That Time Around…

As more fans continue to stumble upon Michael Jackson material that’s been available unbeknown to them, it’s time to revisit one particular track that never gets celebrated in the Hip-Hop community as it should. Never officially released as single, this beefer for the HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I album (which also holds rank as the highest selling multi-disc ever. Can we say King?) pit two legends of their respective fields together to create extraordinary music. But aside from the indisputable factor that “This Time Around” does feature the late-great MJ & The Notorious B.I.G., the track is epic for a couple of other reasons as well.
MJ Made His Choice
1995. A time when the so-called East Coast Vs. West Coast war was heating up and cats were forced to choose between Biggie and Pac like they were running for president, MJ decided Frank White was more suitable for studio time than Mr. Thug Life could ever be. And this wasn’t some leftover Biggie blend à la “Unbreakable” from 2001’s Invincible. Chris Wallace passed away in 1997. They builded on the song, topically and musically. It’s just a clear testament that Mike preferred Life After Death over All Eyez On Me (if he ever even heard it.)
B.I.G. Exercised His Innner-Nigga
If the FCC wanted to force the issue, HIStory very well could’ve have sported a parental advisory sticker. (Do remember the “fuckin” from “Scream,” his duet with sister Janet.) Fed up with the media’s (there’s that word again) feverish attacks on him, especially coming out of the child abuse scandal, Mike Jack released some aggression with the lyrics “This time around, I’m taking no SHIT…” (twice). Sure the average American probably uses “shit” 40X in a daily commute to work but for Michael Jackson — the supreme global humanitarian, a.k.a. the real life Ronald McDonald, a four-letter word was a little jaw-dropping.

Bad Boy: Bad influence to all artists.
Who knows, the presence of B.I.G. may have influenced him to get a little loose in studio. Maybe they shot dice in black hoodies while waiting on the song to finish mixing. Lil’ Cease may come through with the story as the months roll by.

P.S. For what it’s worth, Shaq appeared on a song as well, but it sucked.

anyone got a link for the whole HIStory album?
I remember playing this on repeat as a youngin’ when the album first came out. It was really surprising to hear big and michael jackson on the same track at the time. Also, it was even more surprising to hear Michael cuss on said track haha.
“It’s just a clear testament that Mike preferred Life After Death over All Eyez On Me (if he ever even heard it.)”
Clear? Enh.
Speak up sonny…
lol.
“Also, it was even more surprising to hear Michael cuss on said track haha.”
Word.
And jdn… please pick up the album (pay for it) if possible.
The way these “people” are getting into the mix. I think MJ (we are going to find out) was far from broke… but I would not take any chances with today’s developments.
We need to make sure that his kids are taken care of.
That said, this is TSS… lol. I am sure someone will oblige (unless they do not out of mad respect).
When BIG and MJ did it you knew it was major….
for some funny ass shit peep this….
Ideal: stars Johnny Vegas as Moz, a small-time, hash only, drug dealer in Manchester. Each episode is set within the confines of the flat, which he rarely steps out of, he shares with his girlfriend Nicki. He is constantly visited by, and treats with contempt, his varyingly bizarre customers, his supplier (a bent cop only known as PC) and a silent man with a cartoon mask stuck to his head.

Dude, Thriller is about to sell 25 million more copies. Mike’s kids are gonna be alright.
MJ cussed quite a bit. You heard Morphine? lol.
“Demerol…Demerol….O God, he’s taking Demerol!”
But before and after that he says “shit” , “bitch” and quite possibly fuck.
Brooklyn ftw, btw.

The world had to wait for Michael Jackson to die to appreciate him, myself included.
By the way, to elaborate a bit on the Notorious B.I.G. session, it was kinda like this. Michael used to call people to ask them to participate on albums. It was interesting knowing that nearly anyone on the planet would come to the phone if it were Michael calling. Anyway, I heard rumors that B.I.G. was going to come, and I was excited about that! I knew that I would be the one to record that, as I had recorded nearly all of that tune, “This Time Around”.
So, Dallas and I were expecting him any minute, and pretty much on time, Notorious strolls in. He was quite an imposing figure when he walked in, as he was quite popular at the time. I had no idea what to expect from him in terms of attitude, but he seemed nice when he walked in. No problem. But almost immediately, he blurted out, “Yo, Dallas, can I meet Mike?” To which, Dallas replied that he thought so. Biggie went on to talk about how much this opportunity meant to him, as Michael was his hero. Anyway, Dallas tells him that we’re going to lay down the rap first, so Biggie heads in the booth, we get some headphone levels and get ready to start recording.
So, we hit the big red button (on a Sony 3348 machine), and away we go. During his first take, Dallas and I looked at each other, because it was spot on. wow. I was impressed, and so was Dallas. We listened back, and Dallas was like, “Wow, I think we got it”. As I recall, we took another take for good measure, but I’m fairly certain that we ended up using the first take. So, Notorious comes in, and asks if he can meet Michael now. We sent word to the back room where Michael was working that Biggie was finished and wanted to meet him.
Simply for security, Michael’s security would enter and make sure that no one was in the room that shouldn’t be, and once that was confirmed (it was just me, Biggie and Dallas), Michael came in. Biggie nearly broke out in tears…I could tell how much this meant to him. Well, Michael could have this effect on anyone, even the most hardcore rappers! Biggie was tripping up on his words, bowing down and telling Michael how much his music had meant to him in his life. Michael was, as always, very humble and kept smiling while Biggie just went on and on how much he loved Michael. I watched Biggie just become this big butterball of a man, and it was really very sweet to witness. After all, we are all just people.
Michael finally asked to hear what we had done, and we popped it up on the big speakers and let her go. Michael LOVED it and was excited to tell Biggie that! “Oh, let’s hear it again”, I recall Michael saying, and we listened again. Michael just loved it…and thanked Biggie for coming all the way from Philadelphia. Biggie asked rather sheepishly whether he could get a photo, and Michael agreed. A shot was taken, we listened again, and Michael thanked Biggie. Michael said goodbye and stepped out, leaving Biggie standing there looking completely stunned.
It will always remain a great, great memory.

@ NDiamonds,
THANKS for posting Ideal. never heard of it but always looking for new series to check out.. bout to download a few now and watch them this week sometime. Appreciate it!
Most of those Michael links (if not all) have been blocked.
Michael Jackson is amazing and his music will still influence people for decades to come.
Whitney Houston has a new record due out 9/1 by the way, you can preorder it here: http://www.amazon.com/New-Release-Whitney-Houston/dp/B001AQTWF2
Probably had something to do with the fact that Pac had criticised MJ in the media for supposedly not supporting the community that he came from too.
And people are passing around links to download MJ’s music in this post? Damn, show some fucking respect.
