Another One Bites The Dust…
DIGITAL NEWS By MZ on June 30, 2009 at 8:00 pm
With this tweet above, Twitter was set ablaze this afternoon with the news of Vibe’s shutdown. Of course YN was on top of things to relay the news and people responded with a mix of shock, condolences & reminiscing. Pretty soon it was being picked up and confirmed by other outlets.
Vibe magazine, the urban-music magazine founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, is the latest victim of the media recession. Multiple sources both within and outside the magazine confirmed that it is shutting down.
Reached for comment, chief financial officer Angela Zucconi said, “We will be making a statement by the end of the day. That’s all I can say at this point.” She referred further questions to CEO Steve Aaron, who was not immediately available.
While it is a shame that it closed it’s doors, I felt nothing but indifference. Not because I wasn’t a fan of the magazine, because as a magazine junkie, Vibe definitely served it’s purpose. It had it’s own niche and filled that gray area that resided between Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop Culture. My indifference stemmed mainly because it’s been a slow, long death for the magazine. The past six months have almost been like business hospice for Vibe and their time finally came. Rumors first popped up in February, yet the magazine kept plugging along although it got noticeably thinner and thinner each month, as ad revenue continued to dwindle. They restructured their business model, but it wasn’t enough. Ironically their Top 50 blog list brought a buzz and sense of relevancy which was all for naught.
R.I.P. to Vibe and hopefully everybody employed there will be able to land on their feet somewhere sooner rather than later.

Don’t be mad, TSS is hiring.
Does anyone have a copy or ever read the review of Nas’ actual “Death of Escobar” album they had? Somehow they were the only mag to review it (4 records). This was around Jan-March 2001. It matched all the news I had read about the album up until then. Been looking for a copy of the review for years (should have bough it!). Would love to hear or know if the reviewer got a hold or still has the actual album.
RIP Vibe. I haven’t read it in years but I used to keep my nose in a Vibe mag back in middle school right along with XXL and EGM. That’s all I needed before the internet.
It’s unfortunate whenever people lose their jobs.
damn Ive had a subscription for the longest. I love Vibe. I thought they were going to have like 6 issues a year atleast. That shits crazy and unfortunate. XXL it is I suppose.
I got addicted to the magazine all up until after 9/11 Along the line it looked like they were getting to metrosexual for my liking and their writers were just out of touch with hiphop…..1 UP for Joe Buddens
Can’t say I didn’t see this one coming. Sad too. Although I haven’t been a regular reader of Vibe Magazine since the late 90’s, whenever my girl brought home a random issue with some R&B chick on the cover, I always snatched it up for some bathroom reading. Even though some may say the quality has declined in recent years, it was one of the few magazines dedicated to the culture that didn’t read like it was written by a bunch of hacks.
damn.
Random Amp sighting
LMAO @ TC
Who you tellin’ lol.
Hmm. I was thinking it may be more fitting if they folded on the 12th.
Prodigy’s gonna have something to say about this one… the evil caucasoid illuminati time travelling racial supremecist slave master cave dwelling child satanic sacrificers have stuck again.
Also that the egyptians were african.
Somehow.
Probably.
lol @ Oh Dear
I hate to see Vibe go. It was Vibe Magazine (I think) with R. Kelly on the cover that I first read about TSS. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.
So like, are all the issues of Vibe I had usless?
