Daily Funk – “Our Sound”
AUDIO By Corey Bloom on July 9, 2009 at 11:04 pmKRS might scold me for my choice of words, but I really do love everything Brazilian. I spent four days in Sao Paulo and it changed me forever. Admittedly, I’m more on a first date status with the culture but let’s call it love at first sight. The allure of the women, the beaches and lush terrain, their food and philosophy on life (except for the whole caste system thing which I can’t get down with) are all desirable features. But, it’s the music that grips my heart.
It’s their rhythms and percussion, the energy and excitement compared with the seductive and serene. Everything about their sound I love, and I have no idea what they are saying. It’s crazy for a person who holds lyrics so dear to say, but it’s almost as if the words are secondary. You don’t just hear Brazilian music, you feel it.
The good people at Strut records have just released a new compilation entitled Black Rio 2, which focuses on 70’s Brazilian Funk and Soul. By no means are these the quintessential Brazilian selections, in fact they’re probably more like B-sides, but you get the groove. Check out the album and if you’re looking for a good platform to jump off from some Jorge Ben never fails.

caste system ?
im from brazil and what is that?
I was referring the racial classifications, economic divide and subsequent lack of upward mobility in society. Maybe caste system is an outdated term, but you can’t deny the that such a thing doesn’t exist.
yooooo……this mix is highly dope!
