True to my dopeboy roots, I’ve started to buy whoorides every other season. Not that I’m doing it to duck the cops (I will) or because I like a cash transaction (I do), it’s more because I prefer to put miles on a beat up ass car that’s already taken it’s dents & dings as opposed to driving my main vehicle. That way, it gets fucked it…so be it. K.I.M. A dude backed into my last one, causing a small bit of damage. I ended up settling with his insurance company for more money than I actually paid for the motherfucker lol. I took that cash, sold the damaged goods & upgraded to my current hunk of metal junk.
Of which, it has a 12 disc changer in the trunk.
In the main whip, the iPod is installed. No problems. My whole mp3 catalog chillin’, a finger-touch away. But when you’re working with a finite number of music options before having to going back into the trunk & swap discs, you get real choosey with what CDs you put in. Couple that with the fact that this CD changer doesn’t take to kindly to burned CDs, a move had to be made.
So with that in mind the other day, I slid to my local Best Buy to procure a few new discs to go along with said vehicle, a nifty little two seater with a decent factory system that deserves mellow sounds as I zoom zoom zoom around town. “Coupe music” if you want to call it that.
My purchases?
I’ve got enough rap staples in my CD collection – my Boosie’s, Nas’s, Killer Mike & Jay’s – and that’s enough for me alone. But it’s a two-seater. It’s gonna be me and either my lady or my daughter riding shotgun on most occasions. We need balance. Music that I can tolerate & we both can equally enjoy.
Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite — John Legend’s first disc would be a solid choice for a male R&B album but I get somewhat tired of hearing his almost mechanical singing, almost too technical. I’ve got a Barry White’s Greatest Hits covering the low end; Max will take care of the higher end of the spectrum. It’s not too heavy on sexual innuendo so that me & the kid experience discomfort, but just sensual enough for me & the lady. Balance yo.
Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me — You know how Jay always cosigns Coldplay and you’re thinking “Does he really listen to this shit or is he just trying to front?” There are two White female singers whose music I will always love & play with no shame: Alanis & Norah. Sure, Come Away… was diluted by being worn down by every Starbucks, H&M & Gap establishment. But now that those places have moved on to the next thing, it was time for me to bring Norah back into the listening rotation. Somewhere in this house, I think I’ve already got a copy of the album, but I don’t mind purchasing certain CDs more than once. This fits the criteria.
Common’s Be — I still rank this second only to Resurrection. Fight me.
I also wanted to cop The Recession. In fact, I did. Got to the ride, ripped off the plastic…and noticed that it was a “slot music” version. Returned with the quickness.

Resurrection‘s like in 5th place but we already been there…
5th? BE 2nd? I know Gotty is clean living, but there has to be something in the water in Tennessee, that shit makes no sense.
My ranking goes : 1) Resurrection 2) One Day It’ll All Make Sense 3) Like Water For Chocolate 4) Electric Circus 5) BE 6) Can I Borrow A Dollar 43929290201) UMC
also left off the list #24832 – Finding FOrever
El Rosado is about right.
Fuck Balance. If you don’t like it, feets was mades fo’ walkin’.
If you have Resurrection on tape, there’s no reason to flip to Side B.
I feel you, Gotty. I got a 2 seater too. Don’t use the changer, though.
Can someone re-up that Nora Jones. Dead already.
LMAO @ the analyzing of the male R&B singers.
what’s a “slot music” version of an album? I’m lost. (yeh yeh ,big surprise)
UMC >
Wait…we’re not talking about best albums to throw at someone who cuts you off in traffic? oh…
Norah Jones, Maxwell, and Common?? Hmmm
Either Gotty is trying to bag a a sexay neo soul librarian or that fool is in LOVE!!! lol
Not really understanding this slot music thing…
“slot music” = preloaded memory cards (microSD I think)
Resurrection > than all other Common albums. Might be one of my top 10 all time. Definitely top 20
Nevermind… Why didnt u just say SanDisk?
Whoops to slow on the refresh…
I’ve already been a part of this discussion hundreds of times. These are my personal preferences based on which one I find myself listening to more. Not based on ranking them according to some far-thought criteria.
———————————————————————–
My criteria isn’t some far-thought shit, just personal preferences as well. I can’t see how BE is 2nd but then again I can’t see why anyone would want to hit “beefy” when you could holla at Kim or Khloe but apparently she’s smashed on the regular lol.
Ninjaz still have CD changers??? Haven’t seen one in a while, although I must say that sometimes it beats scrolling around for tunes on an mp3 player routed through the car deck. One of my homies has a cool stereo in his whip that comes with its own external/removable hard-drive.
ps: One day while sitting traffic, I looked over at the car to my left and noticed that the driver had a little boombox on the passenger seat!!! I laughed my ass off, but I kind of felt sorry for the dude. It must suck not having an adequate sound system, I can’t hit the road with no tunes.
@ Flea: That ain’t shit man, my guy had his car radio stolen a couple years ago and didn’t have bread for a new one, so he would roll around with his laptop in the passenger seat playing music off his computer, LMAO.
@ Rosado: Hey man, you leave my Beefy out of this!!! LOL. All this talk about Common and not one mention of “Finding Forever”??? I liked it better than “Be” and still bump it; I still can’t get over that stupid live version of “The Food” used on the “Be” album.
@ Rosado: LMFAO!!! At least the laptop doesn’t skip!!!
I don’t really see the appeal of Resurrection? While its a good album, it doesn’t hold my attention like Be does.

