If you’re not a fan of baseball, this may not be for you.
This is for the real fans. Yeah, I’m talking to you. You completely equate Spring with the crack of the bat, parking lot pre-gaming at 10 a.m. and of course justified heckling even South Park would blush to. Yes, we are the idiots who drop a bill to sit in rain for three consecutive hours. Like Phillies fans who waited two decades, regaining their full pride with their team’s championship or Tampa Bay who were content with just even being there and surpassing both super powers of the Yanks and Sox as division leaders. That’s the essence of the game and the devotion of being a fan. This devotion is why after countless seasons, the die-hard fans survive.
We recognize that same passion when we write about music as well as our other outside interests. So like an album review, we break down what shines, what falters and remind you why we even give a care in the first place. If you read this far, welcome brethren. We’re fans too. And here’s our take on the 2009 MLB season, starting with the National League first.
NL East Projected Standings — Jason Hortillas
1.Philadelphia Phillies
2.New York Mets
3.Florida Marlins
4.Atlanta Braves
5.Washington Nationals
The obvious choice is to go with defending champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. It’s hard to argue against it when the New York Mets rotation is not solid outside of Johann Santana. Obviously, the Mets have addressed their bullpen woes by signing J.J. Putz and last year’s saves leader, Francisco Rodriguez. With the top two teams again in contention, the bullpen won’t determine the NL East crown but it will be in the Mets hands not to blow it a third time. The Atlanta Braves picked up sought after starter Derrick Lowe, but the loss of Mark Texiera last midseason put the nail in the coffin. The Florida Marlins shown “rays” of light as an early division leader last year and ended with being a spoiler with players like Hanley Ramirez. Looks like the Washington Nationals may take that role for the division this year with younger talents like Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes.
NL Central Projected Standings — Patrick M.
1. Chicago Cubs
2. St. Louis Cardinals
3. Cincinnati Reds
4. Milwaukee Brewers
5. Houston Astros
6. Pittsburgh Pirates
In 2009 the NL Central will feature the story of a long-suffering franchise trying to escape its sordid history. No, I’m not talking about the Cubs and their insufferable, obnoxious, bandwagon, cock-sucking fans. I’m talking about the Pittsburgh Pirates who are suffering from the dreaded “Curse of The Chronic.” As in they haven’t finished over .500 since 1992. One more year would set an MLB record and as my projected standings show, I think we’ll be seeing history. As for the rest of the division, it will probably be closer than last year’s thrashing, but the Cubs should have enough offensive power to outlast the Pujols’s. Relying on Dempster, Zambrano, and Harden to make it through the year healthy and effective is mighty risky, however so hopefully, the Cards can pull it out. Can you tell I’m sick of living on the North Side yet?
NL West Projected Standings — MZ
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
2. Arizona Diamondbacks
3. Colorado Rockies
4. San Diego Padres
5. San Francisco Giants
Manny Ramirez. Many believe this name will be the only reason the Dodgers will take this league again. True enough, he sparked a post All-Star break rally last year, but this is a solid lineup without him and even better with him. The departure of Derek Lowe will hurt and they’ll be relying on a young pitching core. Luckily for them, the Diamondbacks have the exact opposite problem and will have to rely on Brandon Webb & Co. to carry an inconsistent offense. So whoever gets the most out of their weaknesses will win this tight division. Just keep in mind that arms wear out quicker than bats and LA has plenty of bats. Colorado and San Diego will only make headlines if contenders come to pilfer their ripe pitching staffs, come late July.
NL Wildcard Projected Standings — Jason Hortillas
1. New York Mets
2. St. Louis Cardinals
3. Arizona Diamondbacks
Note I didn’t put the Milwaukee Brewers. That’s because they no longer have C.C. Sabathia. Without that power arm, the Mets would have easily taken the wildcard last year as they blew their own division lead. Right on the Amazin’s back will be the ‘Cards who also will have another battle with the Cubs for the division, and St. Louis will fight for this as soon as the Cubs clinch. Arizona rounds third as the NL West typically has sub par records and those regular season losses will hurt them down the stretch.
Tune in tomorrow as we give our predictions on the American League.

MILWAUKEE!!!!
Yovani Gallardo = breakout star of the year
and that offense is still potent as ever…more experience so so young too…Braun, Fielder, Hardy, Hall, Weeks….solid core in the line-up!
