“Show You How…”
Everything Else By Gotty™ on March 5, 2009 at 11:48 pmBy the time I posted the CD changer piece, I had already moved on to a more finite problem, one that had already begun to take place in the comments.
Ranking Jay’s discography, The Blueprint 2 is top ranking by my standards (only after barely nipping The Black Album in a close race). The only problem for me is which disc: Disc One or Disc Two?
Initially, I started to run with the first disc because it holds my favorite song off the whole album, “I Did It My Way” (“Hoviiii, bab-byyy…Momma’s youngest and strongest, survived summers like saunas, Mastered the corner like Deion in his uniform”). But then, I’d be left to suffer through such trite offerings as “All Around The World” and “F_ck All Nite.”
If I roll with disc two alone, I get all the bangers. The slept on Heavy D. creation, “Guns & Roses,” which Jay thoroughly slays (The crafty “And who knew dude would play ball for the NBA, Would make a mistake at the Who Knew Estate…” line gets me every time). The amplified “U Don’t Know (Remix).” “Show You How.” But then I’ll have to sit through the borefest that is the lazy-sounding “Ballad Of The Fallen Soldier” and shit like “Nigga Please,” where Jay serves what sounds like a throwaway Pharrell beat & hook assist.
That’s the problem. First & foremost, we all know most double discs are shabby efforts that could’ve been easily consolidated into one. The only two albums where I have this problem are BP2 & Pac’s All Eyez…. Pretty much every other “double-disc” effort* I’ve encountered is weak enough where they can’t even get into this equation (or I forgot’em anyways). All Eyez… is actually easy; disc two all day. Disc one only when I feel like it. Most of the heat there is concentrated to second disc.
With Jay’s joint, it’s spread between the two, making the choice hard when I only got one slot left.
* Biggie? Disc two of L.A.D.

Yeaaaaah, I’m going to have to go ahead and stop right there.
“Forever”>Any Double Disc
Wow.
I feel you, though. Like I said in a earlier post, BP2 should’ve been one CD and that 2.1 garbage picked most of the wrong songs.
Waaait waaait waaiiit a minute.
the curse disc was the shit on blueprint 2
* Still waiting on “The Watcher” video where they play cee-lo during Rakim’s verse, dominos for Dre’s, & in AC for Jay’s verse *
I really couldn’t decide between the two though, there’s just enough on each to warrant inclusion. I’d probably have to just pull over and swith discs at some point.

The Top top? Tippy top?
That’s rarified air reserved for Reasonable Doubt.
Are you serious? That was his 2nd to worst album. IMHO:
The Blueprint
Reasonable Doubt
American Gangster
Vol 3
Black Album
Vol 2
Vol 1
Blueprint 2.0
Kingdome Come
Ranking Jay’s discography is easy….. RD is and will always be first. For me Vol. 1 is his next best with BP, Roc La, Vol. 3, black album. But the thing is I’ll change my order ifbyou ask me a day later. Won’t change top two tho.
^^^
Vol. 1????????????????
The Blueprint, American Gangster, The Black Album, Vol. 2, The Dynasty, >>>> Vol. 1
Easy.
Roc La Familia aint no posse cut… that’s a compilation, dog… and even if it features a young kanye and dj clue track… it’s not considered an album
oh shit we’re about to virtually scrap
Roc La Familia aint no posse cut… that’s a compilation… it’s not considered an album
==============================
Compilations don’t go platinum. That was a Jay-Z album
I believe the booklet, case and cover says JAY-Z – The Dynasty (Roc La Familia 2000-2004)
Not Jay-Z Presents…Jay-Z & Co. JAY-Z. It’s very much a solo album. The guest appearances were the theme of the album. It was intentionally like that. So I guess Vol.2 isn’t a Jay-Z solo either???
reasonable doubt is #1
then blueprint
black album
vol 2
american gangster
the rest…..
jay has really been doing his thing forever, no1 is fuckin with his discography
Damn, BP2 along with Kingdom Come are the only Jay-Z albums I don’t have in heavy rotation. This ranking could change anytime really but
Reasonable Doubt
American Gangster
Blueprint
Vol. 1
The Dynasty
Black Album
Vol. 2 / Vol. 3 (can’t really split these two)
Blueprint 2
Kingdom Come
IMO the Library Of A Legend discs are almost as good as any of those anyway, call me Stan
reasonable doubt and blueprint 1 are CLASSICS
The Blueprint, American Gangster, The Black Album, Vol. 2, The Dynasty?????
