“Successful”
AUDIO By Patrick M. on April 17, 2009 at 9:33 pmPersonally, I avoid Lil’ Wayne affiliated projects and artists, figuring that eventually what’s out there will trickle down to me through Young Money’s domination of Hip-Hop for everyone under 25. I do this because, frankly, my Weezy like/dislike ratio for every song he graces is also under 25. In a world of oversaturation, Young Money’s the King of the shotgun approach to music.
This explains my lateness to jumping on the Drake bandwagon, as I avoided our previous coverage of the So Far Gone mixtape. Having been exposed to it through while cruising around the Chi last Friday, I’ve discovered I’ve been missing out. Drake’s tape shows off his crooning and rhyming talents, and Wayne’s presence on a significant portion of the tracks indicates that he’s learned a thing or two about artist promotion from his Big Tymer patriarchs.
There’s plenty of good stuff on here, but the standout track is “Successful,” featuring Wayne and Trey Songz. Over a simple snare, Drake relishes his own successes, while reminiscing on the spoils and pressures that come with. The Lil’ Wayne influence on his rhyme style is staggering, specifically valuing wordplay over maintaining context within a verse. But the punch lines are consistent. Lines like “A lot of you sound like last year/the game needs change and I’m the mothafucking cashier,” keep coming throughout the song’s six minute odyssey.
What holds “Successful,” together though, is the Trey Songz chorus. (I want the money and the cars/the cars , the cars and the clothes/I suppose/I just want to be successful.) The “I suppose,” is a brilliant twist on traditional hedonism. It’s not that Drake and co. want the goods, it’s that they want what humans really crave, success. If it’s money, cars and hoez that symbolize success, then that’s what their after.
Maybe in ten years Drake and Wayne will join Jay and Nas in bemoaning success. For now though, looks like youth will be served.

I said this last time there was a “So Far Gone” post.
The way Hot97 & Flex have gotten behind Drake (Ayo!) in the past two days is crazy. New York is becoming well aware so the rest of the country shouldn’t be far behind.
And for the record, Drake isn’t Lil’ Wayne’s artist.

I’m surprised no one has spoken on “Congratulations”. That joint is definitely better than “bonus track” status, and was left out of So Far Gone initially. The song is dope.

and also Drake to me is significantly better then Wayne lyrically and at making good music… Wayne these days has an awfully hard time doing that.
So Far Gone is hella dope but too much singin on it for me, Comeback Season his joint before comeback season has more bars its not as good but he spits on it crazy

I say best song on that is the old as shit “november 18th”. By Far, I still bang that and it impresses almost everyone who i introduce it too.
The Dj screw cut is just so dope
This is probably one of the better tracks that I’ve heard in a long time. Crazy replay value.
This joint gets spins daily on the commute to/fro the workplace.
NDiamonds is posting that fire tonight
If the label doesn’t piggy-back off the success of So Far Gone, Drake will have truely caught a brick. I hope he’s been recording more of his own material and less of his “big/ lil’ brother”.
There is no reason why he shouldn’t have a major release before the end of the year.

Why?
if so, click my name and leave the link anywhere
its much ‘preciated.
Drake’s on Atlantic, which seems kinda sketchy but he’s managed by Hip Hop Since 1978 so he’s in capable hands.
No album in ‘09 = FAIL
So Far Gone shoulda been on a major.
Drake is ridiculously nice on the mic. I remember hearing Replacement Girl from him and thought he was just another Bow Wow cat that was gonna be marketed to the ladies, but damn I was wrong when I heard Comeback Season.
shout out to NDiamonds for the lainkity-lainks
I’m a little gone off that 151 and clonazepam so I’ll keep it brief. I couldn’t make it through the OP or comments but I wanted to say drake’s music has been a little breathe of fresh air for me personally. I know he isn’t any completely original artist, but he has found a way to mix rap/rnb in a way that I totally dig. His lyrics I dig, and his general presence on the might gives me a feelin I can relate to and vibe with. Call me officially on the bandwagon but when I’m grindin out some $$ on online ventures I’ll put his mixtapes on and play em all the way through. I hope he keeps up the good work.
Also I gotta say his tapes have some badass songs, houstatlantavegas obviously, a little bit, successful, but the # one jam I bump is November 18th. I immediately fell in love because it is the same beat as the Cruna song I fell in love with a while back, and the lyrics
“I sent your girl a message said see ya when I can,
She sent me one back,
But I aint never read it,
Cuz pussys only pussy and I get it when I need it.”
And “The game needs change and I’m the motherfuckin cashier.”
Sorry if my posts are incoherent, it’s one of those days.
Drake is representing Canada and Hip Hop Right. Quality Music

Might be my favorite line on the whole mixtape.

