I generally don’t rattle on about guns because I get the feeling that our corner of the innernuts generally isn’t interested. Generally, you either have a balls-to-the-wall anti-gun beatnik or you have the flipside, a complete gun nut.
I’m neither as I consider myself able to see both sides of this equation. Yes, assault rifles do pose a threat to our society & some state’s gun laws are somewhat lax. Yet, when I read this article, I felt like the author was one of those going off the deep end – adding in doses of sensationalism (referencing Hollywood in comparision to real life issues) while tugging at the emotional strings of readers (Columbine & Virginia Tech references) – in an attempt to use fear as a factor.
The very concept of handling a device that is actually designed for the sole purpose of ending a human life, I find abhorrent. I have no tolerance for people who worship firearms and believe that it somehow enhances them as human beings. I’ve written here before against people who have a bloodlust for killing, and are pompous enough to call it self-defense.
Enh…So, am I to assume that this author is going to turn the other ass cheek to get shot in? Perhaps throw a keyboard at an attacker?
“…People who load up on weapons just because the president is concerned about things other than people’s right to a phallic substitute won’t get much respect from me. My big fear is that the increase in gun sales will likely lead to another Columbine or Virginia Tech. These were needless shootings that occurred because the wrong people had access to deadly firearms — a direct result of the insistence of an irresponsible gun lobby on lax gun laws.”
First off, I don’t agree with this logic, mainly because I have a large penis. Secondly, I am not one who will propose that all rules be damned so that we can live in Sodom & Gomorrah. However, I am one of those who has picked up a few random firearms & accessories due to the impending ban.
However, when you legally deny citizens from being able to obtain assault rifles, the only ones left with them are either criminals or your police force.
I’m not fond of either of those groups.
I’m not one of those people that thinks my “12-gauge is any match for a Bushmaster M17s wielded by a dope dealer…” I don’t spend time with drug dealers. Given the recession, it seems like home invasions are on the rise in my neck of the woods. I’m not particularly alarmed by border-crossing banditos that this author refers to. I’m more concerned with burglars. And it’s for those kickdoor artists that I’d like the option to legally purchase a chopper if I choose to.
A few months ago, I read a bumper sticker that said “guns cause crime like flies cause shit.” My qualms aren’t with ideas of bans (which simply won’t be successful); it’s moreso with the lack of possible alternatives. Instead of trying to take away select firearms, what might be a more logical piece of legislature is to require gun classes or some sort of formal training for anyone wanting to purchase a firearm. Don’t take away the guns, but teach people how to properly use, clean & store them. Make the standards even more rigorous for those wanted to purchase assault rifles. Set a required amount of hours with a class & training @ a driving range, similar to graduated license programs that teens go through in several states.
Everyone knows a well-trained shooter can pick off a convict or cop from 50-100 yards, no matter the firearm they’re using.
Ban On Assault Weapons: A Good Idea For Gun Nuts [Black Voices]

gotty, i was just reading a chapeter 4 in Freakanomics where the authors basically presented the case you made here moreorless about gun laws. It’s the chapter dealing with how legalized abortion helped reduce crime.
it’s a good read if u haven’t read it already…
on another note…i need to get me a firearm…but i’ve hesitated since i’ve never gone to a fire range to learn the fundamentals of bussin one.
…and nope…cocking my boy’s 9mm back in the day towards a soda can didn’t really sit well with me as far as good targeting practice.
I vaguely remember that chapter. I say vaguely b/c didn’t they theorize that by legalizing abortion many weren’t born who would’ve been subject to poverty and such?
yeah, they did. but one of the other issues that they tackle was presenting some data on those that say stronger gun laws was the main reason that crime dropped. in doing so, they basically came to the same conclusion that you did…that the only folks that would be left with guns are the criminals and the officers. plus, they even threw in the fact that the black market for guns is so heavy, that even if they did forbid any more guns to be purchased by folks, that they’d never curtail gun violence cause it’s wayyyyyyyyy too many guns already out on the street.
…the only reason i brought it up is because i literally just finished the chapter yesterday at lunch.
that they’d never curtail gun violence cause it’s wayyyyyyyyy too many guns already out on the street.

I was JUST about to add that thought.
There’s already been a rise in the prices & quantities avail. for high-powered firearms & magazines. I can remember when they first banned high-cap mags. Those shits almost doubled in price…and were still available. Shotguns now, stores can’t keep them on the shelves. If a ban does come, the value of those will skyrocket.
And at the end of the day, all it does is take feasible firearms (not your ak’s and such) out of the hands of regular folks.
I haven’t seen the Daily Funk pop up yet.. Thought I would toss one out myself.

Obey the law.
That is all.
First off, I don’t agree with this logic, mainly because I have a large penis.