“Intro/A Million And One questions/Rhyme No More”, “Lucky Me”, “Where I’m From”, “You Must Love Me” body’s anything on those albums above fam. Take away from that album “Sunshine” and “Know what Girls Like” and you have an almost classic.
What ruins this album for people is the video for “Sunshine” and Jay and Dame looking like 97’s Bad Boy Clones.
That was his worst album I never listened to it twice it was horrible.
* BIGGIE? DISC TWO OF L.A.D.

Yessir!!!
“The World Is Filled With Pimps and Hoesssss…I’m Just Talkin’ ‘Bout Those I Know!”
Beat is silky
I got a solution for you Sir G………..
Just burn a disc with all the tracks you like from both discs. Simple. Problem solved.
Buy a fuckin ipod and be done with it. Playlists mufuckas
@ Its Me
Watup Chris!
You all must be rich, if you can afford CD changers, I’m rocking a cassette stereo system in my ride, plus it’s got Dolby B sound reduction, ehem.
But anyway, as for the top spot, I’ll take The Blueprint over Reasonable Doubt.
Hey! I happen to like “F*ck All Nite,” BUDDY!
>:(
stupid blogs with their stupid opinions on stuff…not liking things that I like…nyah nyah nyyyyaaahhh, ny-it nas trny-ite…hmph!
My favorite Jigga album is “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1″
I mean… it is a personal opinion, right?
Following that would be “The Blueprint.”
But Blueprint is a better album than Vol. 1… I just rank it second based upon favorites.
“All Eyez… is actually easy; disc two all day. Disc one only when I feel like it. Most of the heat there is concentrated to second disc.”
Vice Versa for me.
man hov is the fuckin best. if this is his worst than that says A LOT about that mans discography. Respect his fresh. Respect who he is and what he’s done. respect
I think if you chop off some of the fat from BP2, you can pull together a classic album
But anyway, as for the top spot, I’ll take The Blueprint over Reasonable Doubt.
—————————————–
goddamn right.
blue print two is top five material though just not sure where.
didnt like hard knock life that much.
..no ones really talking about vol 3 that much.
thats a summatime album
summa da time i like it
summa da time i dont.
all eyes on me disk one > disk two
Blueprint 2 and Kingdom Come have to be on the bottom half of people’s rankings….i mean fine they got some hot tracks but they can’t compare as a LP to all of Jay’s other discs
BP2 may not be my favorite Jay album, but statistically, it is the one i play second to most in the whip(Vol.1 ftw).
Vol.3 also gets a lot of whip burn as well.
I think Vol. 3 is the worst Jay album. I haven’t listened to it in at least 3 years. Intro/Outro are tight. Big Pimpin is bananas but that about it.
I think Vol. 3 is the worst Jay album. I haven’t listened to it in at least 3 years. Intro/Outro are tight. Big Pimpin is bananas but that about it. The song wit Sigel is sick too.
Wow, I thought BP2 was terrible. Never listened to it after the first week. But I also thought BP was wildly overrated itself– WAY too inconsistent for classic album status. My top 3 Jay albums are: Reasonable Doubt; Black Album; La Familia (wildly underrated– the most slept-on album from a major artist in the past 10 years maybe).
And the second disc of Biggy’s double-disc? I strongly disagree. “What’s Beef”, “Somebody’s Gotta Die” and “Today’s Agenda” are probably three of Biggy’s greatest tracks ever. The Lox track is hot too, Hypnotize gets hate because of the video and the hook, and Love the Dough, Story and Kick in the Door are great tracks too. Disc 1 for me every time!
I’m probably biased by my age though– I’ve noticed that most people 30 and over seem to think Reasonable Doubt is the best hand’s down, while people a few years younger are willing to put Blueprint and sometimes even the Black Album higher. Not sure if it’s a sentimental thing or just different musical sensibilities for different generations… or maybe I’m just completely off.
I wish I would’ve caught this conversation last night… its too early to be debating this again… I’ll leave it to the “Internet Powers that Be”.
Go back through the comments of the CD Changer post, and you’ll see my stance.
@DH: the Internet Powers that Be say you’re dead wrong about Dynasty, lol.
AG for the win!!