gotty, good looks on that big city philadelphia mixtape…this video is jokes
Resurrection = #1 bar none.
I’ve seen countless people driving w/headphones on lol.
CD changer ain’t that bad. It gives me a reason to still go buy CDs periodically. And in some cases, it sounds better. I would prolly upgrade the sound system, but then again I’m liable to sell the motherfuckin car before I even have a chance to do all that.
what is this “cd changer” thing everyone keeps referencing?
that B e was just in rotation in the whip on Sunday. great album that plays well from front to back. F i n d i n g F o r e v e r was good too but not the same vibe. The productions was really the ribbon that helped to tie the B e album together for me.

It’s what cavemen used for listening to music, while rollin their wheel around the fire… good times man…
RMF…
F all dat. The Lac has an iPod hook up. Chuuch.
Give me the intro/title song to Be over a large chunk of his catalog & I’m a happy camper.

No love for No I.D.?
@ Gotty: That’s it, I’m starting my own blog called “the non-smoking section.” Hater Chris will be a featured writer lol.
@ David D: You’re banned from Q4…BANNED I TELL YOU
****walks out bumping resurrection****
Let me be the one to say outright that I would smash all three of the K-Dash sisters, Beefy included.
Bend her big ass over, she’s done for. As a matter of fact, Beefy>Scary. Real talk.
Second, for me, Be was a great album. Outstanding, even. But my favorite, and the one I keep going back to, especially after listening to Be is Like Water For Chocolate.
Finally, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen VA dudes rocking their HOUSE speakers in the back seat. 2 floor model Bose speakers in the back of a Toyota Corolla. SMH.
Ever noticed how ranking albums by Common & Outkast can cause the biggest discussion? Any other catalogs compare?
^^ Jigga.
I’ve seen countless people driving w/headphones on lol.
ROFL!
The Believer
I think it’s fairly easy to rank Jigga’s albums. RD and Blueprint are easily numbers 1 and 2 with Life and Times Vol 1 and Hard Knock right behind. The others I don’t even bother listening too.