^ How’s that Diamond District? I’ve had it cued up all week but haven’t gotten to it yet.
^ Another dope joint… DC stand up.
Diamond District = quality music.
I didn’t know Oddisee could rhyme… the production is fucking “Rick-dickulous” (Word to SNL)
How’s that Diamond District? I’ve had it cued up all week but haven’t gotten to it yet

Same here. Is that the dirty version?
In The Ruff is the clean version..haven’t seen the dirty version yet.
The Dyme Def Mixtape thats posted above is pretty dope..don’t sleep.
@ NDiamonds – you know of a password for that KMD?
y’all already get that asher?
Asher Roth – Asleep in the Bread Aisle (Retail) (Dirty) (Grouprip):

I don’t get what you guys see in Drake, he’s not that interesting to listen to. Half the ninjaz up here in Toronto don’t even play his shit.
Ya’ll must not’ve gotten to “Uptown!” That joint sounds so dope in the whip… DYME DEF… remember the name! They got heat!
I think people over-hype dude to a certain extent, but he does have some real talent…he’s definitely got skills and kind of a laid-back flow that’s easy on the ears
There’s a definite Wayne influence stylistically on Drakes stuff, but I don’t think he has any of the problems that Wayne does as far as being able to stay on topic. This track is dope, and I thought “Say what’s real” was the most poignant shit on that whole tape – he says so much good shit on there.
“and everybody talks, and everybody listen, and somehow the truth just always comes up missin”
Kristina Debarge- “Goodbye” sounds like Keri Hilson…
So Far Gone is Dope but I like Room for Improvement & Comeback Season just as much. I think Drake is actually making Wayne say on his job and fuckin rhyme not as much autotune
Not sold on this drake cat yet.
Lil wayne’s verse, suckola.
The hook in this track seem a little boondock-esque to anyone else?
This is superlate, but as some cats still haven’t checked for Drake, it’s a good start for them. So Far Gone is big. It basically put Drake ahead of all the rappers people were saying to watch. In T-minus 2 years, he’ll be the new Wayne.
The key that mixtape is a y’all have different favourite song on it.
For any TX heads:

good point.
Cant get over the fact dude was on Degrassi and that war movie with Channing Tatum
He’s got skills though
Kristina Debarge- “Goodbye” sounds like Keri Hilson…

Man. I tried listening to that shit.
No success.
Drake should be affiliated with Wayne but he shouldn’t do too many songs with him…That was what made me say So Far Gone fell short of classis…Wayne fucks up everything on that CD lyrically in every sense….
I wish somebody would tell Lil Wayne was lyrical…he can rhyme but not in the sense that people should praise him…
Drake however is tight as hell man (pause)…Successful woulda been a classic joint if the hook just rode the rest of the song out and Wayne didn’t fucking rhyme at the end…One bad apple can spoil the batch…as far as wayne is concerned..his verse “sucks dick with teeth” © LC Weber
Anotha Time,
Mally
nickel for my thoughts, dimes in my bed
quarters of the kush keep the lines in my head
(c) Drake (off this song)
ive kept it in heavy rotation nonstop for a month now…too bad DRAKE didnt release this to get some $$$$, it woulda easily gone multiplatinum
Best I Ever Had could easily be released as a single for an album.
Big drake fan, but i know this is not the “cool” thing to say, but wayne killed that last verse. I would say he outshined drake on the track. I know everyones pressed on drake, but his verses could have been a lot better. specifically the first verse. I know everyone hates wayne so this is prob blasphemy
Would it be possible to get all of Drake’s music with the Lil’ Wayne verses edited out? I have totally avoided Drake because I am vehemently opposed to listening to Weezy. His voice and style just bothers me way too much. I just listened to that track and it was fucking sick… at least the beat fades out and lets you know that you can change the song before Wayne gets on it. Seriously though, I may just have to make an “edited” copy and pull all the Wayne verses out. That sounds like some serious hating, but does no one else have that problem? It really honestly kind of bothers me to hear Wayne soil a track with his rushed incoherent nursery rhymes…
His rhymes definitely where not rushed incoherent nursery rhymes, I think you not be listening cuz you dont like wayne
“How come I cant miss a woman, like I cant miss a court date
Cheese! but shes not in this portrait”
“I don’t want the glow,
I want the glory,
and im gonna fuck the world,
but this here is foreplay”
If I was going to edit anything out the song it would be drakes first verse. It sounds like he starts off freestyling and fucks up the vibe
its probably deliberate but i can’t get over the snare, it sounds like a garageband instrument. and honestly drake brings nothing new to the table
musicians are all just trying to fool the world into thinking that they’re ‘real’ and ‘worth paying for’, and im beyond tired of seeing rappers with the same image. im sure youre tired of hearing people complain about it too, but nobodys taking it seriously. drakes one of those rappers who does things for himself, as opposed to doing things for rap
the game needs change and youre the motherfucking cashier?? no youre not. youre a hit w the mainstream but no avant garde
