With soul bearing revelations like “Mockingbird” and “Like Toy Soldiers,” 2004′s Encore marked a personal triumph for the psyche of Marshall Mathers, yet the bulk of the album’s frivolous material resulted in the common recognition as being Eminem’s most forgettable work to date. To make matters worse, his health spiraled downward after the tragic shooting of D12 member and best friend DeShaun “Proof” Holton and chronically abusing pain medications. After a nearly-five year hiatus which seemed like an eternity to most fans, Slim Shady steps back on his high horse to break the circle of uncertainly with the thoroughly entertaining Relapse.
Not your typical Relapse however, with the title being a subliminal reckoning for the subconscious of Slim Shady to run amuck — who all but dominates the course of the project. From busting out of rehabilitation centers to masturbating to Hannah Montana movies on the diabolically descriptive “3 A.M.,” to giving into his withdrawals with astounding wordplay on “Must Be The Ganja,” Slim electrifies his audience with all the perversion, wittiness and downright crude humor you’ve come to expect from him over the years. A perfect example of lovely lunacy would be the radical chronicle of “Same Song & Dance,” where Eminem the serial killer proceeds to kidnap and murder Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and the coinciding skit’s Tonya over Dr. Dre and Dawaun Parker’s eerie composition with bass that thumps like a pulsating heartbeat to match. Ridiculous? Of course. But only a disturbed genius such as Eminem could pull it off to pose as a club song.
Moreover, Dr. Dre can claim Relapse as his own reentry to exemplary Hip-Hop as well. Laboring on all but one of the audio opiates present, his expertise in the studio radiates with a bevy of dark and murderous recordings that feed the monster of Eminem’s bloodthirsty tales. “Stay Wide Awake” employs a haunting piano loop which evokes visions of the forest chase scene from a slasher flick as Em plays yo-yo with lyrics of terrorizing innocent victims. The sounds of breaking glass (and records) on “Crack A Bottle” offers a momentary diversion to the macabre music as does the much-lampooned “We Made You” — which finds its footing in the context of the LP opposed to a stand alone single.
As with any psychiatric disorder however, the road to recovery doesn’t happen overnight. And in Eminem’s case, his bouts with regressing well-worn topics prevent him from showcasing complete remediation. The grotesquely homoerotic “Insane” and the Mariah Carey jarring on “Bagpipes From Baghdad” gain no new ground. Rare epiphanies like the atmospheric “Beautiful” and the remarkably inclusive account of the actual relapse heard on “Déjà Vu,” rank amongst the album’s shining moments. When radio interviews reveal more of the story than the actual music, there’s indication that the Slim Shady caricature may be more of a safe haven for Eminem than given credit for.
Nonetheless, the unyielding cinematic theme and its coordinating score earn high marks all across the board. Eminem returns to the center stage; creating his own limelight without piggybacking on any of Hip-Hop’s current trends. He may have conquered most of his demons but it’s an achievement in itself for one of the game’s greats to thrive in a total state of remission.

Seems like 1/2 a cig too many to me.
Yes indeedy, on point, on point!
Naa, 4 cigs is right!
pretty damn accurate.
this is on point! my mom is the ILLEST track! dre’s a fool for that one!
you lot need to fuck off with your fucking 3 and a half cigs on everything…have some bollocks and tell it like it is. the worst part about this site is the reviews. the best part of this site is everything else. Im a big fan of everything else that goes down and gets put up but STOP reviewing shit. STOP.
nice review as always…eminem haters aren’t gonna be happy
@ london joe – 3.5 cigs on everything??? uhhhh, check the rating on this one, boss, it’s 4 cigs
haha
Its always 3.5 on everthing and due to that i had some shit going on in my brain that made me see a 3.5 and get maaaad. my bad though. good review whoever did it. backtracking like Budden in this bitch..
I’ll admit, wasn’t feeling this one at first, my first 2-3 listens I would have deemed it 2.5 cigs, I still think 4 is high, 3.5 sounds about right, but it is a decent enough album.
@ london joe …
no one forces you to read/agree with the reviews.
perhaps you’d prefer the ratings system of … ?
Great Job!!! Yes the 4 is well deserved he put in work most definitely.
The Rating Systems of David Mays and Ray Benzino!
