As you all know, I got got. At first, I was in shock over the iPod, camcorder and GPS. Then it hit me that I’d put my Xbox 360 in the trunk to take to UPS to sent back to Microsoft to replace my device that was suffering from the Red Ring of Death. Of course the tambourine tossers took it.
Now, I’m in the market for a new gaming console. My initial reaction was to just replace my Xbox. I still have the hard drive so all I need is a used arcade version that runs for $169 at Game Stop. I also have a few games and both controllers along with my Guitar Hero guitar. So I’m set, right?
Then Sherm and Sinclair were all in my Twitter ear (ll) telling me that I should go with a PS3. While the prospect of a Blu-Ray player is nice now, I know that it will go on sale eventually when the Blu-Ray gets more popular. Plus the $399 price tag is hard to swallow. Yet, those two were telling me I’d love the PS3. They also pulled my coat to the fact that the PS3 now has a bundle at Best Buy for $399 that includes two games. That along with a 10 percent off car could make the console more affordable.
But I’m hesitant. I’ve enjoyed my Xbox 360 and wouldn’t mind going back to old faithful. And I’m worried that talks of a price cut could mean I’d buy a PS3 like a week before it gets $100 cheaper which is one of the most frustrating things that could happen to a human being. Are the PS3 graphics that much better anyway?
So I’m calling on the TSS fam for answers. I know where Sherm and Darius stand, but I want some more insight before I make that plunge. And if you really want me to get a Playstation, don’t hesitate to drop some pennies in the collection plate on the way out.

First of all, I’m a PS3 owner. Had mine for over a year now. The only reason to buy a PS3 in my opinion is if there are exclusive games on it that you want.
Don’t let the Blu-Ray hype push you in the PS3′s direction, it’s definitely nice to have but I only own 3 Blu-Ray movies. Most of em are too expensive for me to consider actually buying them. Plus player prices are going down.
Graphic quality isn’t that different and most games are on both systems. So look at the exclusives, that’s the only thing that should push you to a PS3 if you’re considering it.

Regarding the online shit, XBOX Live often gets games a while before they show up on the PSN. XBOX Live also has a better interface, friends list, and easier to join games and shit.
I’m a big games fan and still have no reason to cop a PS3. Been had the 360 (with the HD-DVD add-on) though.
So basically, my advice is to look at the games and DO YOU.

As for your question…I own a PS3 and I love it but the only games I’ve played have been PS3 exclusives (Little Big Planet, MGS4). I’m not a big gamer so the blu ray was my main reason for copping. I’m a huge movie head. My neighbor owns both though and he swears by 360 and the way PS3 sales are flopping it shouldn’t be long before they drop the prices.

@David: I just so happen to own both (Yes, I ball hard) (pause), online interaction on the 360 is LEAP YEARS ahead of the PS3 online interface. Outside of that, the consoles are pretty similar. I personally prefer the controller on the PS3 over the 360 controller.

Sony should beware — Activision chief is not simply playing games

Bobby Kotick and a partner bought the once-struggling Activision for $440,000 in 1991, at a time when it was losing $30 million on $10 million in revenues. Now the world’s biggest independent computer games company, it has a market value of $16 billion (£10 billion) and operating profits of $179 million in the first quarter on sales of $981 million.
Activision overtook Electronic Arts last July when it was in effect taken over by Vivendi of France in a deal where Vivendi injected World of Warcraft into the company for a 56 per cent stake. With such success, Mr Kotick, who runs the business from Beverly Hills, can probably get away with saying anything, which, soon enough, he does.
The target is Sony, the once-dominant hardware maker. “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,” he says.
It is not a very subtle hint, although Mr Kotick says his company paid $500 million to Sony in royalties and other goods last year, which “probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made”. Actually, Sony’s games division lost $597 million last year, and Mr Kotick seems to think it may have to risk more losses if the £299.99 PlayStation 3 is to develop.

