Uncharted 2: Honor Among Thieves (Co-op Preview) x Giveaway!

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was one of the games that almost swayed me to cop a PS3 back in ’07. I knew I had to at least try the preview at E3 since the release of the sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, is around the corner. Naughty Dog, the developers behind the series, are really pushing all the new features in their latest effort. Single player returns with new co-op and multiplayer modes possibly making it one of the most complete games coming out this fall.

The hype behind the flagship title created a long ass line for the new multiplayer mode. I wasn’t about to wait for that shit to settle and figured I’d sit out that & the single player mode. I instead made my move to the cooperative mode line.  Within minutes I was on the controls and it played well considering it was just a preview build.

The mode supports up to 3 players, which made me scratch my head. Why 3? Most other cooperative games support 2, 4 or more. I asked the rep and he said “That’s just how they wanted to make it.” It didn’t seem like the best explanation at first, but it could have been as easy as that. Anyway he told me this mode has its own story behind it, so essentially the co-op and single player story arcs will add a little more longevity the game.

The controls worked well and wont have a steep learning curve if you’re used to playing shooters on PS3. The level we played featured a lot of gun play. There were some simple group objectives too like boost someone towards a ladder to open a passageway or help lift objects to…uncover a passageway. Hopefully the retail version has more complex goals that will mix things up more often.

The enemies got tougher as the level progressed and they surrounded us at some points. This made sure we didn’t stay behind the same cover and kept the game interesting. You can revive your teammates when they’re downed à la Gears of War. The demo let us heal each other an unlimited amount of times as long as our teammates didn’t bleed out. That didn’t mean it was easy to revive people since foes would aim towards you as you ran to help your friend. Some would even pop the corner and cut you off as you attempted to provide aide.

The game looks even better than the first outing and the animation is top notch. I didn’t get to try the new cover move (kick up an object for waist-high cover) but the movements were like something out of an action movie. The level took place in an urban, tropical setting with the high noon sun casting hard shadows all over the map. This early version proved that graphics will be the least of this game’s worries once it ships.

From what I played, the game does nothing revolutionary. Still it follows the rule that sequels don’t have to reinvent themselves to be fun. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves drops this fall exclusively on PS3.

Additionally I received TWO codes for the multiplayer beta. Two lucky readers can use them to preview one of the most anticipated games of the holiday season. To enter the contest just drop a comment with a working email (so we can contact you if you win) and you’re good to go.*

* — Leave all the comments you want; only one will count as your entry. We’ll close the contest on Sunday evening & send out emails afterwards.