BP2? Seriously? How can you pick an his one album with soooo much filler. And I do agree that BP 2.1 was grade A barbecue shit on a stick. Reasonable Doubt will always be near and dear to my heart. Mr. Carter has put forth solid efforts with only three no-shit classics: RD, BP, the Black Album.
Reasonable Doubt
Black Album
The Blueprint
Vol. 3
Vol. 2
The Dynasty, Roc La Familia
Vol. 1
…and the rest.
Am I the only one who thought Vol. 3 was trash?
reasonable doubt
blueprint
black album
dynasty
vol 3
american gangster
blueprint 2
vol 1
kingdom come
vol 2
There’s a certain individual who always tries to argue opinions w/me & he’ll tell you I generally ignore other people’s opinions vs. my own lol.
I go w/which one I like to listen to most. No artistic merits, no “he changed the game with this album,” he did this, he did that. No criteria, not applying any ratings or evaluations.
You ask me which I enjoy to listen to the most, it’s b/w this joint & Black Album. It’s a solid match b/w quality beats & some time-capsule lyrics, as the whole album still sounds “fresh” to me.
But for the record, RD is in the changer as well.
Gotty I respect you a lot but on this one I’d have to say ur dead wrong…
Now I will say this cd wasn’t the “trash” everyone said it was…
Hell The Watcher on disc one silently destroyed Ja Rule’s career… but as for this being his best work far from it… I think he tried to do too much in a short amount of time. Hov had some great tracks but those great tracks got overshadowed by the lame ones (see also Poppin Tags). I think he was ambitious and fell short… but that made him come back that much stronger so all was not lost.
^ nah, i see what you’re saying but i happen to think he did pretty well lyrically on here. it’s just overshadowed by some of the “pop rap,” the songs that made it to radio/video (whether it was on purpose or not).
“From Compton To The Brooklyn Zoo
I’m Classic Like Detox And Blueprint 2″
- The Game
RD
Blueprint 1
Dynasty
AG
Vol 2
The rest
forgot the Black
before Vol 2
@ _1979– I wouldn’t say Vol3 was trash (like I called BP2), but I thought it was definitely one of Jay’s weaker efforts. Several of Jay’s albums are amongst the top 20-30 of the past 10 years. Vol3 probably doesn’t crack the top 100. I was startled to see that several people here put it over Vol2.

i wholeheartedly agree; subpar effort from an excellent artist at the pinnacle of the “bling” era. “come & get me” is the one track that stands out to me. after that … if someone brings up vol. 3, i immediately think of “s. carter” feat. amil. case closed.
I’m a Pac fan and All Eyez On Me is my #1 double…but how can you leave out Life After Death?
I’ma show you how to do this son, put a little in the baggy, a little in the purse.
Alright if I had to rank God’s albums from best to worst it would go like so:
Reasonable Doubt
The Blueprint
The Black Album
Vol.1 (How people are trying to say any of the other volumes are better than 1 makes absolutely no sense)
American Gangster
Vol.3
Dynasty
Vol. 2
Blueprint 2
Kingdom Come (I don’t think Kingdom Come is even that bad of an album and that just shows how solid of a discography God has.)
bp2 as numero uno?
naw son. too much filler.
I’d rather have the original version of “The Watcher 2″ when it was just Dre and Rakim with Hittman and Truth Hurts as mentioned in The Source and Hittman mentioned one time in an interview. Supposedly this was the first song Ra record with Dre.
This would be easy breezy, for me. Disc 2. “U Don’t Know (Remix)” is my favorite track off the entire album. The only track I’d really miss off the first disc would be “A Dream”.
As far as Jay’s albums go the only one that didn’t get much air play was Kingdom Come. The only track that I’d still listen to would be “Lost One”. Maybe “Show Me What You Got”, if I’m drunk enough lol. All his the other albums stayed in heavy rotation for a couple weeks/months after they initially dropped.
RMF…
Reasonable Doubt – I can play it from top to (almost) bottom the rest require me to keep the remote in my hand.
I don’t really rate the Blueprint, it’s like a Vol.3 for me, what I mean by that is I can only listen to 2-4 tracks off those albums.
I understand the hype behind this album because of the Takeover but that was ONE song and (as a Jay supporter) even that imo was devoured by Ether.
V2 is cool (Streets is Watching), but V3 filler.
Dynasty cool, although You, Me, Him & Her (which I love) would have been a betta track w/o Amil… I prefer the live version of that track :o), BA, AG what I’ve come to expect of the man..
