2009 is an important year for the Hip-Hop music industry as labels are closely watching the success of XXL’s Freshman class to see what marketing techniques work. While most of the group is relying on an Internet blitz or major label help, New Orleans MC Curren$y decided to quietly drop a digital album through Amalgam. Ultilizing the momentum gained from a serious mixtape grind, the official album: This Ain’t No Mixtape is a stellar debut from Curren$y that marks his arrival as a force in the industry.
Those that know the Hot $pitta as nothing more than a Young Money member are in for a shock as Curren$y takes the listener on a non-stop display of lyrical skill. TANM is a tour through the young MC’s closet (Bo Jackson’s, Air Max’s), garage and weed stash.
Produced entirely by Monsta Beatz who displays an assorted bag of bangers and blunt background music alike, the inaugural tracks such as “The Briefing” and “ Get It Ya Self” boast a comfortable (and extremely lax) Curren$y treading in general fodder, which in turn, set the table for the fantastic “Scared of Monstas” and “Elevator Musik.” The former (especially the 2nd verse) gives the listener a glimpse of Curren$y’s mindstate as a Hurricane Katrina survivor while the latter rides as smooth as the three minute lift to the penthouse suite.
And therein lies the appeal to TANM — mellowed out, get high music. Soft horns and Curren$y’s relaxed flow permeate the album on joints like the Mickey Factz, Amanda Diva featured “Food 4 Thought” and more high octane stimulants like “The Jet-Sons” and “Cook Up (Free Lunch)” which displays a hungry Curren$y and Bun B trading bars like a high school cafeteria cypher.
But the blunt cruise through the streets of New Orleans aren’t always smooth rides. Despite Curren$y’s lyrical fire, TANM sounds, well, like a mixtape. He rarely delves deeper than the weed, shoes and girls into his life story. Also, the hooks are as basic and mostly unappealing. The basic bridge of “I turn on like the power button on the remote” from “Power Button” isn’t necessarily screaming out for a repeat listen. Neither is the uncreative ranting of “LOL-ing on these niggas” on the boisterous “LOL.”
Still Curren$y’s tales of blunts, stunts and Hip-Hop mark his arrival as a solo beast in the recording industry. Carefree and nonchalant like the rapper himself, it’s a cut and dry outlook on what makes the budding MC tick. No, this ain’t no mixtape, but it’s a damn good album.

“Up Here” is my current fave off the album, but my fave changes from week to week.
Good write-up for a good album, but I still wanna see what Spitta can do with all the resources of a major label at his disposal.
JETS!
^SUPER DUPER COSIGN!!!
oooh…splendid write up. My personal favorite is Cook Up but it varies on the day and setting
Hip Hop is going full circle again, you’re chance of long term success will be based around dope singles and not albums.
Dope singles, with a couple of hot remixes, singles to hit the charts, so folks hear you on radio and see your video on the music channels and wot not.
Nobody is really copping for albums much these days, the rapidshare and megaupload killed that angle anyway. Folks hard drives clogged with loads of albums that they don’t really listen to that much.
Get some hot singles, and some decent backing remixes to increase your scope for longevity and product diversity. You hit decent sales and legal downloads, then the label is happy because they getting paid, you getting rotation, plus paid too.
It’s going back to basics, the labels have re-evaluated their strategies, don’t let them absorb your recording budget by re-couping what they deem to be a loss because you’re album didn’t shift units.
Heck, you don’t even need a major label anymore, I’ve seen the Artic Monkeys and Gnarls Barkley get major smash hits because they had a tight single and they got the product out via appropriate channels.
I’m glad Wale is biding his time, dude appears to have his strategy on lock down and folks in the mainstream market know who he is anyway because of Mark Ronson, so he releases a few decent singles and man it’s on, longevity.
listenin’ to the shit right now
“Blown Away”, “Elevator Music”, “On My Plane”, “Food 4 Thought”, & “Galaxy” stood out to me initially & are current faves.
it’s solid & a worthwhile cop

Guess Mega isn’t a man of steel
Paw’s comments…where going against the grain goes wrong…
@Trill, dude is that all you got to say? Shouldn’t you be fixing the foil around your teeth and drinking some of that booty juice or whatever trillionaires drink.
^lmao…I don’t know what that really means but it made me laugh
funny thing though….I cue this shit, press play…and…for some reason…I don’t feel like doing shit, lol…that weedhead laziness is contagious, lol…nah, but this tape is literally dope, like, some really good weed…like, if I get the munchies, I’m gonna wanna go out for some pancakes and shit, lol
This album is fucking sick! I disagree about “LOL” not being a creative track, the wordplay is nice on that joint. I’ll listen to Curren$y over Weezy anyday.
