Wale - “Word Play”
AUDIO By Gotty™ on March 17, 2009 at 10:27 pmFor the majority of last year, I had to argue with The Great Debater about the value of The Mixtape About Nothing. Bar none, I still think it was one of last year’s best releases (if not the best), regardless of it had a SKU number or not. It was significant because as Wale’s mixtape discography has grown @ a calculated pace, he’s gotten better with each outing and The Mixtape… was conceptually brilliant, covering a wealth of topics while maintaining just a thread of relationship with the Seinfield theme.
And now, here we are with a new mixtape (dropping 4.29.09) by which we will judge Wale, this time pairing the dude from the DMV with 9th Wonder. One that he says “is taking it back to the fun days in hip hop when artists worked with each other for the love and not for the checks or politics. It’s an easy listen; no controversy, no dramatic records.” And if it’s as good as TMAN, it should give me more ammo to use against TC until Attention Deficit releases.

is it just me or is this cartoon hella suspect?
“majors misbehaving, I’mma take it digital…”
Spitta FTW!
See’s cover….PAUSE.
The Ambiguously G_y Mixtape?
and maybe…MAYBE the margin has closed just a bit, but LP’s still > mixtapes.
Seems like everything’s “suspect” nowadays. Right down to being in the same elevator with another nigga.
Dope cover.
play me for a steppin stone the I land mine
sunroof flow, so over your head

Wale has been my favourite artist of last year since last year. I am looking forward to his next tape big time. MIxtape about nothing was such a dope surprise to me that I still to this day am banging it.
I mos def will check out any new thing he does. He, young chris, and cudi are killing it.
while i appreciate what the artist was trying to do, the cover does look unintentionally suspect.
off topic:
personally, i cannot get into most mixtapes because of they often times come across as incoherent and inconsistent. it’s like reading an essay full of sentence fragments, usually the tracks are way too short and lack the polish that a good lp would have. not to mention the fact that many times there’s some self important dj who is spitting his brand all over the already too short tracks and the sound quality falls just short of what i would like to hear. simply put, mixtapes tend to feel very disposable and hastily thrown together.
don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of albums that come across the same way but mixtapes just have an amatuer feel to them. the mixtape used to be a way to whet the appetite of the listener for the upcoming album, but with the flood of mixtapes on the ‘nets, i’ll just pass and wait for the lp to drop. luckily it’s easy to hit the delete key or better yet, skip the dl all together.

Wale is definitely one of the top new cats to check for, he always brings that heat. “The Mixtape About Nothing” was one of the best releases last year no doubt.
@know patience: gimme a try.

And that’s why TMAN was a step above other mixtapes & albums.
^ Except “So Far Gone” which is damn near an LP.
i’m open minded, tell me a god mixtape and i will give it a spin. but seriously, how many mixtapes really have that replay factor even after the lp for the featured artist drops? @ trackstar: where do you suggest that i start?
Curren$y went IN.
This cover is gay and this song is gay well thats Hip Hop nowadays.
Look what time it is Wale time to go back to the hotel.
regarding the “suspect” cover, i think they were tryna play it off the Back To The Future cover which has marty mcfly and doc (or whatever his name was) with the same pose, no one “suspected” it back then….lol totally agree with ‘Oh Dear’, two niggas can’t even ride the same elevator these days without niggas thinking it’s “suspect”
Yeah that cover does look homosexually suspect.
@Teef: Good lookin with that Saigon. “Lose Her” is the jam.
Wale is a beast.
two words to describe Wale’s style; effortless flow. The guy does not even seem like he tries but ends up killing a track. TMAN best release of 2008 without a doubt. Still in heavy rotation.
