It’s always seemed to me that Obie Trice’s skills on the microphone have always been overshadowed by his affiliation with the game’s favorite white boy. Not to say that it wasn’t warranted, but it is much easier to shine when next to a light bulb rather than the sun.

Well, as we all know, Mr. Trice was released from his contract with Shady records last year. One would think this would lead to a few diss records aimed towards his former boss every week or something to that effect. Instead the Detroit native decided to stay on his grind as if nothing happened. Two songs that I have personally enjoyed since his departure from the label are “You Burn” and “Can’t 4ever.”

You Burn” is proof positive that Obie can pen a radio-ready single without the help of an R&B hook or a high profile label mate. The song is a bonafide stripper anthem with Obie rapping about his favorite exotic dancer on top of a high pitched, rock vocal sample and some strategically placed guitar riffs.

On “Can’t 4ever,” a hungry sounding Trice spits from the perspective of a young hustler trying to see his way through the drug game. It chronicles the rise and fall of his character over a guitar loop reminiscent of a 1970’s Aerosmith record and some smooth bass that rest right underneath his vocals. The chorus consists of a soulful sample warning the hustler of the inevitable fate that comes with running the streets.
