Words by Ms. Krish

For all those that doubted that Cali Iz still Active, Nipsey Hussle is hittin’ the scene with some of that good ole gangsta rap for the soul. While most of the younger generation was barely in the womb when N.W.A. diverted Hip-Hop from Pro-Black idealism forevermore, Hussle revisits that flatland music that transfixed an audience mostly dominated by the East. And unlike The Game, who still crowns himself the Lazarus of the West, Hussle’s street cred seems to be tried and true – at least until the next MC wants beef.

The biggest draw to his music is providing the audience with a formula we can expect from L.A. rappers: the Snoop braids, white tees and Chucks, and those familiar synthesizers we remember from The Chronic. It’s been done, yes, but why fix something that ain’t broke? So while its easier to be accustomed to a sound that we know well, Hussle integrates catchy hooks and a lyrical dexterity that can only be attributed to listening to rap from outside of the region.

Cali’s just his starting block. Bullets Ain’t Got No Name Vol. 3 will be the gun to start the race.
