Words By Prop Jay
On a slow day, I reverted to digging through some classics. Therefore, I present you with this old Bay Area Latyrx jam. The Solesides crew is simply legendary, and Lateef and Lyrics Born through their group Latyrx generously helped contribute to earning this title.
This jam is exactly how I got turned on to the crew, and it was this track that later led me to hearing DJ Shadow’s classic album Entroducing. It’s off their second release Muzzapers Mix EP from 1998, but strangely enough the song was released a bit earlier (1996) as a single only to be left off thir first release Latyrx: The Album. Therefore, as Lateef and Lyrics Born give praise to what seems to be the perfect woman, the jazz and funk infused beat hooks you early on and seems to only let go enough to make you pay attention to what is being said about this lost vixen.
Musically, both easily wrap their voices around the melody like no other and I mean that literally; no other rapper/artist is able to duplicate their sound. It is this variation, or play-on, of our beloved genre (Hip-Hop) that has been what has always kept me intrigued enough to follow them. Today, not many Hip-Hop artists truly bring something new to the table when they finally get their break. This track is a perfect example of the simple innovation that I often feel we are missing within the genre that once was prevalent and promoted in the past.

There were hella remixes on the maxi-single
Nice Prop Jay.

Once I get off of work I will search the internetz for some of their material.

that crew was part of my up and coming on hip hop too. I was in like grade 9 or something just gettin down to latyrx and abstract rude while all my other grade 9 white homies thought i was half-retarted. …….
They came around, and figured it was full-blown a few years later.
Good post, I was thinking of these dudes about a month ago.
Did Latyrx do a collaboration with Blackaliscious? (sorry if I mispelled)
Does anybody have any of their old material?
Entroducing is an amazing album, also very fond of Blazing Arrow too.
blazing arrow has been on repeat for 7 years. I remember buying that shit the day it came out.
NIA = also golden
@Prop Jay, yep NIA is nice too.
Solesides Greatest Bumps is a nice CD too, got a tune on there called Swan Lake which was mellow madness.

uliama check here in a bit. Just uppin a bit.
Swan lake is a great track.
That solesides greatest bumps also was in rotation for a very long time. This crew somehow got forgotten or just stayed too “underground” and never really got known. The internet would of helped them back in the day.
Ughh was always on top of the jansport scene. I was too.
Much obliged kind sir. Thank you.
@Propjay, ha ha man this crew was Jansport Deluxe, I thought they would get wider recognition since DJ Shadow was hitting the big time. Plus from what I recall Quannum/Solesides were getting some decent airplay on stations like BBC 1 radio.
As for Blazing Arrow, this is my tune of choice, such a nice summer vibe to it. The summer of 2002 if memory serves me correctly.

Hahaha, it will be soon. I have to furnish my trips to Vegas and Japan – so I have to stick it out until mid-june/early july. I’m thinking of renting a tuxedo and wearing it on my last day.
Thanks again for putting me on (pause) to some new musical treasures.
No worries Jay prop, you’re doing me the favor. Anything is a plus.
