Think of the first time you heard Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat.”

I can’t recall if I was simply young & naïve, not paying attention or what but the slightly perverse nature of the song’s lyrics missed me. Same thing with me & B’s “Ego.” With all of the good, listenable songs on I Am….Sasha Fierce, skipping over the slick sexual references was too easy. In fact, I didn’t even catch it until the remix dropped with ‘Ye (yeah, I justify listening to a R&B song multiply times when a rapper jumps on the chune). The kid was riding shotgun & I’d bombarded her with the remix until she started singin’ along to the chorus…

It’s too big, it’s too wide
It’s too strong, it won’t fit
It’s too much, it’s too tough…”

Whoa whoa there kid!

It was then & there that the implications came to the surface. And it was then that I shared what I think was a similar moment that my own pops had when he put the lightweight ban on Prince’s “Erotic City” being played in our house.
