To those out of the loop, the Champions League is like the NCAA tournament of European club soccer. Obviously though, it’s a hell of a lot bigger. Reigning champions Manchester United, lackluster on the pitch recently, traveled to the Estádio do Dragão (Stadium of the Dragon) to take on FC Porto yesterday. United needed a win to advance, Porto just a tie. The only problem was that no English team had ever beaten Porto on Portuguese soil.
Just six minutes in, Manchester’s lone Portuguese starter fires a cracker. 40 yards out. 65 mph.
Porto never recovers and Manchester moves on. All because of Ronaldo (the newer, skinnier one). He’s the reigning World Player of the Year and likely to take the award for ’09 as well. Yes, he thinks he’s God—and occasionally he plays like it. The great ones do.

Great game. Great write up

the goal last night from nearly mid-field
was wild. And Gotty I’m nominating Laura Dore
for one of the ‘cooler’ spots.

Ronaldo’s goal was “Amazing” good post by TSScrew
Chelsea vs Liverpool (Champions League Match on Tuesday) easily the best match of the season.
What a spectacle it was, shame Steven Gerrard wasn’t fit to play though. It would have been different.
Chelsea vs. Liverpool was a good game, they gave up way too many goals and could’ve scored 8 or 9 theirselves.
I’ve always wanted to get into soccer but I guess I’m not cultured enough.
Good shit, I’ll see your C. Ronaldo goal and raise you this one:

Venezuelan defender Jose Manuel Rey (Caracas FC) from 30 meters out against River Plate in Copa Libertadores (South American version of Champions League)
never too late Terrail. pick any team and just never stop rooting for them. in soccer, every game is a big game (because there’s no playoffs) so every win is as rewarding as the next.
missed the scouse/chel$ki game but I have a feeling had gerrard played, it would’ve been a more cagey affair. chel$ki would’ve prevailed regardless, though– essien and ballack as destroyers in front of the defense is too much for anyone
That’s good but this is better:-

Anyway, I’m rooting for Arsenal to win the Champions League, hoping they over come Manchester United and don’t care if it’s against Chelsea or Barcelona in the final.
Arsenal play great football, so good to watch, and hoping they go all the way this time
arsenal fans with their lame ass rguments that they play “attractive football.” so do barcelona– except they actually score a lot.
i raise y’all this one. against munich no less.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a Man U vs. Arsenal final….. I’m still kinda salty that Milan didn’t fare better; I love watching Ronaldinho (aka “The Brazilian version of Rafer ‘Skip to my lou’ Alston”) doing his thing; but alas
@Devgusto, Arsenal DO play attractive football and DO SCORE A LOT, check the result against Villareal the other night. They might slip at the final hurdle, but damn do they play good football.
I’ll raise the bar further, Xabi Alonso for Liverpool against Newcastle United, peach of a goal:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfGp_6XP6_Q
Come on, a ManU post?
Chelsea-Liverpool was a much better game. Porto didn’t even look like they were interested in scoring for about 60 minutes of that game.
Can’t wait to see Barca embarass Chelsea.
Porto didn’t even look like they were interested in scoring for about 60 minutes of that game.

I’m guessing he was pacing himself lol. I don’t see how soccer players run so damn much.

BarcA-United in the final….epic
@Greums, right on, right on, fuck Man United!
@Devgusto, yeah I’ll tip my hat to Drogba for that goal, class goal, class player, but he went down like a bitch on Tuesday night when he was rolling around the grass like he was injured real bad. Give the man an oscar.
I’ll raise the bar further. Zinadine Zidane, probably pound for pound the greatest footballer of the last 20 years or so. Now watch this goal and listen to the commentator go wild, Zidane va va voom!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXdcYrec4Ms
Anyway, if you can all tune in, it’s FA Cup Semi finals this weekend from Wembley:-
Everton vs Man Utd (Sunday, kick off 4pm UK Time)
Chelsea vs Arsenal (Sat, kick off 5.15pm UK time)
@ Baby Paw
If they released a video of Drogba’s best plays it’d have to be two discs: One for his goals & one for his flops.
@MZ, ha ha I guess so, Drogba, when he is firing on all cylinders, top notch, but when he does his primadona act, on and off the field, tsk tsk tsk.
Do you rate Nicolas Anelka? I thought he made a huge difference, when he came on for Chelsea the other night against Liverpool.
Really amazing player though, he makes scoring look so easy, I think when you take all of his transfer fees into account he is the most expensive player in the history of the game.
He’s calmed down a lot now, but when he was younger and seemed to be influenced by his brother, it kind of screwed things up.
But what a player, every club he has played for he always delivers.
yo, if anybody deserves to win this year champions, that team is barcelona, aint no other team playin the magical football my team be playin… i’ma post a proof:

Liverpool for the Premier League.
Anybody, but Shaitan United. ;)
the quintuple is on the horizon, haters.
I don’t know how I missed out on this soccer post for so long, but I’m in the building. Barcelona FTW, Man U FTSuck! The Liverpool-Chelski game showcased some of the sloppiest, poorest excuses for defending I’ve seen in a good long while. I hate Liverpool with most of the bones in my body, and I was glad to see the Scouse bastahds sent packing.
Wow.. finally a Football(soccer) post on TSS and I miss it.
No one says that Barca don’t play attractive football but Arsenal are known for it. As a Supporter of the Gunners, the last team we want to have to play in the finals is Barca for the simple reason of having to beat TH14 and thus deny him a Championship .. fuck dat.
When did TSS start doing FOOTBALL posts?? Good stuff, though a little short. I think Arsenal will have enough to beat United over 2 legs. We have the advantage of the away leg first.
As for Barcelona, good team they are, they rarely prove it against English teams. In the final against Arsenal, they did nothing for 80 minutes against 10 men, Chelsea knocked them out a few years back, they did absolutely nothing against Man Utd last year. I can’t see them beating Chelsea, regardless of how good Messi is playing. They can’t cope with physical teams.
And just to throw in a little video, this is one of the greatest World Cup goals ever scored, by an Arsenal legend. Commentary is quality!