But really though, 4 cigs is right, because like I said the other day, Eminem is channeling it like the William S Burroughs of Hip Hop and that’s word to Ginsberg. It’s quite an angry sounding album with a variety of themes, dreams and schemes explored.
review was on point…deja vu and beautiful are really what i wish the album was made of with just some slim shady on the side…but there is still hope for relapse 2 i guess….that joint is so homoerotic i cant even listen to that shit, reminds of that ken kaniff/icp dick licking skit off marshal mathers, you are vibing one minute and the rushing to the cd player to hit skip when that shit starts
@levar F.M.
i know but in my opinion (and thats all it is) it seems like most are 3.5 on the reviews and it make me just swerve it all together because the write up will be good and then it all ends up the same rating….
shits dope 4 cigs is right on point…looks like underground is a prelude to whats on the next one…

I think this woulda hit me harder if I didn’t listen to any of the links. Those bonus tracks shoulda came with the CD. Buying a CD these days shows dedication.
*leaks
@Terrail, you’ll be able to cop it for around 5 quid in approximately 2 months time, CD’s get reduced quickfast nowadays, so bide your time, and get it on the cheap if you still want to.
Personally, I allocate a fair proportion of my ‘fun stash’ to purchase DVDs and soon I’ll be starting a collection of Blu-Ray releases of premium grade movies only, to watch in HD format. on a huge Sony Trinitron (erm when I can finally afford one).
But you are right buying a CD these days shows dedication, but it pisses me off when they re-release a CD with bonus tracks, that’s like the label wants you to double dip. They should give those goodies first time around to the buyer, the greedy bastards.
Regardless of what this is rated…. This album just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Solid review.
But…
“Rare epiphanies like the atmospheric “Beautiful” and the remarkably inclusive account of the actual relapse heard on “Déjà Vu,” rank amongst the album’s shining moments.”
Two of the weakest moments on the album IMO.
“Deja Vu” has grown on me (That “Notable Quotable” had something to do with that) but “Beautiful” remains a chore to listen to.
Still, I’m honestly looking forward to Relapse 2.
Shady’s back. Tell a friend.
And for the record…4 Cigs is just right. If this was an instrumental CD it would be a 3 at the least and regardless of whether you’re into what Em is talking about, you can’t deny that dude’s mastery of flow is almost without peer.
4 Cigs is right on target.
@baby paw
I bought the CD yesterday. I’m saying the people who actually go to stores to purchase music as opposed to getting it off iTunes should get a little something extra.
Co-sign to Doug Howser, absolute co-sign.
^ C’mon Flea, you can’t front on the production or Em’s wordplay.
@Terrail, agreed, bonus itune tracks should be on the physical CD copy as well. But it would appear that the labels are leaning more towards digital downloads.
I’m sure you’ll agree when you go to the store nowadays, the CD racks are gradually getting smaller, eventually we won’t be able to buy physical formats at all.
I tell you where you don’t get short changed though, over in Japan, their flippin CD releases get bonus tracks and remixes galore. Not fair!
4 cigs is a little high; but that is just 1 mans opinion. Lisa Salter’s Hind Parts is 4+ cigs. lol!!!
@ Amp: I am extra-biased in regard to Eminem; I’ve never been a fan of his work. I know that the “real heads” are going to lambast me for not acknowledging his latest *ahem* masterpiece, but I ain’t feeling his music.
“Yeah Babay”… I can’t stand Eminem, never have.
However, this album is ingenious because I don’t see any other MC covering this material they just don’t think this way- depression/ abuse/ molestation/incest/rape. Our culture just doesn’t verbalize those things and with recent artist they would rather “retire” instead of picking up the mic. I believe it takes a crazy person to put these stories to music, his mind is still distorted but I can still feel his hunger. The 4 cigs indisputable… Great Job!!!
@ Stinson: Ha!!! Damn straight my ninja: Lisa Salter’s ass >>> Relapse
I think that 4 cigs is right on the money.
And I did go out and get a physical copy of the album.
Em’s flow> about 83% of hip-hop.
Truf.com
nice work fellas..on point.
I think 4 is accurate. Talent and skill wise Em is pretty much better than everybody making music right now. The skill shown on this jawn confirmed that. The Album’s subject matter not really my thing, so the entire album won’t be in heavy rotation but a few tracks will
Dopest Tracks: “My Mom”, “Must Be The Ganja”, “Medicine Ball”, “Deja Vu” and “Beautiful” (also both of the bonus tracks are nice)
After listening to the whole CD straight one thing is for sure…… homeboy’s wordplay and lyricism and flow outright rediculous!!
I agree. 4 cigs is perfect.
Great review, even if the grotesque nature of “Insane” has less to do with the homoerotic bent and more with the incest.
Is there an instrumental version?
Standard Em CD, forgettable if youre not a hardcore “Stan”.
At this point wouldnt we all rather hear Royce or GFK or Sean Price or even Buddens with Aftermaths production and marketing?
^^^
GFK- hell yeah
Royce- no
Buddens- hell no
Slim electrifies his audience with his flow*….