To illustrate the point, Mr Kotick stands on a plastic skateboard that turns out to be the controller for Tony Hawk: Ride — the company’s attempt to reignite the well-worn franchise. Using motion and infra-red sensors, the board detects movements in both the player’s body and feet, and speed is generated by swiping a foot on the floor next to the board. It is hoped the title will be a blockbuster later this year.
“Such a physical interface could be ideal for Sony,” he says, building up the sales pitch, before he warns that he will “generate better returns on invested capital” on the Wii and the Microsoft console. If he can persuade Sony to bend to his will, then it will be a sign of how far the power in the computer games industry has changed.

Just puttin’ this out there: if you set up a wireless connection in your crib, the 360 can read music and movies off the computer. Fantastic for folks who hit them torrent sites rather than Blockbuster as far as the movies go, plus you can give your games their own OST. Not sure you can do all that on a PS3.

i had the same choice last month…replace my Red ring of death 360 with a new 360 or a Ps3? after weighing everything up, i chose 360. the new 360s don’t have the red ring problem. plus they are cheaper. plus there are more quality games available for the system. lastly, i read this shit about activision threatening to pull out of ps3 production cos its costs them too much. whether or not they actually end up doing that remains to be seen, but the fact they are considering it doesn’t sound that inviting. the Ps3 has a couple of advtantages…free online play and blu-ray. but i think the 360′s pros outweight these. as far as performance goes, its hard to notice and difference between the graphics of the two systems. if anything, many in the industry say the 360 has the edge anyways.

If you’re into online gaming I would say 360…much broader audience…but if you’re a movie buff and really like the Blu Ray – it’s a good deal for the PS3…not too many games have been made to really maximize the potential of the PS3 yet, so gaming wise they’re about the same.

Well i can tell you that Xbox 360 is still the leading console for online play and exclusive downloadable content. Not to mention the massive game library. If you are looking for the 5-7 games that you can only find on the PS3 then by all means go for it. Graphics are the same, dont let these Xbox haters sway you in the direction of a half ass blu-ray player. Are you really gonna buy Blu-Ray discs @ the price that they are at anyway?
360. Sorry; Sony’s so last year it ain’t funny. Microsoft’s reversed the trend of Sony getting all of the exclusives and further; Marvel vs Capcom is coming to XBL wayyyy before Sony gets it (along w/other exclusive games and extra content). As the previous poster said; if you can find and purchase the 5-7 exclusives that the PS3 offers; then go do you; but for my money; I’d get the 360 @ Best Buy with the extended warranty jawn (forget the Microsoft warranty). That Best Buy black tie warranty jawn lets you swap the unit out no questions asked as long as you hold the receipt; and each time I swap it out they offer to extend the warranty for another 12 piece. NO problems.

I’ve been 360 since it came out. I played PS3, but the 360 controller and game library > PS3. The fact that Xbox is a “developer’s console”, it’s got better exclusives, it’s got HALO, and the red ring of death isn’t as big of an issue just makes it better overall IMO. Plus you already have your hard drive and controllers, and we all know what a bitch it is to lose saved games and buy new accessories.

The only game I have for PS3 is MLB ’09… that game is OFF THE HOOK.

Have both systems, both are good, but 360 has way to many effin problems with the hardware. Online gaming is better on the 360, but I’ve sent the stupid thing in to get fixed 4 times. The PS3 will initially cost you more, but it has the blue ray, it has the wireless internet connection without the 70$ adaptor, and it has an 80gb hardrive. Bottom line, microsoft is a software company and sony is a hardware company and it shows with these systems.

What it boils down to is games and price. I’m a PSWii owner because I get more for my money, even though wii online sucks it’s still free, on the most reliable systems.
PS3… Hands down, besides the fact that the hardware and peripherals are more reliable the PS3 network is really nice. Lots of demos and keeps you in the loop. I have never owned a X Box 360 so I can only comment on the Sony products but having been a proud owner of my PS3 since November 2006 (original 60 gig). Absolutely no complaints with the exception of the noise at times. They have solved this on the newer releases.
@Doerayme . . Most of the games downloaded are stealth patched and you may get away with playing online, but to prevent from being banned, if you have the original game I would play with the original online.