Gotty, you’re my ninja but…NO HOMO!!! LOL. Gun control is fucking pointless, people kill people. What’s next? Banning baseball bats? Knives? Staplers? Banning ANYTHING is not an adequate deterrent, people will just find “other” means (*ahem* illegal) to obtain what they want. Take Toronto for example: We have strict firearms legislation but our gun crime is on the rise.
This is only the beginning, the right to take away a person’s property they deem “illegal” for whatever reasons is being set up with these Gun regulations/bans. Soon..its inevitable.
Well said

I feel like I have to protect my family. Can’t bring a knife to a gun fight, can’t bring a pistol to a chopper fight.
Sidenote: The mother of my child is an Expert Marksman. She can hit someone at 300+ yards out. I can’t run that fast, my fat ass will die tired. Needless to say, I’ve never crossed her.
I agree with this article, especially the last paragraph. I think that would be an excellent way to approach reforming gun laws, as opposed to bans.
On a side note, I just wrote about a Starbucks barista in DC who shot himself in the leg like a minimum wage Plaxico Burress earlier today on my site LOL
Gotty, seriously, though. The problem is not in the laws. It ALWAYS starts somewhere else.
I live in the city where the dude shot up the Van Mour. Killed 13 people, then himself, with an assult rifle. My brother robbed the drug store with an assult rifle, AK47, I think. Both of these situations wouldn’t have been prevented with harsher gun laws. (The guys dad and my brother’s friend are in the military). Like he stated with abortion, that TOO can be minized at the home. If parents and teachers (LOL) can reach the kids more at a younger age, and gear them in better directions, get them help (which the mall shooter and my brother needed), lot so these issues can become lessened.
I’m buying an ak before the ban takes effect
Because I know if and when zombies attack, I will be ready.
lmao, that’s when the gun nuts are here, when you see references to the “zombies.”
The way I feel about cracking down on guns is the same concept that people have been saying forever. You make it harder to legally obtain firearms and the only people it will affect are the middle of the road people like gotty and myself. The gun nuts and criminals are still going to get weapons (see marijuana for more info).
Also when the zombies come the plan has always been to back the truck through the wall of wal-mart and load up on whiskey cigarettes and shotguns/rifles.
^ noticed how they’ve shifted the stance on weed? They’re throwing it back to the states so basically, it is (almost) completely legal in Cali.
The only people who go off like the person who wrote that article are people who’ve lived in “the ivory tower”, away from violence their whole lives.
I want to see a study done into how many legally purchased assault rifles are used in crimes, and that in comparison with how many assault rifles are used in crimes period. I’d put a good amount of money on it that very few legally purchased weapons are used.
As for me, I’m 18 and live under my parents roof. They forbid me from getting a gun, so I haven’t even looked into the legality of it. But the second I move out, I’m looking into it.
As for weed, even politicians are openly saying legalize it, and I never thought I’d see that. They really want that tax revenue.
Worst post ever. This actually made me throw up a bit in my mouth.
As a Canadian, the gun laws in the U.S. seem somewhat absurd to me; however a complete 180 change on stance and laws seem even more absurd. Taking guns away from the adoring public is obviously not the best way to tackle this subject; similarly reducing the availability only leads to other avenues re: criminal ventures as a way of procuring such objects. As Flea said above, “Take Toronto for example: We have strict firearms legislation but our gun crime is on the rise.” Maybe a better way to address this issue would be increasing the penalty for gun crimes and creating a gun education program. Another idea may be a course that must be passed in order to buy guns. This could include education on social concerns (keeping them out of the hands of children or maladjusted young adults), as well as marksmanship where your ability to use a weapon well could earn you the ability to own one. I personally would have less of a problem with my neighbour owning a variety of guns as long as his idiot son would not be able to leave the house with one, and may even be comforted in knowing that if the zombies ever attack, dude next door is not going to hit me while aiming for them.

^ & ^^ LMAO.
So how much longer am I sitting on an AR-15 waiting list? lol.
Funny, I’m writing a research paper about gun control as well. Fucked up I live in NJ which has pretty strict gun laws. At least I’m not in D.C.
Ever notice that the anti firearm forces rely on emotion and propaganda (like talking about how many ‘children’ are killed when the vast vast majority of those under 18 killed by firearms are gang bangers and ‘gangstas’. Actual innocent children are more likely to die in swimming pool accidents, car accidents, etc. than from firearms.
Legal concealed carry holders are the most law abiding out there cause they don’t want to jeopardize their ability to carry legally.
The problem with requiring tests to allow people to have firearms is that the tests can be used as a defacto method of preventing people from having firearms, much like the poll tax and poll tests were used in the south to prevent blacks from voting before the Civil Rights acts were passed.
I agree that education is essential, but it needs to be administered in a way that guarantees that it can’t be used to take away our right to keep and bear arms, only ensure that we do so in a safe and intelligent manner.
Stoney
{who believes that every sane, non-felonious adult has the RIGHT (not privilege) to keep and bear arms, doesn’t believe that everyone should do so… if you aren’t trained and prepared to use them, they are more likely to be used to your disadvantage than your advantage (like having them taken away from you and used on you). Besides, it only takes a percentage of concealed carry people in the population to keep the criminals guessing who is and who isn’t carrying and that cuts crime (fact, not emotional propaganda). }
This is the way things should be, get off what we are on now
