When MF DOOM (“All Caps when you spell the man’s name” – Madvillainy) umm…dropped his album last week, I may have been the only member of the Crew that was jumping for joy.
There were comments about his “gibberish” and how difficult his albums are to listen to. At one point, a few people co-signed that Asher Roth was more enjoyable to Mr. Dumile. Instead of getting my Flea on and cursing you fools out, I decided to take a more rational approach.
DOOM isn’t gibberish. Not even close. While his lines, when compiled, don’t result in a coherent song with one theme, but how much of Hip-Hop music does? And no, “bitches, hoes and dollars” don’t add up to a coherent theme. The fact is, much like Ghost’s Supreme Clientele, the depth is more so in the depth that can be unpacked from each individual line, since each is full of irony, comedy and ill rhyme scheme.
“Once sold an inbred skinhead a nigga joke
Plus a brand new chrome smoker with the trigger broke
I thought I told him firing pins were separate
He’ll find out later when he tries to go and rep it.”
That’s brilliance packed into a couple of lines. DOOM looks like the lowest of low assholes and redeems himself by duping the skinhead. It’s a whole story of irony and twisted humor in four bars. You don’t need a whole 16 for that — just a small pocket of intrigue and storytelling.
This causes the listener/reader to have to break conventions about the art form. By just using this non-conventional flow and subject matter, is as much a commentary on the trite 16 bars and hook formula that brings about cookie cutter music as DOOM’s non-traditional subject matter
And anyone that believes DOOM is incapable of creating a coherent and compelling story needs to check out his Viktor Vaughn Vaudeville Villain album. He has whole songs dedicated to time traveling crimes and robbing people with a bullet-less gun among other things.
Now, go back and re-listen. I won’t judge you for changing your mind.

This DOOM album was for his core. Fans demanded it. I’m buying it Tuesday.
DOOM is BACK regardless of what’s happened…
I’ve got a couple gigs worth of DOOM’s stuff.. Can’t say I completely follow him 100% of the time, but there are those couplets, like the one quoted above, that are undeniably genius.
“Saliva” is my joint on Vaudeville Villan too lol.
I agree with this post entirely. Born Like This isn’t as good as Mm…Food, but it’s still better than a lot of shit out there right now.

lol
great.
so now I gotta go in my iTunes & iPod library and edit “MF Doom” to “MF DOOM”
“Saliva” is my joint
^ almost, but not quite, pause-worthy…lol
*still waiting on DoomStarks*
”I may have been the only member of the Crew that was jumping for joy”
Are you serious??
Maybe the ”crew” just don’t have a lot of taste…
MF Doom > Asher Roth.
We kidding here?
*still waiting on DoomStarks*

