After the first one its been all down hill for AZ…following Nas’ coat tails hasnt quite paid off for him…
AZ…zzzzzzzzzz…
He has the voice. He has the flow. He has the lyricism. He gets listenable if not necessarily inspired beats. He even has/had the connects/label deals…
So why has AZ never blown?
I need a little acronym for cats like him where you really cant figure out why it never happened for ‘em.
Maybe it’s simple as: WN (WhyNots) or NQ’s–NotQuite.
I don’t know–any thoughts?
Fuck y’all man, Sosa will always be ill. Can’t wait for that new album.
drake signed a deal with universal/motown…check xxl for more details
Now Drake got a deal and Sosa don’t… that’s what i’m sayin’ i think this cat is cursed… or blackballed or somethin’.
@Canseco
Az wont dumb it down like most mainstream artists…
Az stays relevant in the hood, and only rap about hood shit (with hood politics mixed in) thats possibly why he has not ‘blown’ they way we all excepted….
As long as he is eating & spreading love to his family/hood i’d say he blew up! I appreciate a nigga that can still seat on his block (exp in NY) after they were in the industry for as long as Sosa was.
So why has AZ never blown?

A combination of bad record deals, poor promotion & lack of artistic direction. Dude has no idea what a hit record looks like. It’s not as easy as it used to be in the 90’s, just rapping over popular 70’s Soul/Funk instrumentals. That doesn’t cut it in ‘09.
AZ sosa still had classic songs after Doe or Die but i will admit that he hasnt had a cohesive album all the way thru since
@ Amp
Dude has no idea what a hit record looks like.

lol!!! that just sounded funny to me. Prolly true tho. Some guys you can make a clear case for or against (ie. “his voice is annoying”…”he only raps in one style”… “no subject variety”…”whack beats”, etc.)
But AZ doesn’t seem to be anymore guilty of any of the biz’s sins than any other bankable emcee out there.
Again, i ain’t ready to take up a picket sign on the cat’s behalf, but he lack of success just seems odd all things considered.
QB Syndrome fam. Same as Tragedy lol
But I say this…
AZ might go over alotta heads. G-Man’s definition of the “QB Syndrome” is…
“…so lyrically dense & wrapped up in his own slang that he forgets the listener…”
It requires more brain power to appreciate an artist like AZ then an artist like Gucci Mane.
Tragedy… Mega… Questionable Beats Syndrome
AZ might go over alotta heads (Retroactive pause).
AZ from Bk tho….
wowwww can’t believe the hate I’m seein for AZ right now. It’s all good, everyone got their own opinions, but my TSS fam…really!? At least Flea is holdin me down, I see you!
Anyhow, while Undeniable had a few wack cuts, the album itself was far from wack. Game Don’t Stop, Life On The Line, the track with Styles, the title track (which was like my blunt cruise anthem for the summer) to name a few. Yes he had some garbage albums but to say he hasn’t had quality music since Doe Or Die is blasphemous. Aziatic? AWOL? The Format?
AZ is a lyrical beast. Who else rhymes like him?
@disastix
We not hating on Sosa, we hating on Sosa’s career,,,
I loved AZIATIC, 9 lives, AWOL…and why the hell yall forgetting about Pieces of a Man!!!!!
grrr @TSS family
I’m not hating, just stating my opinion. I still listened to him up until maybe 2 albums ago.
And yes, I’m aware of where AZ is from. QB Syndrome affects a lot of dudes…but mainly just QB aggins lol.
Mega… Questionable Beats Syndrome
==============
I actually like Mega’s ear for beats
It’s not as easy as it used to be in the 90’s, just rapping over popular 70’s Soul/Funk instrumentals. That doesn’t cut it in ‘09.

09 hit= sampling ’80’s pop…its still easy
Sosa is nice and undeniable had some dope tracks
“Dead End” was the only record I kept off Undeniable.
Everything else was…eh…
Time to start playing “Dead End” again though. Perfect summer song in my humble opinion.
I don’t think any of his albums are outstanding, but he sure does have some outstanding tracks and verses.
The Essence with NAS and of course that legendary verse on Life’s A Bitch are the ones that immediately come to mind.
The L.E.S. remix of Sugarhill is also a vintage cruising and chill out jam.
Damn I got BLASTED for saying AZ was overrated in a topic talking about who’s best verse outshined they career. Changin my screen to Soothsayer
Doe or Die is dope.
I thought Undeniable was a decent album. It definitely was some cutz on it. Sometimes I think ppl hate albums just b/c a few scrubs here n there say they don’t like it. bandwagon haters.
Who cares if dude was never able to “blow”.
In a game where most rappers never “blow” and most quality music goes unrecognized… If you make good music and your making a living doing it your ahead of the game in my book. Yall dudes are trippin. Reading soundscan instead of lyric sheets.
I stopped keeping track of AZ after A.W.O.L. & I like dude as a rapper.
overall i would give the az catalog a C+ (he’s about 7.7/10 on my grading scale). his flow is fluid and his production is consistently decent. i like that he’s been able to eat without pandering to radio and video playlists, the man has stayed true since his debut. while most will unanimously say that his verse on “life’s a bitch” is classic, az is a niche rapper whose style is not very accessible to the majority of people who live outside of ny. as stated above, he is quite simply over the heads of a lot of listeners.
Uhh…”Undeniable” didn’t suck. That is all.
One.
AZ is a beast hands down. Undeniable was a decent album. I dont even need to really speak know patience said it clearly “he is quite simply over the heads of a lot of listeners”
AZ is from brooklyn you fucking morons and sure A might rap about ‘money’ but he always has gems in his songs aside from a bunch of untalented overrated 4 hit wonder pop stars making on that solely AZ is 1 of the most underrated artists to ever bless the mic, Nas violated him and you dickheads couldn’t tell the difference bewteen a rapper or a MC if your lives depended on it SMFH
peace to the god sosa
