find talent. And every now and then, Jay knows how to exploit it, business wise. D.O.A and Kanye? Then toss Ye-weezy on ‘Run This Town’. He straight power-moved Chicago and made that an NY anthem, Roc status. That’s where Jay-Z gets his poker chips. Everything he does is a reflection of his business acumen. To me, that’s very important to being an artist. That’s the difference between a Jay-Z and a Memphis Bleek. Can Jay compare to Rakim, Scarface, Bun B, 3000, or Royce? Probably not, but he’s got tha bidness down.
But Joe Budden would have Def Jammed his ass. Just sayin’. I gotta stay loyal to my fav’s.
Hey Gotty, need any TSS writers? I’m feeling my confidence today and I think I can drop some know-ledge. Maybe not every day, but I’m sure I can tip back a couple 211′s and pretend I’m a blogger semi consistently. Otherwise, I’m going to begin contaminating your comment section (YCC!) with my awesomeness.
Err, YCS. Maybe I shouldn’t be tipping back 211′s. My bad.
Death Is Certain = Classic….