@ paw its a review of an independently released album and you go on a rant about majors and singles…
oh yea “trillionaires” drink lean and if by foil you men a grill..no I dont have one.
yo…this album is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than i thought it was going to be. i was pleasantly surprised.
that “top of the money” and “scared of monstas” are my joints.
actually copped this one
quite impressed
I like “Power Button” alot
^ I second 500k’s Hot Spitta> Weezy F. vote
surprised no one mentioned “16 switches spitter” I thought that shit was dope…
Album hooks were definitely weak and the album got a little repeptitive but I know that he’s only gonna get better pause…
Album of the year so far
@ Paw: WOO-SAAAH!!!
Paw – Chill with all the off-topic diatribes please. That or write it in your journal.
I like the album. I think the major flaws would be some of the choruses which are damn near laughable. I don’t care what ANYONE says, “I keeps it on like the power button on the remote” does not equal a “good” chorus lol. The beats get mundane after a while too. Too similar.
Like someone mentioned a few weeks ago (I had to stay quiet then lol), this is a good album — independent & as an intro to some fans. But he’s gotta get w/a few different producers & add some polish in order to really do it bigger.
If you live in the Bay, Curren$y has a show Weds night at 330 Ritch in SF. Mistah F.A.B. is gonna roll through too. Shit should be fire!

Its a Dutch House Record Label..
their latest release is ‘Riverside’.. with the famous line “its Riverside M*therf*cker”
but just check their logo at their website..
Yea i cant swell this joint get major spins all the way threw (word to my last.fm) & i buss out laughin whenever Trademark comes in on the chorus to LOL.. classic filler track lol
I know I asked about a review of this one yesterday, and here Dub D comes in full effect. I wanted to give this one 4 cigs, but I came across the same conclusions… nothing really ground-breaking in this album, but its still dope nonetheless.
Definitely worth the $8.99 though, and a better deal than a lot of albums these days. This album gets heavy spins…
but like Teef said:
funny thing though….I cue this shit, press play…and…for some reason…I don’t feel like doing shit, lol…that weedhead laziness is contagious, lol…nah, but this tape is literally dope, like, some really good weed…like, if I get the munchies, I’m gonna wanna go out for some pancakes and shit, lol
I have learned not to listen to this shit before work… I get hungry, and have to stop for breakfast on the way… and don’t wanna teach when I get there. Damn shame.
@ Ragga
Alfamega’s life is done. lol
anybody on here that speaks Russian and can help a bruva out?
i need a translation:

Alfamega = fucked
butstill didnt they learn the first time with the pepper spray? I laughed when I read it had no immediate effect, and neither did the baton
I say we ban Bp on the real!!..
At first i thought he was creating a buzz buy leaving corny ass poems for the cooler chick’s of the day post(s), but now he thinks he has an audience behind him, so he just leaves oblivious comments in every post for no reason. Holmes, Baby Paw, if you dont like a post or if you have a certain issue with anything that gets posted on TSS, please dont pollute/contaminate our comments boards with blasphemy, immature comments, nor incomplete thoughts!! I hate the fact that grown-ass men still go crazy off of a new pair of Jordans, throwback air max, &/or a new new-era fitted hat but you dont see me leaving hating ass comments in the post (do ya research, i guarantee you wont find any from BLAZEdaCANNONz) about how we as adults should have our focus on more in depth news & issues about our nation & survival as black men/women! Cause TSS covers a multitude of worldwide issues.
I am not your enemy, for i am one of the people that had to learn how to keep his thoughts to his self when it came to leaving a comment on a TSS post unless i had something valid to say about the topic/post, I just dont want this perfectly structured site/blog to turn into a bullshit ass forum which people leave anonymous names (no offense to the big homie) just to hide the lack of knowledge they have in the industry.
So if you continue to leave such shitty comments on this site please have some facts behind your conclusion, because i am ready to come out of my bag on your BITCH-ASS!!!
Now the owner of the blog already asked you politely, but if you continue than I, if not the whole entire family, will begin to dig you a new well…PAW, babez (i refuse to call a grown man baby, lil, & young!!!).
i think he ^^ is mad.
Way to live up to your name champ…
But I think its quite the contrary… Dude just loves this site just like the rest of us & ain’t tryna have his interactions spoiled by some random ass black Israelite type nigga screamin out whatever comes to mind…
i loved this album way more than i expected…i hadn’t really dipped into the mixtapes (my fault) but this album was great to me. i’d give it 4/5 personally but i understand the faults you guys see…
and yeah LOL’in is a terrible, terrible hook.
poor Paw…I merely poke fun at him in humor ( he does the same shit..i aint forgot when you called me old. Spice lol) yea he’s a lil nonsensical but occasionally on topic..
.@ trill…i just figured out who you were.
…i’m such a lame. i’m reciprocating the follow on twitter, homie.
I don’t mind off topic. I do mind just being out in left field just to see what confusion you can cause.
Straight up, you can hear every bit of Wayne’s flow was taken from Curren$y. It’s so obvious, it’s sad.