cosign…but im not gonna front…i have the whole DOOM discography and the only CDs i can really knock and get into is his project with Danger Mouse & MMM…Food…the rest are used as coasters & frisbees
great writeup son. i been a big DOOM fan for years. The Viktor Vaughn Vaudville Villian album was crazy ill with the story lines. There was one cut where he was talkin bout bein the villian in his school where he went with a young peter parker. G.M.C was the dopest cut on there tho. with funny lines like this
Party people know the name, Vik with a “k”
if its all the same, if it ain’t dont bother
told the little monster, “No I ain’t yo’ father
it’s Uncle Viktor, shut the lights I’m gettin’ dizzy
and close the door, can you see ya momma busy?”
What a scoundrel!
gassed up the town fool to go rob the crown jewel
he’s like a lego megalomaniac
who’s into electronic and techno, a real brainiac
smack-dab in the hip hop gold rush
V, rather the old stuff
preferably the Cold Crush
“While his lines, when compiled, don’t result in a coherent song with one theme, but how much of Hip-Hop music does?”
What’s funny is that hiphop heads will take mushy shits on Lil Wayne for the same thing, but when Doom does it, its suddenly OK.
anyone got a link for the new DOOM?
Big fan of Dangerdoom and MM Food… but can’t get into him like others.
I ain’t gonna lie man, I cried during ‘Things We Lost During The Fire’ and I dreaded the worse when Harper locked herself inside of her bedroom, after Jerry said he was going into rehab. *Sniffle, Sniffle*.
As for MF DOOM, dude is the Jill Scott of rap musak. For me it goes back to 2001, when I was having a CD swapsies session with a friend of mine. Dude, made MF Doom sound like the best thing since sliced bread, he had the gaul to lend me Operation Doomsday and in return he took a Mic Geronimo, plus two Big Daddy Kane CDs off my rack.
I told him this better be some mind blowing shit, since he is borrowing three CDs in exchange for one. He says chill man, this is better than heroin!
Anyway, I finally get around to playing that MF DOOM cd on my technics, and damn did that shit stink!
It was the biggest let down, since The Karate Kid Part 3.
I’ll give him a pass for Mr Hood, but at least it has some listenable skits on it, and Peach Fuzz, is a solid track.
But that’s it, yeah I said it, MF DOOM, you are woeful, you couldn’t even give that ish away on Megaupload, for rilla.
vaudeville villain, i always tell cats, best lyrical album ever if you’re talking straight quality and quantity. and they laugh at me. but the fools never even heard it, so i have the last laugh.
DOOM does what a lot of people completely forgot about in the game…word play, multi-syllable rhymes, humorous anecdotes. you can tell he loves language in general, and the peculiarities of it, double meanings and whatever. when he busts out a 4-syllable-rhyme line like
“border-line schizo / sorta fine tits though / pour the wine, whore to grind / quarter-to-nine…lets go”
its like…game over.
Personally I think dudes a genius and I understand why people go to war on his behalf but as his songs go he’s Hit o Miss with Doom for me. mostly miss
this comparison to Asher Roth is asinine…apples & oranges…but to each his own
seasoned & proven artists > haven’t shown they can be in it for the long haul
anyways…
quirkiness, catering to a small niche within a sub-genre, blahblahblah, MF DOOM still has depth, cleverness & wit that’s acquired after having been in it for a while
I might be wrong on this, but my perception of y’alls complaint about dude is he speaks in tongues…if so, so what?
that’s no different than us using net-speak like “LOL” & “FTW” on a message board and someone who’s a newbie reading comments for the first time, bewildered about how folks communicate
Instead of getting my Flea on and cursing you fools out, I decided to take a more rational approach.
========================================================
Damn, David man why you gotta ether me like that??? lol. Nah, I presume that you’re referring to my expletive-filled rant from the last DOOM post, in which plenty of “interesting” comments were made about DOOM’s music. I’m glad that you mentioned the “Vaudeville Villain” (which I also recommended during my “irrational” tirade) because that is a fucking dope album.
”I may have been the only member of the Crew that was jumping for joy”

Maybe the ”crew” just don’t have a lot of taste…

Enh…
I stand on my firm belief that Doom & all of his aliases & incarnations are not my cup of tea. Does that mean I don’t have taste?
No, it means I have my own, just like you have yours.
Carry on w/your masked man discussion.
“much like Ghost’s Supreme Clientele”
^^
Classic album.. !
@ flea no shots, homie lol. i was about to curse everyone out, too. but i looked at the comments and said “oh, flea got it covered” haha. and your points on vaudeville were on point
I’m not a really big DOOM follower either, but he does have some gems… his production is underrated at times as well.
My DOOM joint of choice: “Raid” off the Madvillainy album.
If anyone doubts DOOM’s ability to drop a hot guest spot too, y’all should remember “Rock. Co. Caine. Flow” on De La’s last joint.
“He eat rappers like part of a complete breakfast/ their rhymes ain’t worth the wait… of their cheap necklace”
/\ clever.
Lot of respect lost though when I heard he was sending clones to his own shows.
Doom>you.

I knew you will respond me exactly this…
hehehe
You do read all the comments, don’t you?
Anyway I totally agree with you…
But I still do find that DOOM is much more original than 75 percent of the ”money cars hoes” fack ass thug rapper these days…
@ Teef
now u can re-edit “MF DOOM” to “DOOM” !
thank the tss lords
doom is nice with his style, good piece on him, many people can’t keep up with his rhymes, shit’s real nice.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING THIS DUDE HIS PROPERS.
I could play DOOM lp’s repeatedly b/c each listen I stumbled across something new.
You do read all the comments, don’t you?
============
Of course i do lol. I don’t always get to reply, but i always read.
If anyone doubts DOOM’s ability to drop a hot guest spot too, y’all should remember “Rock. Co. Caine. Flow” on De La’s last joint.

