Juice.
MUSIC By Gotty™ on June 8, 2009 at 11:04 amHundreds of miles removed, Summer Jam wasn’t of much consequence for me. But with no major fireworks or expected controversies slated like previous years, it was hard to even feign attention. If you want them, you’ll be bombarded with them across the net (or you could just make your way to Cipha Sounds Youtube page).
Let’s just hit the highlight, which would be T-Pain making his way on stage as Jay-Z performs “D.O.A.”
1. Jay’s song was not revolutionary. It’s what the listening public has been clamoring for.
2. As the one who originally rode the current wave of Auto Tuning to fame, Pain gets a pass, even appearing on stage (minus his “Big Ass Chain” which would’ve been a highlight for me). “You rappers singing too much/ Get back to rap, you T-Pain-ing too much/ I’m a multi-millionaire/ So how am I the hardest nigga here?”
What “D.O.A.” did on Friday was end yet another small era in rap. And it left me thinking: Does Jay officially usher in/exit out every trend in rap?
Jerseys — E’rybody had a throwback. E’rybody had a throwback. Hell, even chicks & designers took Jay’s cue & there were jersey dresses. By the time the average cat saved up enough to have a couple of jerseys for the rotation, Jay hollered out “Switch!” Then next thing you know it was…
“Getting your grown man on” — “get a suit…get it tapered up…” and “give me a crisp pair of jeans nigga….button ups.” Button-ups (or button-downs, if you want to be sartorially correct). Those expensive (and quite overrated) Evisu jeans. That aggin was getting old and he knew it. What better way to NOT stick out as “the old man” then to have everyone change their style to match yours?
Hustler To Rap Mogul-ing Aspiration — Working for the label & being contracted labor seemed so in the past once Jay, Dame & Biggs pushed Rocafella to prominence. Yet, owning a label & perhaps a clothing line was not enough. Switch!
Owning Sports Teams — Jay upped the ante by grabbing a minority stake in the Nets. Next thing you hear, Nelly got himself a minority stock. Usher got himself a minority stock. Damnit MICHELLE from Destiny’s child got herself a minority stock in a WNBA team.
Liquors — You see bottles of Ace Of Spades in these event pics like aggins really doing it up when they’re all just being conned.
Only thing I want him to do right now is just comb his hair before aggins think peasy is okay. It’s like everything else – it ain’t for everybody. The majority of us can do much better picking a style off the barbershop chart.
Plus we all know it costs these stars money to pull off that “hobo-chic” look. Knowing Jay, he prolly got the Talley nigga baby oiling his scalp & teasing his hair each morn so it looks perfectly imperfect. But there goes a style he can’t take actual credit for. Now, he’s just looking like the rest of these wannabe rockstar motherfuckers.
But Jay still does have the juice and that much is undeniable. We were all tired of the Auto Tune and knew it was played. Now there’s a voice bigger than ours to speak out for us because a billion voices still aren’t louder than Jay’s.
At this point, I’m beginning to think that he could even make “fetch” happen.

Jay’s used autotune – Check
“Jay knows what he’s doing though. Autotune was gonna die soon anyway, but now he can take credit for it and make himself look like he’s a trendsetter with all this influence.
He’s done that shit before the opposite way – shouted out whatever was starting to come in style on a record and then made it seem like it was all him responsible for a trend that was happening anyway.
This does seem kinda disingenuous to shout out Ye and Weezy, the two biggest rap artists who utilize that shit. I did laugh at the “mixtape Weezy” shout, though.”
Yeah Gotty, Jay has always been a trendsetter and I used to be one of the lames that would try to mimick everything he did. Remember the wool cap with the bill he wore in the “Change Clothes” video?? I went out and copped two. LOL. Shortly after that I grew up and realized how much of a loser I was to let another man dictate my style. I’m curious to see what Wayne, Drake and ‘Ye do next regarding this autotune.
2 more things:
1) Urban dictionary has THE FUNNIEST entries! LOL. My personal favoriite is their definition of 211 malt liquor…classic.
2) I can’t believe you hit them with the Mean Girls reference. Low key one of my favorite movies. I can’t co-sign on that Bring It On post from last week though.
