Introducing Mayer Hawthorne And The County…
AUDIO By LC Weber on April 2, 2009 at 4:01 pmHaircut is as Detroit as Faygo, Motown, Belle Isle, and Lafayette Coney Island with extra chili and onions all in one. He’s as white as the driven snow and as filled with soul as Aretha Franklin on Easter Sunday after a hotplate of Roscoe’s. And he’s one of the greatest friends I have.
“I can’t imagine Los Angeles without you,” he said to me over coffee when I told him I was moving back to Michigan. Truth was I couldn’t imagine Los Angeles without him either, but he wasn’t going to be there much anymore anyhow. Haircut was doing something many people move to Hollywood to do, but few accomplish — he was succeeding. He was becoming Stones Throw’s newest and most talked about artist, Mayer Hawthorne; a Soul revitalizer with a sound more organic than fresh herbs and spices.
The great thing about writing for TSS is we get to talk about music we really love, and it’s fairly surreal to be talking about your kin. I’ve been blinded to his hype and deafened to his buzz, because I’ve had no way of gaging what was fabricated in my mind and what was truly reaching the masses. When I originally approached Gotty™ with Mayer Hawthorne and The County, he wasn’t sure of the Yacht Rock I was trying to sell him. But after a glimpse of the Mayer’s heart-shaped 45, a write-up in Playboy and a live performance at the Grand Ole Party at SxSW, Gotty™ told me to put the shit out there.
So here we are. I’m a far poorer salesperson for Mayer Hawthorne than his music is. If you listen, it should sell itself to you. Enjoy!

Haircut.
Nuff said.
I’m not sure how I feel about this.
I’d heard about this dude on a forum & the music is undeniably dope, but I always feel a ways when someone takes what’s traditionally been recognized as “Black” & co-opts it.
If you saw my face right now, you’d see the most puzzled look.
I dig the music, but I’m not sure I should.
Nice, I fuckin dig it. Bringin Yacht rock to the motherfuckin prairies yo!
Awww Amp… come on now. This man grew up around the D and Motown… been spinning there for years… give him his due. He’s not new to this game, fam…
he sounds like me sangin some old al green joint…in a good way
I’m conflicted, cause I generally think the music is dope. My mind forces me to question this guy’s authenticity, but my heart says this shit is brilliant.
It’s a little confusing @ first but once you take into account who he is & hear him actually sing (which he can lol), the perception changes.
Amp doesn’t like him because he eats hot dogs with a Fork. lol!!!
Amp doesn’t like him because he eats hot dogs with a Fork. lol!!!

You figured me out! lol
Plus, he gets to eat dirty Coney’s with LC?
And I’m supposed to like this guy?
Nah, I’m playing lol…& I’ve been playing those two tracks back to back for the last half an hour.
I guess it’s safe to say that his music is growing on me lol.
Horses > Alligators
Mayer Hawthorne and the County….Mr. Hudson and the Library….hmm…
Hello everybody, how are you all doing today?
Mayer Hawthorne > Asher Roth
Quality wins out every time. Can’t even front on this shit. He needs to stay the fuck away from Mark Ronson though.
Horses > Alligators

Horses > Alligators

Not hardly.
dope…. and i’m feeling them glasses; gonna cop some from eBay.
09s Elton John??
Kinda flat and boring?? I can tell what he’s trying to do… but it seems to lack any kind of ‘magic’…?
Kind of really flat mono-tone and not a whole lot of spark and bang.
But keep trying it could get better. like even though Amy Winehouse was a ‘fabricated’ sorta kitch by-the-numbers pop take on the ’soul diva’ sound, it kinda worked cos she fuckin BANGED that stuff out, and goddam it it sounded like she meant it.
This guy however… sounds like he made this stuff up on a saturday afternoon five minute break from the playstation… kinda so boring its torturous to listen to actually. But the publics probably gonna LOVE it!!!
Dope post. Mayer Hawthorne / DJ Haircut is doing some truly dope things….
Props to LC, Gotty and the whole TSS crew.
I shouldn’t even comment on this, becuase I feel like I want to re-tell LC’s whole story from my perspective. But I’ll skip all that and just give props to the homie Haircut. There’s no re-hashed and recycled-ness about it. The soul is in this mans heart.
