DJ Quik. 2nd II None. Hi-C. AMG.

I’ve waited as patiently as possible and now the day is here. I’ve finally got a quality version of “F*ck Yall,” the lead single from DJ Quik and Kurupt’s Blaqkout, which leaked via DJ Nik Bean’s Streetz of L.A. 7 mixtape. For lack of fair judgement, I stapled my lips closed to avoid the speaking on the terrible radio rip I’ve had for a month or so, but now they’re wide open.

Sorry, but I’m not impressed.

The Rhythmalism-esque guitar brings me back to better days, but other than that, the song is Bobby Bland. Not by today’s tumultuous standards, but by the Compton producer’s outerspace range of talent. The drums hit perfect and Quiksta’s verses sound polished (especially after hearing Kurupt spout off ‘shit’ and ‘bitch’ every line…), but this single is far from radio-ready. Instead of “Pitch In On A Party,” “Tonite,” or even “We Can Freak It,” what we’ve got is an angry song over a fly beat. The pieces just don’t fit.

On top of the mismatch, in this so-called extended version, Quik takes shots at every member of his former crew. Hi-C. 2nd II None. Even AMG, the second half the of the short-lived Fixxers, gets some hot sauce. Not even justifiably, either. All his former comrades get is one measly line. A lifetime worth of family, friendship and beautiful music, down the tubes in less than five seconds.

It’s ironic too, because his Skanless crew would’ve sounded right at home over this shimmering beat.