I like that song, more for Pos’ verse than Doom’s though.

gazillion ear (thom yorke remix) snippet
Off of DOOM’s song “Absolutely”
good to the last drop nig-lets/good til the blast pop them bigot ass piglets/go for the bosses dicks for hire/beat-walkers still get caught up in the crossfire/get @ the sarge, he give the orders/the rest of them punks’ll quit the force or get slaughtered/use stealth, play alleys…jet/we’d rather not alert them nosy federales…yet/keep them local, random cases in each state/skate to the beaches for the season and be straight/You on call, keep your Nikes on tight, no white/anybody tell get lighted on sight….
^^^
This is not atypical of the brilliance in most any DOOM vesre.
Stop sleepin’.
*doesn’t believe the hype*
I will admit he has some serious stans though. How do you pull that impostor bullshit at your shows and keep feeding people the same music over and over again? And people still ride for you? Wow
^ word, OED…
…reading rhymes form certain artists just puts the lyrics in a different light…so ill
….and as I was reading that verse I immediately thought of Oscar Grant and the recent shootings of 4 Oakland cops…eerie
“and keep feeding people the same music over and over again?”
—————————
who are we talking bout here?
The Clipse?
The LOX?
….and for real, on some STRICTLY show-biz shit….
as for the attention garnered by rap bullshit/hijinks to keep my name alive…
non-permance @ shows > PS3 “battles” for $$$ > YouTube “beef” > getting caught w/ 500 lbs of “stuff” > getting shot….
…or maybe it’s just SPECIFIC type bullshit that “we” all have different tolerances for, b/c to ME, at the end of the day, it’s all bullshit, really. Pick your poison. What’s the difference?
word, Teef…
that’s a “sneaky” deep song…
Thought of that too… Grant, and the Black Panther movement, Sean Bell, et al
R.I.P.
to keep my name alive…
——————-
Oops… my = their
Operation Doomsday all day over this, and i haven’t even listened to this yet….
* permance = performance
excuse the Treo
I guess some of you guys consider MF DOOM to be wonderful lovage music, audio erotica. ;)
Hey baby, what’s it gonna be? The Barry White CD or Operation Doomsday?
Doomsday?!?! Oh, baby, baby, baby, wonderful choice, this will ensure that I bring the thunder and rain tonight, jeah. (I dread the thought that any one of you don the DOOM mask, before engaging in vexual healing with your ladies, GULP!). :P
who are we talking bout here?
The Clipse?
The LOX?
=========================
we’re talkin bout DOOM. hasn’t he released Operation: doomsday like three times
….and for real, on some STRICTLY show-biz shit….

really? so if you paid for a DOOM show n he didn’t show up, you’d be okay with it? damn homie, lol
…or maybe it’s just SPECIFIC type bullshit that “we” all have different tolerances for, b/c to ME, at the end of the day, it’s all bullshit, really. Pick your poison. What’s the difference?
===================================
you got a point here.
really? so if you paid for a DOOM show n he didn’t show up, you’d be okay with it? damn homie, lol
—————————-
Honestly, I just wouldn’t fcuk w/a DOOM show @ all unless it was a big venue ala The Rock The Bells Tour.
Problem solved.
As far as Operation Doomsday, he released it the 2nd time because of limited distribution on the 1st release. Shit was going for @ LEAST $40+ as an import on Amazon in limited stock, so the label prolly tried to capitalize off of that.
we’re talkin bout DOOM. hasn’t he released Operation: doomsday like three times
==========================
Nah man, the Doom rhyme pattern is always there, but MM Food was produced by himself, Madvillain by Madlib, Dangerdoom by Dangermouse, Viktor Vaughn by a bunch of people… They all have a different feel depending of the producer really…
Operation Doomday is the JAM. I pretty much love everything including and prior to MM…Food, but DangerDoom and this one not so much.
What I have heard from Asher I can’t make a decision to say if I like him or not…but I hear that he’s really dope or he just sucks! I would hate to be on that end of that stick (pause)….
However, I will say that MF DOOM is definitely different and is force to be felt and is definitely humorous but can flow like niagra (WEEZY!)…so at the moment I will say MF DOOM <Glass Joe Roth…
Anotha Time,
Mally
>* whoops…
fools wanna compare DOOM to Asher Roth, which is a joke…
here’s a better comparison:
DOOM & Lil Wayne
While I’m somewhat of a DOOM stan, I’m not gonna sit up here & hate on Weezy, matter fact, I kinda like dude (nh), but their flow and listener’s perception of their thought process is kinda similar on some disjointed irreverent non sequitur shit…the main difference is the voice, production & subject matter….
I’m not gonna say who’s better, cuz like I said before to each his own, but for some of y’all Weezy heads who hate on DOOM, unless it IS DOOM’s voice, subject matter or production, I just don’t know…
What about DOOM vs Street Smartz feat F.T. and Mike Zoot?
His flow bugs me, I cant listen to him constantly even though I’m a fan. Quite odd actually. How’s the new album though, havent checked it yet
QuoteChris “Halifax” Searl:
“Big fan of Dangerdoom and MM Food… but can’t get into him like others.”
Dangerdoom was that joint.
alot of the audience today doesnt check for/admire dense lyricism…
sad but true…
^ true, and not every thing has to be so linear/straightforward
