“Bullets Squeeze Bayou…”
AUDIO By Contra™ on April 15, 2009 at 12:28 pmThere was a time when Roc-A-Fella had pretty much all my playlists in figure-four leg locks. There was a time when it seemed like every member in the crew was determined to churn out an anthem or two before passing the mic to the next consigliere and ultimately back to their godfather.
Gone is that time, but not those anthems.
The song that brought this to mind was “What We Do”. I’ll be damned if this song still doesn’t have the effect it did when it first came out. Maybe even more, given it’s nostalgic value. It’s a solid monument to an era when the Roc not only had it on lock, but they were doing it the right way. Just Blaze was massacring beat after beat, Kanye was in training, Sig, Bleek and the rest of the clique played their positions, and Jay led valiantly. Radio, clubs, streets and beyond. They seemed unstoppable.
We can speculate all we want as to what led to that epic downward spiral, but it seldom changes the facts. Remembering when that gnome-looking, bearded Philadelphian fellow first began spewing his high-pitched rhymes next to the Broad St. Bully, Bleek and Jay almost makes you forget the day Cassidy pulled his lyrical pants down and bent him against a wall of punchlines(I refuse to pause that).
My theory remains that his pitch got higher after he got deflowered in that battle.
Regardless, there was a time when Roc-A-Fella reigned. Now, Dame Dash is a joke, Jay-z is a married man, Kanye is a gay fish and the rest are dogs off their leashes at best.
The times, they are a changing.

This is one of the only songs I can stand by him…the voice just pierces my ear drums…
If anyone out there has the rocfella hot 97 freestyles in mp3, I will forever be in your debt.
Great post Contra – Damn I miss the good ol’ days. Heading out to the 18 & over clubs, banging the state property album – Specifically “Mommy do you want me” by the young gunz.
*rocafella – obviously
great write up…say what you want about Free but his first 2 albums were amazing…no skip button needed for both of those
Hm. Well despite Freeway losing that “battle”. Freeway>Cassidy. That is a fact. Philadelphia Freeway + Free At Last >>>>>>>>>>>> Anything Cassidy has attempted to do. Someone wake me up when Cassidy decides to make a more than mediocre album.
@ The Disgruntled Baller a.k.a Cooler bishes start my day right

@MilkMedia
I fucking love you. Thank you.
^Not pausing that, because I mean it.
*e-hugs Milk*
Jay’s supporting cast is how he got his street cred
Move keys, call me the piano man..
Love this damn song.
Freeway’s beard.
I can still go word for word for the entire song. Stae Prop brought the soul to the Roc. Not saying Jay isn’t soulful, but he just doesn’t exude “The Struggle” like Beans & Free. The urgency in their verses, the real sense of desperation, that’s what always grabbed me. These dudes were fresh off the block & you could hear it. Real hustlers don’t grind for sneaker money or Benz coupes. They hustle to keep the lights on & the seeds fed.
“…It’s a cold winter, y’all niggas betta bundle up…”
Real rap.
This song is pure adrenaline.
Half the shit he’s saying doesnt even rhyme. He’s annoying
Y’all shoulda posted the video too.
I was at a Kweli concert in Feb and he was late so the DJ was playing classics. Tribe, Big, Nas, etc. The WHOLE spot went crazy when he played this. Everyone was goin’ word for word. Classic track.
EARLY!!!

I thought it was “Bullets breeze bayou…”
That was my JOINT. I swore Freeway could’ve killed any damn beat then. Early 2000 decade flashback! Music was the sh*t back then. I had any almost every hot song and mixtape in high school back then! Back when Dipset and G-Unit was killing it, the Roc was on top, Three 6 Mafia (before the Academy Award) My Goodness!

“(I refuse to pause that)”
LMAO. That’s my new phrase. Thank you Contra. Pa-… oh wait. Dammit.