Yeah, Jay-z does hold some majestic influence over trends and styles in hiphop; it’s pretty fucking annoying and shows just how easily minds can be manipulated and coerced into doing things.
“Last it was throw-backs/this year it’s button-ups/next year, it’ll be button-up-throw-backs” – Grafh
Thank you for taking a different, more interesting, route with this one.
The other blogs are claiming it was ‘historic.’ Far from, IMO. Pain just stood there. Who fucking cares. If anything, Jay allowing the double-standard takes away from the message/power of the song.
Plus, people didn’t even seem that into it. You can always tell it’s hype when cameras are rustling, people are going bananas and you can hardly make out what the artist is saying.
I could hear Jay crystal.
Dope song, though.
The song is dope; but it wasn’t a historic event; hell even with Jay-Z’s appearance this year’s Summer Jam was lackluster at best. What was even funnier is hearing Flex and Mister Cee go off on the cats who they deem unworthy to use auto-tune for a good half hour strong(it may have been longer but I tuned in half way through the anti auto-tune rant.) then within 5 minutes of playing DOA. They played Every Girl, a Drake joint featuring auto-tune, that DJ Webstar/Jim Jones joint, and a Ron Brownz joint. A bunch of loud mouth hypocrites.
Can’t forget the most annoying trend of all: retirements
Jay Z headlined in front of 80,000 (plus crowd) at Glastonbury Rock Festival last year, when the purist rock n roll types including Noel Gallagher of Oasis were questioning should Jay Z headlining and does this go against the grain of the spirit of the rock festival?
Well guess what? He proved all the doubters wrong and cold rocked the spot, yet another precedent he set, not only for the thousands in attendance but for the millions who were watching worldwide via BBC.
He set the precedent that day, but I doubt if anybody like Lil Wayne or any other trying to be chic rock type artist will reach the crowd heights that Jay did at Glastonbury.
@Bigga, yeah I agree, one face, then the other, does Funkmaster Flex still do that fake laugh thing, like he did on that Big Pun skit from Capital Punishment? If Flex’s laugh during that skit was a stone, it would be a cubic zirconium!
@ David D: Retirements??? Co-sign!!! That shit irritated me; “Oh, I’m so important that I’m leaving the game now” fuckouttahere!!! Ain’t no retiring in hiphop, the fans will give you dismissal when it’s time to go.
he set the trend of dickriding when he switched his shit from the rapid fire das efx style to the notorious big flow as soon as he heard biggie spit.
so yeah.. he does..
nothing to brag about though.
I hate to say this, but I dont think Auto-Tune is dead. I think they were still rocking Blame It in the bars on Saturday.
cues up sarcasm
This is bigger than Obama’s election, sliced bread, and kush
end sarcasm
How about sliced rap bread? Basically, each slice is emblazoned with a rappers face, then you just slap on a wad of peanut butter and jelly on it, or whatever topping you like and you eat it.
We could call it rap bread!
Or sliced bread with the logo TSS Is Major emblazoned on each slice, I think this might be more effective than rap bread.
@ Paw: You’re one crazy ninja!!! LOL.
smh @ his never ending rhyme biting..
jays T-R-A-S-H
VERY WEALTHY trash… but trash none the less.
I wear shades indoors and havent had a cut in two weeks.my boss just confronted me. keep it real goes wrong.
Roger Riley & Teddy Troutman – Death of Autotune>>>>> Jay-Z – Death of Autotune
and Patrick M. is right autotune aint dead but I hope all the hate and hype around it is.
i pretty sure he heard biggie rap way b4 any of us did. So who told biggie stop rappin high pitch nonsense. Dont think jays drug raps didnt influence biggie.
wearin that platinum shit when all yall chicks thought it was silver & shit
drinkin crystal when all yall niggas thought it was beer & shit
All jesting and japing aside, I can dig auto tune in the right portions, I think certain artists over do it and they over saturated the scene with this gimmick. However, when it’s done right and proper it is very effective for example The Dream and Tricky Stewart use it well, me thinks.
Also, they need to bring back talkbox, honestly it truly is a great piece of music making equipment, just go ask Teddy and Roger.
This clip encapsulates the true magic of Talkbox, and I don’t think autotune is dead either, it will stick around just for a little while longer…

“Soon we’ll find out who is the real revolutionary … and I don’t want my people to be tricked by mercenaries.” … Hon. Robert Nesta Marley
Something about Jay has always rang false for me. But to each his own. No denying his success though.
