Words By Prop Jay
Yesterday Heaven received another soul who departed from us way too soon. Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, the former USBA Super Featherweight Champion of the World, died from “trauma” to the head while in Brazil honeymooning with his second wife.
Reports are that the two fought earlier on in the night; Gatti at some point pushed his wife, Amanda Rodriguez, to the ground and then the two stormed off. Hours later, Gatti was found dead in their hotel room and the wife was taken away by the cops. Nothing formal has been said in regards to charges or suspects but it seems like Sherlock and Watson will be staying in London for the time being and the cops seem to already have their man (or, in this case, woman).
Gatti, was a champion in every sense of the word. What he lacked in talent he over compensated with heart, many times over. His ability to take as much punishment as he dished out was second to none and because of it, along with his passion for the sport, every performance by the man could be characterized as what legends are made of. He often could not live up to the challenges he faced in the ring, but with the character of a champion he epitomized what it takes to be a prizefighter and gave fans their money’s worth time after time.
In a sport filled with talents like the outspoken Mayweather, Gatti was always a breath of fresh air. Retiring in 2007 after a loss to “The Contender’s” Alfonzo Gomez, Gatti was currently involved in Real Estate in Montreal and contemplating a comeback. Unfortunately it wasn’t made to be, but what we can remember are the many epic efforts that this man put forth such as the larger-than-life battles against Mickey Ward.
Here is the Trilogy. Three of the greatest fights of all time, 2 of which were named “Fight of the Year.”
Arturo Gatti Vs. Mickey Ward 1
Arturo Gatti Vs. Mickey Ward 2
Arturo Gatti Vs. Mickey Ward 3
Arturo Gatti, Rest in Peace

The wrath of a scorned woman strikes again. Damn.
Fellas, pay attention!
Damn…what the hell is going on. RIP to Gatti and thank you for giving us a couple of examples reminding us what boxing CAN be at its best.
Damn, I remember that first clip. That was one of the most amazing rounds in boxing I’ve ever seen. You said it best, what he lacked in talent he basically doubled in heart.
Ed, Farrah, MJ, Billy Mays, Steve McNair and now Gatti…all within a month of each other.
I grew up watching boxing, not MMA, but boxing.
I remember watching the gatti/ward fights not really knowing much about him. Afterwards I was taken back. Taken back in the same sense I was when Roy Jones Jr. was dominating people and simply embarrasing them. Obviously not for the same reasons, but because this was a special fighter who brought something different.
This was a loss for the boxing community. Hopefully it will bring a spot light to what boxing can be when it is at its best and not corrupted nor unorganized.
Maybe even inspire some young heads to forget about judo lessons and remember the squared-circle not the octagon.
After The Sopranos and The Wire, Boxing After Dark is the only real reason I still have HBO, and I love BAD because of Gatti’s early fights on there. RIP.

^co-sign, there’s been a lot of ignorance hoovering around here lately.
God Bless you and keep you Gatti!
Wow this is crazy. I’m gonna run those fights back in remembrance. Dude came up in Jersey boxing wise so it hurts to see him go like that. RIP Gatti.
yeah, dude came out of left field w/that nonsense. I hope he left some breadcrumbs so he can find his way back.
RIP….wtf is going on these day? is this “kill your spouse month”
There was always talk about a movie based around the Gatti vs Ward trilogy.
Mark Wahlberg was linked to play Gatti and I think Matt Damon was meant to Ward, although I think Ed Norton would be a better choice.