LOL. And you think the majority agree with that? I know for a fact there are people here that will call you insane for leaving AG. And I’d have to make an argument for Black Album over Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
^^^
U gotta be kidding me. Vol. 1 is on the bottom half of the pile and
American Gangster = The Blueprint
Wait, TC.
Volume 1, bottom of the pile?
I must disagree, sir. Take off City Is Mine, Sunshine, and I Know What Girls Like, and Vol. 1 is easily top 10 of Jay’s….
Wait, did I just say top ten?
The Black Album, Vol. 3 are both better. It’s probably got Kingdom Come by a smidget
I cannot be the only one bangin UMC- perfect work out album- atleast once a wk atleast for me and BE will always hold the #1 spot. (The intro alone-unmatched)
Oh G priceless with the Cd changer pic- I swear I had the same one and two12′s in my trunk, granted it was about 7yrs ago, and I removed all of it before I sold that buick-lol memories
In order, my Jay-Z picks.
1. The Blueprint
2. American Gangster (and it only lost by a hair)
3. Reasonable Doubt
4. The Black Album
5. In My Lifetime Vol. 3
6. Kingdom Come
7. In My Lifetime Vol. 2
8. The Blueprint 2
9. In My Lifetime Vol. 1
10. The Dynasty
TC.. I feel you… Guess that shows how much I listen to Jigga.. I haven’t checked for a J album or song for some time now…
Vol. 1 is near the bottom & the bottom half of the album is dope. But the bad songs are really that bad.
Give me the intro/title song to Be over a large chunk of his catalog & I’m a happy camper.
———————————
*high five*
My bad folks i didn’t mean to raise your hairs on the J comments..
R. Kelly, anyone?
E. Brock, it’s more like this my dude:
1. RD
2. BP
3. TBA
4. BP2
5-9. V1, V2, V3, KC, AG (order changes depending what kind of mood I’m in)
10. Dynasty
How does anyone put AG top-5, I got tired of Hov by Kingdom Come, really he ain’t saying shit on the mic anymore that I haven’t heard from him about (insert name of product here). And I definitely wasn’t trying to hear him “bring it back” with AG because this mufugga is 10-12 years removed from the dope game so I ain’t trying to hear him talk about some old shit he doesn’t do anymore nor am I trying to hear him on the new shit spitting about his icon status. He shoulda just left after Black Album, that was the Jordan over Russel to end his career, right now he’s on that Jordan in a Wizards jersey shit and it’s weak.
Blueprint
RD
Black Album
V.2
V.1
@ DS
1st-12 play
BBW1
R.Kelly
Double Up
Chocolate Factory/Loveland
Happy People
BBW2
TP-2
TP-3
Then whatever that shit was he put out after trial
I prob missed some but yeah I got them Ipod and CD( 2 of each-1 for mama)
And FTR KingdomCome sucked major ass!!!- just my 2cents
American Gangster is a classic.
So, let me get this right…
Not for lyrical content, nor for beat selection, just because you are tired of Jay, means that AG should be at the bottom of the list?
Let’s be serious for a moment, AG was a VERY well put together album. And Rosado, I can dig what you’re saying, but be real. You know you listen to AG every now and again. LOL
And Heff, BP2 had TOO much filler to be that high. Sorry. If he would’ve dropped like maybe 10 songs and put it out on a single disc… what’s that? He did that with BP 2.1? But he picked the wrong songs? Oh. My bad.
How does anyone put AG top-5
==================================
????
Part of American Gangster’s allure comes from actually watching the movie and hearing how it correlates with the music. Pretty. Damn. Impressive.
Hov may not be saying anything new on AG, but he found a way to make it sound fresh & invigorated. Which is the next best thing
10. Dynasty
====================
Heff is so far off it ain’t funny.
@ E Brock: I haven’t listened to AG in over a year according to my iTunes library. I’m sure tracks play off it from time to time when I’m not paying attention, but you know how it tells you what you’ve actually selected? Yeah, well I haven’t selected to listen to an AG cut in over a year. I’m just not feeling, lyrically yea it was straight, it was Hov, it was what we came to expect, and the beats will always be dope, but it’s not like writing as the character of Frank Lucas to match it up with the movie is a stretch for Hov….he’s been spitting about the Lucas Lifestyle as it was. If he wanted to impress me, he woulda done the same concept with Juno…LMAO j/k, but you get my point.
@ TC: Impressive, somewhat, again like I said to E Brock, it’s not as if doing this Lucas persona was a stretch for Jay though.
@MZ: Ehhh, again, just kinda typical Hov to me, nothing spectacular. Different strokes for different folks.
I still say he shoulda put the mic away after Black Album.
Jigga Discography IMO
1. Reasonable Doubt
^ Mostly because of the fact that I play this album the most.
2. American Gangster (and it only lost by a hair) & The Blueprint [Tie]
^ Both were dropped at the perfect time in his career too.
4. The Black Album
5. Vol. 2, Hard Knock Life
6. Vol. 3: Life and Times of S. Carter
7. The Blueprint 2
^ Realistically… some of the songs could’ve been left out. If this
would’ve been a single disc, it would’ve been dope as hell.
8. In My Lifetime, Vol. 1
9. Kingdom Come
^ Enhhhh… Although…. “Beach Chair” should’ve been the opening
track to the Miami Vice film IMO.
10. The Dynasty: Roc La Familia 2000
^ This should’ve been a Roc album, and NOT a Jay-Z album
like it was originally planned to be. After a few smoldering hot
tracks, it seems like the rest was rushed and thrown together.

