Filter’s new feature with Mos Def will be hitting stands and according to the cover it will also house something about Calvin and Hobbes. That is to say, I will be buying it on account of Calvin and Hobbes is the bee’s knees, but also because Mos Def — God love’em — is a hot and sexy, sensitive yet grizzled man-actor MC with a skyrocket sense of humor. Always liked the man, always will. But the pull-quotes on this joint raise some eyebrows (as they should for any well-designed article) and are really what will draw me to news stands to continue to support Filter and the hemorrhaging print industry…

“You can positively affect and change a social circumstance with art, and it’s vital that a change happens now.”

I’d venture to say artists have been repeating this sentiment on repeat-record groove-skip since the dawn of time. People — chief among them, artists — have been calling for and affecting change for forever and ever, amen. Cavemen etching oxen into rock formations talking about “This hunting and gathering shit is for the birds. Let’s make fire and whatnot.” Boom. Change.

“There’s a difference between wanting to be the president to help people and wanting to be the president to ride in Air Force One.”

Well for fuck’s sake… if you run for president and don’t think you want to help people… jump. Jump from Air Force One without a parachute. What man(/woman) in their right mind wouldn’t want to help people if they were elected BY the people? No one takes office thinking they’d like to eat babies and knock around waffle-bottom skeezers 23/7. And on the 24th hour, he/she rests. Every president wants to help people — some just happen to want to help rich people and some just end up helping themselves.

“I’m an artist, man; I put that shit on my W-2.”

Baaaaaller…

I just put “suit” on my W-2. Claim my windowless office as a dependent. I’d like to put something fresh like “artist” when I file my taxes… maybe “Kenny Loggins connoisseur” or “Sister Christian car singer” or “Andre 3000 lyric memorizer.”

“It’s one thing to be the greatest; it’s another thing to be necessary. The best are the most necessary: those who take less than they give and love more than they hate.”

And all the Lord’s people said “Amen.” And this is why I’ve always liked Mos Def. Always will.
