The cruel thing about soccer is that in an instant, 180 minutes of hard-won domination can be rendered useless. Case in point, yesterday’s Champions League semi-final match between Chelsea and Barcelona.
Over the course of two matches, Chelsea managed to shackle — statistically-speaking — the greatest Barcelona team ever, better than the likes of the early ‘90s “Dream Team” and the ’06 squad featuring Ronaldinho at his superhuman peak. Barcelona was running scared shitless, mistiming every pass in anticipation of hard tackles flying in, especially from one man — marauding midfielder Michael Essien.
It was Essien who gave Chelsea the advantage when the ball took a lucky deflection and fell fortuitously in his path for the most improbable of shots, exacting cruelty on Barcelona just nine minutes in.
“99 times out of 100 Essien would miss that shot,” the announcers said. They must’ve forgot homey has a flair for these kinds of things.
And so, after being out-played from then until literally the dying moment, with one last surge, Barcelona stole the match right from under Chelsea in the 93rd minute — word to Nightfox.
It was a rough couple of days for Londoners. Chelsea had lost it late, and a day before, it was Arsenal who lost it practically before it got under way — a slip from an Arsenal defender eight minutes in gifting rivals Manchester United a goal.
Not that Manchester United needed help. Again, tolerate-or-despise him, Cristiano Ronlado, prodded along by his larger-than-life ego, proved he’s the best player on the planet. While Chelsea made his closest rival, Lionel Messi, largely ineffectual, Ronaldo seized the semi-final stage to score twice, one of which any player with an ounce of humility wouldn’t have dared to even attempt.
But that’s not how Ronaldo operates.
And so, Londoners left both matches with heads hung low — with one Arsenal fan deciding to take it further and hang himself after suffering through a fourth year with no trophies. Soccer can be that cruel, I guess. It’s a good thing the Cubs play baseball, then.

Chelsea were a man up for 30 minutes, and parked the bus… they punished themselves despite the refs fuck ups.
United – Barca… YES
THE MIGHTY MAN UNITED WENT TO ROME TO SEE THE POPE
THE MIGHTY MAN UNITED WENT TO ROME TO SEE THE POPE
THE MIGHTY MAN UNITED WENT TO ROME TO SEE THE POPE
AND THIS IS WHAT HE SAID, FUCK OFF !
WHO THE FUCK ARE MAN UNITED
WHO THE FUCK ARE MAN UNITED
WHO THE FUCK ARE MAN UNITED
AND THE REDS GO MARCHING OOOOOOOOOOON
Damn why you had bring up fresh wound Devin?
That stoppage time goal was heartbreaking.
i like me some soccer… weird game, but i’d rather watch soccer than abunch of nordic-bred clowns on skates punching each other like its normal.
*gasp* is this really TSS?
i never thought i’d see a soccer post on here.
anyway, Barca simply got lucky and Chelsea deserved to win, but i’m not too miffed about it cause i hate the billionaire bastards. i wanted my team to play the best possible opponent (also a team i’ve enjoyed watching) in the final and i’ve got it. plus it provided me with an epic meltdown.
I cant be too mad can I?
As far as a prediction…
3-1 United
Rooney, Ronaldo x2, Iniesta
Barca just struggles entirely too much breaking down English teams to beat us. And their defense is going to be makeshift since they dont have Alves and Abidal to suspension. Barca will control possession due to their meandering style, but we’ll have the better play of it and more clear chances.
As a sidenote, Messi has to show up in the big stage i think if he wants to be the best (Ronaldo still is). Unfortunately for him, I cant see him coming up w/ a virtuoso performance against us.
This was an amazing game. Shitty officiating on BOTH ends, but just an amazing finish. To me Barca would have won big if they stopped letting Alves boot the ball off the pitch every time down.
Toure is indispensable to that team.
I think Barca takes it to Man U.
somebody wake me up when football (real football, not soccer) is on…this might be the least interesting sport ever…sorry, europeans, the shit fuckin sucks.
it’s like hockey, only with less scoring