^ This should’ve been a Roc album, and NOT a Jay-Z album
like it was originally planned to be. After a few smoldering hot

================================
Y’all are bugging. That album is not his worst effort. No way. Ya’ll need to listen to that one again.
Amp’s right. I wouldn’t crown The Dynasty 5 Cigs but it’s damn near touching it. Matter fact, it got 4.5 Mics in The Source back when “it meant something…” Right?
And Common’s Resurrection got 3.5 Mics back when it really “meant something…” Well?
But Hov’s catalog is so good, The Dynasty falls like to #4 when it will easily be the crowning achievement of many of MC’s career. Lyrical excellence indeed.
- B. Sig’s emotion on “Where Have You Been”
-”You, Him, Me, Her”
-The creativity of “1-900-Hustler”
-”Soon You’ll Understand” birthed “Song Cry.” Shit was deep. “Squeeze 1st” was pure heat. “Guilty Until Proven Innocent” doubled as party track and a clarification record.
AND
The “Intro” is probably the best “Intro” ever.
I won’t say that The Dynasty is bad at all I just rank it there in order of spins the disc gets. Not to say that I don’t scroll by a few of the tracks at random in my iPod; I just don’t play the album all the way through.
^ Not to mention, this is the best you’ll ever hear Memphis Bleek. Ever.
The only song on the album that doesn’t feature Hov is “Holla” & that joint is a heatrock.
The Dynasty > Kingdom Come/Vol.1/Vol. 2/Vol. 3/BP2
Vol. 2 = The Dynasty
They’re pretty evenly matched.
Vol. 2 = The Dynasty
They’re pretty evenly matched.
=============================
Maybe, but IMO, Vol. 2 seemed like it was more concerned with success. The Dynasty (with the exception of the 1st single) just comes off less calculated. But you’re right. They’re kinda on the same level.
Gotty I agree on Be
as for the Disc Changer I a bakers dozen with the 12 changer and 1 deck slot
Keep It Chalk
10 Mainstays
2 for R&B spots for wifey
1 Wildcard for the deck spot
Here ya go
1. Ready to Die
2. Reasonable Doubt
3. Illmatic
4. ATLiens
5. Straight Outta Compton
6. Midnight Marauders
7. Blueprint
8. Cuban Links
9. Be
10. Trap Muzik
11. Urban Hang Suite
12. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Wildcard
13. Murs 3:16 9th Edition
Really, I think that the Dynasty album was good, but it wasn’t a Jay album. Not to say it wasn’t some heat up there… But I couldn’t rank it any higher than a true Jay album.
Really, I think that the Dynasty album was good, but it wasn’t a Jay album.
================================
Why not? Cause of the guest appearences?
There’s no question who’s album this is. Even on tracks with Bleek & Beans, Hov owns the room.
dude bought a norah jones CD
Word to my ninja El Rosado, it’s time for Jay to hang up the mic. After this album comes out (which Kanye has been so effusive about) he should call it a career and leave on a high note. Y’all already know my stance in regard to Jay, so I’m going to cause more debate:
Nas >>> Jay
Illmatic >>> Reasonable Doubt
Nas ain’t lost a step lyrically, Jay has to an extent.
Illmatic owns a lot of albums.
But since you’re sparking debate…
Ready To Die>Illmatic
And hell, while you’re at it…
OB4CL>Illmatic
Say something.
@Amp
Yeah, that may be true.
Maybe I just didn’t like the album sonically, you know? Like, some parts of it didn’t mesh well with me and my ears.
The biggest thing out of all of this is, we’re comparing the man’s albums to HIMSELF, not to other albums.
He’s fighting his own catalog, his own feelings at the time those rhymes were written. So, at any rate, whether he should hang it up or not, he’s had a damn good career. And I think that speaks for itself more than anything.
And another thing, why is it that we want our hip-hop stars to retire? Rock bands don’t go through this. Al Green just dropped an album last year. What, are we saying that after a certain amount of time, they should just give it up? Hip-hop has those sports analogies, but really, this isn’t football where you play for 10 years and that’s it. I mean, as long as your mind is focused and sharp, I think you could do this for longer than 5-6 albums.
@E.Brock
Illmatic>than every other hip hop album EVER!
Illmatic>>>>>Ready To Die>any other Nas album
also
OB4CL>Ready To Die

Real rap.
And Common’s Resurrection got 3.5 Mics back when it really “meant something…” Well?
======================================================
Didn’t Cuban Linx only get 4 mics back when it meant something? I may be wrong.
My boy had the same exact CD player in his car, lol.. He had;
Jay-Z- Reasonable Doubt & In My Lifetime Vol. 1
Beanie Sigel – The Reason & The B. Coming
Lil Wayne – Tha Carter II & The Drought is Over 4
And I think some dipset shit.. The CD player and his whole album collection was lost tho, shit sucks. lol
@TC: I’m with you on the greatness of Dynasty but 1-900-Hustler’s the opposite of original. They ripped that off of the “Dial-a-Crook” (feat the Geto Boys) track off the Convict’s album back in the day.