Remember when he started that trend of dating the
thickestsexiest bitch on the block for a long time and then you marry her and stop dressing cool and stop cutting your hair and all you wanna do is goto shows and watch basketball; hear the music people making now get grumpy cause you can’t believe people actually like it then you tell everyone that will listen. Remember that trendEh? But what is wrong with Jay Z questioning the conformities laid twain by the current trends of culture?
Let’s get on the mic and battle, and make some tunes, isn’t this what he and to a certain degree Joe Budden are saying.
Basically, put the gimmicks aside, bring your crate of samples a microphone and let’s do it.
It’s like when KRS One pushed PM Dawn off the stage, isn’t this approach similar ie pushing off Autotune?
So this is how you generate buzz so you don’t look like an idiot after paying Def jam 5 mil for your last album?
Jay aint even sy anything on that damn song…he just mad he cant make money off of autotune like everyone else
Jay didnt end shit, cause everyone is still gonna use Autotune
Autotune will never die b/c it is a great piece of musical equipment, esp if used in proper moderation like it should be. You can’t “sing” a whole song in autotune w/o being able to sing first.
But you won’t see it as often. Thank god. I mean Gorilla Zoe used it for crying out loud.
See… normally, I’d say “GEMINI’S UNITE!!! @ Gotty”…
this time… I agree with everything (advocate actually, check myspace) Gotty said but one thing…
Lost was a cool little ditty right there.
Haven’t you been just riding around feeling like there was no answer to some problem?
Anyways… I reinstate the solution as this…
DONT DISS THE TRENDS… DISS THE “aggins” EFFIN UP THE TRENDS!
Jay-Z… DISS YUNG BERG, RON BROWS… etc…
Like seriously…
Then again… he doesn’t diss the little people…
Which makes this whole “Jay-Z marketing scheme” come full circle.
I mean really… how you gonna come out with a song that disses Kanye’s whole album?
I’m still having a really difficult time rocking with this. The production is unreal, No I.D. did his thing for sure. I feel that Jay came (ayo!) lazy and relatively uninspired, especially considering the subject matter and bearing it will have on rap music / hip-hop for the current day. I guess he could just be shutting shit down so hip-hop can progress as a whole and get out of the auto tune quicksand, but I have a hard time believing in the legitimacy of those motives. This whole situation is just really confusing to me. I can’t watch the T-Pain and Jay vid because I’m at work, but this kind of seems very suspect to me.
DONT DISS THE TRENDS… DISS THE “aggins” EFFIN UP THE TRENDS!
Jay-Z… DISS YUNG BERG, RON BROWS… etc…
=====================
Jay aint ever had the guts to name names(okay a few times ) unless the person he dissin already called him out by name.
He did his thing on the beat. there are rappers out thier who would not even pick that beat. we dont know jay’s input on the production. the beat is good battle rap record and it’s also a good live show song. so therefore it’s serve’s it purpose. don’t over think just enjoy.something are not deeper than rap.
The track is alright … It’s no “Fire Burning” though
“Somebody call 9-1-1!”
Ahh I’ve figured it out! Jay is ultimately ending Ron Browz the Etherboy’s career for creating, well, ETHER. Jiggaman and his super secret agendas. He’ll finally forever have the one up on Nasir.
god,
I dont pray often but for this i have no one else to turn to…
please tell jay z to cut his hair. Ill stop smoking and drinking and even lay off on the bootlegging and lusting for hoes if you can just find away to get jay z tapered up
amen
Picking the “obvious thing” consistently is not easy to do. If it were, all of us would’ve created velcro, the sham-o, the pet rock, or some shit.
He’s a businessman, and very strategic in his approach. Cats mimic Jay-Z because he’s the personification of what most of these rappers aspire to be. Dude’s strategic, calculating, and always seems to be playing chess on the hip-hop checkerboard.
Another faux Jay-Z “trend”: The R&B girlfriend/wife.
When Nasir did similar shit, cats were quick to yell “GIMMICK”, but when Camel does it, it’s a “TREND.” Hip-Hop fans are on some lame follower shit…