@ Random Guy
I have witnessed plenty of soccer (errr… football?) posts in the past. TSS is worldwide!
you forgot to mention the 3 or 4 certain penalties that weren’t given!
that was the absolute worst display of refereeing I have ever seen in my life.
I’m a Gunner, but shit, you had to feel for Chelsea, they dominated the entire match and Barca scored on their ONLY shot on goal.
but Pique’s handball should have definitely been given, and Eto’o's was just blatant, you can’t jump and defend a shot with your hand above your head.
all in all, absolute farce. Chelsea were the better team in both games and shut Barca aka “the best team in the world” completely out of the game.
@ The Real Anonymous
hmm…guess i never noticed before.
sherm Says:
it’s like hockey, only with less scoring
———————————————-
Nah bruh, its like hockey, but infinitely better.
@Sherm – stick yourself.
@Devin – Did we watch the same set of games btw Chelsea and Barca?
Chelsea played ultra-defensively and scored a beautiful, but ultimately, flukish goal (despite the crackers Essien has scored in the past).
Arsenal disappointed yet again, but C. Ronaldo is still a cunt.
Congrats to TSS on the Vibe #12 spot! Should’ve been higher though. Why Gotty the only one on there that didn’t have his pic posted? Hahaha….
@ Random Guy
You should search some topics when you have the time. I am not into the sport personally but have noticed some pretty in-depth discussions here. You may like what you find.
“Why Gotty the only one on there that didn’t have his pic posted?”
LOL!
@ Deen – sorry for not liking your pansy-ass sport…a bunch of emaciated-looking white guys (with the occasional brother or latino) run back and forth on a gigantic field for 90 minutes, usually to a 1-0 or 2-1 score…am i getting all of this? sorry, i could’nt concentrate on typing, what with all the excitement of soccer distracting me…
Manchester United >>> your favorite team
I can’t even really talk about this game, it makes me so mad. Huge chelsea fan, watched the whole game while the official called the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen. Even that red car AGAINST barc. was idiotic. Anyways whats done is done, I’m sad we won’t get a shot at those Man U bastards. Ah well Nuggets are doing extraordinary so I’ll keep my spirits up.
But I hope that official had an unsafe trip to his car/quick flight in the morning.
@ sherm
Get off the sherm-stick and keep it moving. No one asked for your dumb opinion and no one wants you to like it.
I’m no Chelsea fan, but the I’m kind of buying into the conspiracy theory that is floating around. How on earth did the referee not give those penalty decisions, the mind boggles.
Drogba last it though at the end in front of the camera, he has offered a statement of apology, but damn was he fuming.
Just see on the news that the referee is currently receiving police protection at his home in Norway.
As Drogba aptly put it, Ovrebo’s refereeing was a f*cking disgace.
Imo Drogba showed remarkable self control.
And the fools @ UEFA still refuse to use video replay as a tool.
@ Sherm.
“a bunch of emaciated-looking white guys (with the occasional brother or latino) run back and forth on a gigantic field for 90 minutes”
Aren’t you confusing with baseball?
Although. There’s no real running in baseball.
lol
Barca had 65% ball possession in both games. Chelsea r an attackn team bt were kept in their own half most of da time. Now tell me who trully deserved to win
@Sherm, unless I was mistakenly watching The Minstrel Show over last few nights, I saw at least 6 black players on the pitch during the Chelsea vs Barcelona match. At least six black players during the Arsenal vs Man United match and at least six players during the Hamburg vs Werder Bremen match.
So not sure what you mean by the occasional brother.
Heck from the aforementioned matches alone I saw players from nations such as Brazil, England, France, Italy, South Korea, African Nations, Scotland, Croatia, Argentina, Iceland etc being represented.
If you truly doubt the universal appeal and popularity of football (or soccer as you may know it), then I recommend you tune into World Cup 2010 which will be taking place in South Africa next Summer.
Besides the thousands of fans lucky to be in attendance during the matches, many nations will be represented and hundreds of millions of fans around the globe will tune in for this event.
This ain’t no small fry sport, it is pound for pound the biggest sports phenomenon around the world.
I got uncles in Mozambique and they tell me you got kids in the slum, they might not have much, but they sure do know who Manchester United, Critiano Ronaldo and David Beckham are. This is like amongst the poorest people in the world, but they love football,
I got uncles in India, heck they tell me in places like Bombay and New Delhi they are freaking football crazy.
Go to anywhere from Sao Paolo, Brazil all the way to Tokyo, and you will witness first hand how big this game is.
The people of the world love it, it’s not just a European thing, I’m giving it circa 15 years before the USA catches up with the rest of the globe. I’ve seen the grass roots facilities that they are instilling on your side of the Atlantic in relation to football, it’s going to get bigger your side of the pond to. Not over night, but gradually.
It’s a universal sport, nothing to do with skin tone or nationality, that’s why the world embraces it.
I am still hurting after tues
But Arsenal were clearly not the best team. If healthy no team on the planet can handle Arsenal.
I defend that against ANY and ALL teams.
@ sherm -
you know whats funny.. alot of folks hate on the game until you see it done right.
Next year do yourself a favor and stop equating a sport to how masculine you are for watching it. Then again you prob watch golf.
Man U, the whole way

GO BARCELONA GO !
Let’s Get It !!
BARCA!!! VICTORY!!! NEEDED!!!
Chelsea bunkered down @ the Camp Nou to get a draw. They came back, pushed forward slightly, and got an early strike in the return leg. The only thing they dominated in this game were scoring chances, which they decided not to capitalize on. Essien (who is their best player) stepped up, and no one else decided to follow his lead. It’s unfortunate that Drogba decided to follow in Terry and Ballack’s footsteps and attempt to bully the ref after the match. Terry and Ballack are known for that; Drogba is only known for flopping every now and then. I hope they consider the circumstances before handing down his punishment.
@ Sherm – Why are you reading this post if futbol is so boring? Why waste your time posting a response?
Arsenal is young and will return, with Arshavin in tow.
first of all i’ma barça fan, so with that in mind I must recognize the refereein was kinda bad, but what chelsea fans seem to avoid is that the same can be said for the first game in barcelona, only this time it was barça who suffered from the bad refereein.
But, above all the referee shit, barcelona was the only team who tried to play (not even nice, just play) in both games while chelsea bitch ass strategy was to foul any barça player as soon as he had a chance to do anything, and kick the ball the farer the better. that’s why football has done justice to that.
go barça we got this year on lock