Brewers will stay in contention for the Wild Card and the Central for sho!!!!
*ends hometown rant*
lol….nice to see MLB coverage on TSS…props!
I think the Cardinals are going to take the division from the Cubbies, if reports are correct and Carpenter is finally healthy. They have enough to take the Cubs especially with Harden not pitching well this spring training and Zambrano I think is comming of surgery this year as well. Watch out for the Reds to get into that Wild Card talk. The Marlins are a year away from really making some noise the NL east, it is going to be a 2 team race
bet the Phils and the Mets. The Mets better hope Delgado gives them the year he had after the all star break for the whole season or their new bullpen won’t matter.
GIANTS IN LAST PLACE!?!?!?! TRIPPIN
Dodgers have one bat and bootsy pitching.
Lincecum, Johnson, Cain…(zito, break out year HA).
Pablo Sandoval is sav, Freddie Lewis is coming around, Bengie and Winn play their parts. DON’T SLEEP ON SF.
The Giants don’t have any bats, unless the pitching staff has found a secret stash of B. Bonds. The Giants will have to win alot of 1-0 games.
yo guys are we doing a fantasy league this year?
Braves finish 4th in the division?? Yeah right! We’re reloaded and ready to go. Just because we don’t have the big names doesn’t mean the talent isn’t there. Watch us beat the champs on national tv Sunday night for a preview of things to come.
‘PHILLY NIGGAZ GOT EM SCARED IN THA BUILDIN, GUESS THEY SEEN ONE TOO MANY BEARD IN THA BUILDIN, WHO YOU KNOW KNOW WIT AN ILLA TEAM?’ – Beanie Sigel
GO PHILLIES, WORLDS CHAMPS!!!!
sorry i may never get the chance to brag again for the rest of my life being a philadelphia fan and all, i gotta take advantage.
C’mon Patrick. Keep the faith. You gotta ride with the Cubs regardless. This time, it really IS our year. Lol (like I haven’t said that before).
Just because we don’t have the big names doesn’t mean the talent isn’t there.
=========
I don’t know if i root for the Braves b/c they’re always on goddamn TBS, nostalgia or what. But they never have big names yet they produce. Well…at least they used to.
Ya’ll got my hopes up talking about the Reds contending for wild card… but I know better than that.
All I know about MLB is Derek Sanderson Jeter- SuperSexy!!!
MZ: The Reds got a young and talented pitching staff, that will keep them in games. And they got some young hitters that can carry the offense.
giants last in the west? you gotta be kidding. that’s insulting.
giants last in the west? you gotta be kidding. that’s an obvious mistake.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Manny can translate what he did last year into an entire season. I have no reason to believe he can’t so I can honestly see the Phils and Dodgers fighting it out again.
I have no faith in the Mets…none.
@ D. Howser
I’ve been telling Cubs faithful that this is their year, but Im setting up for the Sawx (Red of course) to beat them in the World Series and me to run down Clark St laughing maniacally at crying fans before I’m stoned to death with Wrigley hot dogs (no ketchup of course)
GO NOVA!!
Giants have one of the best pitching staffs league. MZ lost.
My grammar also lost.
I wanna give a bigtime F-you to all Mets, Phillies, Marlins, and Nationals fans! The Bravos are back and it feels like 95′ again. Glavine’s back, Chip might hit .400 this year……sorry we’re playoff material….excuse me….. Division winner material. Time to get back to reality and stop living in Bizaro-world for a change…..
Philly on Top I love it
Manny is gonna handle it this year for the Dodgers! No doubt! FYI if you have an iphone and wanna keep track on any team or player you can download a free app called Sporting News Baseball at the itunes store: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=309813391&mt=8
The Giants will finish second in NL West for sure!!!!
Eh behind Tiny Tim how good is the pitching staff?
Cain…hasnt broken out yet, starting to look like he never will
Johnson…40 something. 150 innings tops.
Sanchez…Ok good enough for a 4.
Barry Zito? Please
Last I checked though, you have to hit the ball. to score some runs (crap just spilled my shit everywhere)
… Ok Im back
Who the fuck is going to do that for the Giants? They are an easy third behind Zona and LA and probably behind Colorado too (got some serious young talent.) Last isnt out of the questions.
Keep dreaming Bay Area
If it makes you feel better, the Giants are now 2nd. Which earns them nothing more than an early end to the season. No wildcard for them, so what’s it really mean?