===========================================
is what you shoulda said….ASIDE FROM THAT… THIS ALBUM WAS A FUCKIN’ FRIDAY THE 13TH PT.30 ON ACID….I used to love eminems music to death but lately its been the SAME FUCKING THING….content content, and more content is king….DIDNT WE ALREADY HEAR HOW HE IS GONNA RAPE ALL THE BACKSTREET BOYS AND KILL N SYNC NOW HE’S GOING AFTER WASHED UP POP STARS AGAIN….DIDN’T WE ALREADY HEAR HOW HIS MOM WAS A PILL POPPING ADDICT…AT LEAST IF UR GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT SHIT MAKE IT WORTH MY WHILE..
EMINEM PROLLY DOESNT EVEN TAKE HIMSELF SERIOUSLY THESE DAYS…
C’MON…AND THAT FUCKING VOICE IS WHAT KILLS THE ALBUM…THE ONLY SONGS WORTH HEARING ARE “Beautiful”, “Med. Ball”, and “Underground” everything else is just oscar the grouch..garbage…
Just my opinion…I think I was looking for more just like I was looking for more in Jadakiss’ album… The top dogs aren’t doing it like they used to…
Anotha Time,
MaLLY
P.S. Eminem still has a flow that is out of this world but his ass stil don’t get a pass from me….my rating: 2 wet soggy ass cigarettes in the pack…
stans rejoice…..one question however…blackout2 was better than this and i would hesitate to even give that 4 cigs. this site never gives a bad review just tell it like it is em had his day but this is not a quality album despite the crazy sales..as far as cigs go this is one that got broken in half and had to be mickey moused together with some of dre’s most boring beats. cop the blackout2
Eminem: Rapper Ternt Character Actor: [tinyurl.com]
this review gave 3 cigs too many. This ablum is garbage. Stans yap about his flow, but if all you rap about is shit, your flow is just shitty. Eminem is a great rapper (making words rhyme) but his lyrcism is trash because his subject matter is trash. I don’t care how lyrical you are because if you are rapping about shit….your lyrics are shit.
You little emo, surburban, children will realize the fact that eminem is garbage when you finally grow up; if you ever grow up.
Great review. Nice work.
I only listened to the singles and leaks at first and kind of cast the album aside. I finally copped and listened all the way through this morning and came to a lot of realizations about the album. It’s dope as hell, and as much as I hate “the voice” I can respect it as somewhere Em goes when he is uncomfortable and rapping sober. He was probably rapping totally sober for the first time in his entire life, which is never too easy. As a recovering alcoholic I’m all too familiar with all the behavior he speaks of (bar the raping, killing, etc…) regarding drugs and I really see how much emotion he poured into the album. Some songs aren’t really even listenable, such as “insane” but otherwise most are dope as hell.
The album is dope, but all that gay shit is too much.
Production on the album was dope…. but some of the songs just seemed… not good.
I like “Medicine Ball”… “DejaVu” and like one other…. the name slips my mind at the moment. This album is Eminem’s Kingdom Come, it’s not a bad album its just not good. :/
Im not publicly jumping on either side of the “Stan” fence… all im saying is whether you give Em 2 soggy cigs or a carton ur fuckin crazy for not mentioning Stay Wide Awake… The flow on the second verse made me leap all over furniture (my girls pretty pissed)… the flow on the third verse made me jump off and drop kick her… there are other obviously good and bad things to point out but everyone forgetting about that song is ridiculous..
AND THAT FUCKING VOICE IS WHAT KILLS THE ALBUM
——————————————————————-
This is where I am with it
Deja Vu
3am
Same Song and Dance
Beautiful
Stay Wide Awake
The 5 songs above are the only tracks worth listening to on the album. But they’re not just worth listening to, they are brilliant tracks. That’s what makes the album so divisive. By all accounts the selection of tracks is mixed. But If the media loved and blew Jay-z’s 5 track hit ‘Blueprint’ out of proportion, then there is no reason why this shouldn’t be seen similarly, considering that Eminem breaks new ground and traverses unfamiliar territory for rap. But since I am not the d*** riding media, I will put things in perspective; I’ll say that Eminem has definitely returned and he is back, more focused and purposeful then ever. This album is a STRONG 3 out of 5 stars. Or a 3.5 starts out of 5 for those who think he did better. But the 5 abovementioned tracks are very encouraging. The only thing that had me in knots was what’s up with the new voice? (And no it’s not his accent, he has altered the tone of his voice and not his accent). I’ve rarely seen a man in his late 30s going through voice changes. But then again, we’ve seldom seen an artist like Eminem. Here’s hoping that Relapse 2 packs more hits and builds on his promising return to the game.
Thanks!! Still one more incredible picture, it’s really exactly why I return to the wordpress bog repeatedly…