“LOL” is cheeks lol. I think I just get angry @ the choruses of some of these b/c lyrically, he’s consistently on point. Limited but good as hell w/it.
I love Curren$y. He’s one of the best rappers I’ve discovered in the last year and I constantly listened to his monthly mixtapes.
I agree, the hooks are a bit weak. But I somewhat expected that. You can tell from the mixtapes, he puts a lot more work into the verses than he does with the hooks. But the hooks on the album were even improved compared to the mixtape hooks. I thought the hooks on “Jet-Sons” and “Elevator Music” were cool, along with the hook on “Blown Away”.
Curren$y’s great, but he’s got some room for improvement. Like the review said, I kind of wish he’d write a song that isn’t about weed or girls.
But overall, a solid album.
I reckon Curren$y doesn’t know about anything other than weed, cars and girls. Easily 4 stars for me and right up there with “Relapse” and the Termanology/Dilla Tape as my favorites this year.
As for the “LOL” hook, I don’t want to give Spitta too much credit, but I think that may have been the point, cause I chuckle every time I hear it and I can’t get it out of my head
“Jet-Sons” is a fucking banger. Would be cool if he could get that on radio or TV somehow. I think that song has some crossover appeal. I’m also a big fan of “16 Switches Splitter” & “Sail On”.
Yes, Wayne definitely gave this guy the shark-nigga treatment. Bit everything. Shouts to Monsta Beats too. Probably the best $10 I’ve spent this year…
After a listen, I’m feeling this album. If you’ve been listening to his mixtapes then, lyrically you know what to expect. As far as the beats go, Monsta Beatz (terrible name, lol) has variety but like Gotty said needs more polish and fleshing out. Hopefully, this album makes a bit of noise and lands Spitta on a major. I can see him rockin’ with Star Trak or Re-Up Records. Musically he fits Pharrell’s vibe, lyrically he’s akin to the Clipse and he has that whole fashion label thing popping as well.
this album has made me a believer of currensy
@Blazedacannonz, thanks for the offer, but I don’t need a new well. But if you are serious about digging a well, then you could always donate a little bit of your money towards clean water projects in locations such as Africa, India an places where such essentials are needed. I’d hook you up with a few links to organisations that undertake such projects, but you sound like an intelligent individual, so I’m confident you can find your way around.
@Trill, I jest, I jest, you’re good peoples, no malice intended, honestly hand on heart. :)
@Gotty, ok, I’ll ease back, but if I keep a cool head, you think I could maybe eventually get to write up an ad-hoc feature/article for the TSS, pending you and the rest of the TSS crew approve and I’m up for it? My knowledge on movies, hip hop and random trivia tid bits is ocean deep. So maybe I could channel it positively on a platform such as this one?
This album makes me depressed thinking about listening to the old young money mixtapes before wayne starting blowing up again in which Currensy was the showcase because he was by far the most talented artist (Currensy, Mack Maine, and Lil Wayne). At least Currensy is doing his thing rather than complaining and fading to the back (Gillie).
ben real i can translate that email me mpg100@gmail.com
nvm easier than i thought:
ya occheni skuchayu po tebe i lublu.
ti svodish menya s uma kak vsegda.
ya neznayu che delat.
i miss you and love you lots
you drive me crazy and i dont know waht to do
LOL
some russian bitch is on you haha
This was definitely worth my $9. I think for who he is and what his style is, this was a solid 4 cigs.
Fave 5 ©T-mobile Blown Away, 16 Switches, Scared Of Monstas, The Jet Sons and Sail On. The beat on the Intro is fresh too.
Oh and I’m with Blazedacannonz on this one. SHUT UP Paw!
The author that wrote this is a dumbass “The basic bridge of “I turn on like the power button on the remote” from “Power Button” isn’t necessarily screaming out for a repeat listen. Neither is uncreative ranting of “LOL-ing on these niggas” on the boisterous “LOL.””
Listen to Lol’s verses..You cant even comprehend everything they say unless your blazed. Trademark is sick. “can’t see me not even with telescoptic optics” or the next verse he says “Pharaoh apparel polo horses on my chest, blowing on the best, look up at the sky not a boeing its the jets”
and you complain about the hook..Moron. First album I spent my money on since the The Black Album. Even Kanye gets downloaded round here. Curren$y the truth,Lupe the truth, clipse the truth,Lloyd Banks the PLK, Asther Roth(positive Eminem). Spitta needs to get an award for best new artist.
I am a serious fan of this guy, but I wasnt too sure an album by curren$y would be any good
but i was wrong
this shit cranks man..if your contemplating whether or not to buy the album..dont..JUST GET IT! if your a curren$y fan u will not be dissapointed
n for all of those “LOL” song haters in here give me this…yes the hook is a lil basic..but lyrics and the BEAT of the song is flawless man!..especially if your bumpin it in the whip
