Empire Of The Sun was introduced to me as ‘this year’s MGMT.’ In my book, that’s quite the compliment.

Although this two-man band’s production may not be quite on par with that of MGMT, the Brooklyn synth-pop duo who came out of nowhere with their acclaimed mainstream debut album Oracular Spectacular, I can see the similarities.

Empire’s music is equally as shimmering and retro as their more established counterparts, with their uptempo vibe serving as an almost relaxing mediation of moods instead of a pulsating pick-me-up. Both duos share familiar themes of wondering and wandering, leaving listeners picking apart their equivocal lyrics like bark off a tree. Oh, and if you didn’t notice, both groups dress weird as all hell.

That’s all fine and dandy though because no matter who they’re compared to now, with songs like “Walking On A Dream,” the lead single off their debut album of the same name, Empire Of The Sun will surely eclipse any similarities by the end of 2009.

If rap gets ahold of them, which it surely will, I’m praying Jim Jones doesn’t strike first.
