The internet is always a wonderfully amazing place. Even when you feel like you’ve seen & heard it all musically, you haven’t. In fact, we’re probably a maximum 1/4 of the way into the dubious amounts of material yet to be unveiled, dug up or stumbled upon & shared.
Today’s exhibit: Gang Starr’s Moment Of Truth Sampler Cassette
Here’s the sampler promo tape of “Moment of Truth”. You won’t see any unreleased cuts that didn’t make the album on there but the great thing about it is that you hear DJ Premier & Guru talking and presenting in-between each tracks.
We’ve been here several times before. Nothing more really to be said about the album because it’s one of those that should stand the test of time. Here, what you have is just another way of listening to it, with the helpful guidance of Guru & Premier on the making of the music.
Tracklist
1. Intro
2. You Know My Steez
3. Royalty
4. Work
5. What I’m Here
6. B.I. Vs. Friendship

Too bad they disolved the group, atleast when can still listen to their work.
^ What, didn’t you hear?
Guru is Gangstarr…or so he says.
Fame is a terrible drug.
Classic fucking album!!! I memorized every damn song on that joint, played it non-stop along with Cappadona’s “The Pillage”. Ahhh….the high-school days, hiphop was easier to absorb then. Now we get inundated with way too much material.
Whatever, happened to Shiggy Sha?
^ Word to a classic.
I remember we bumped Moment of Truth in the locker room before our basketball games and practices. Reminisce the 90s.
Amp: I heard that foolishness, I choose to ignore it and Remember Guru as a talented MC instead of a biter jackass
Douglas Howeser, were you on my team??? Ha, I doubt it but we did the same time some games/practices. We’d bump a different album every practice/game, and Moment of Truth was one of the top ’90′s albums we bumped. MOT is definitely my fav Gang Starr album.
But between SITA, DO, HTE, and MOT which would most of y’all say is their best? (Id still say MOT).
Howser*
Easily Moment Of Truth.
Best part about this tape is it’s missing that atrocious ode to shopping: “The Mall (feat. G-Dep & Shiggy Sha)”
One of the gayest & worst choruses ever in the history of rap…”Go shoooopppinngggg, go shhooppinngg”
& Guru’s a fucking idiot for not parting amicably with DJ Premier.
DJ Premier IS Gang Starr.
“The Mall” > “She Knows What She Wants”
@Teef, The Mall is a fantastic track, the comedy value is priceless, plus it features Shiggy Sha, which is worth the admission price alone.
Is Hannibal Stax from “Itz A Set Up” one of the cats in N.Y.G’z?
@ Flea – those two were on heavy rotation in me and my boyz’ wheels in the high school days, too. I agree, it was a much simpler, easier time back then (musically and otherwise)…throwin either one of those cds on now always gets me reminiscing
@ TC – haven’t heard MOT in ages, but if I remember right, that song was another misstep as well, lol…I bet they were Guru’s ideas
“The Mall” > “She Knows What She Wants”
============
True.
But “The Mall” stick knocks to me lol. The beat + the chorus = theme song material
Dr. Dre’s Roadium Swap Meet mix tapes >>>>> “Albee Square Mall” >>>>>>>>>>> “The Mall”
Let’s see ’98…”The Mall” WAS my theme song. All I had to do was go to school, work and buy J’s and Fubu. Ahhh the life lol
Something in me (no homo) kinda desires for “The Mall” to be on the in-store playlist for urban clothing stores. It’ll encourage more bread to be broken & the popping of more tags
@ TC: Now those were the fucking days! Perfect summary of teenage life in tha 90′s.
@ Teef: Real talk!!! If I heard that in the mall while I was shopping, I’d whip out my credit card with the quickness.
I hear it in my head while doing my online shopping, right before hitting the “Proceed To Checkout” button. Soon as I get that confirmation email the chorus hits hehe
Beef With Me Hangs Around Like An Unpaid Bill. (Quote: Freddie Foxxx, The Militia).
The Militia and Know My Steeze might constitute the two nastiest remixes of great songs in hiphop history… Premo had like a 5-7 year run in the 90s where you just couldn’t touch him…
^ & what was also dope about those 2 remixes was who they got for the guest spots.
One of my favorite record…
I remember banging this shit the whole summer 98 like it was yesterday!
summer of ’98 was crazy i had 2 jobs. i used to bang work before work then i would rewind it so when i started the 86 beemer it was already cued up when i got off.
