“To Serve…Or Get Served”
AUDIO By Gotty™ on March 29, 2009 at 1:54 pmI’ve seen this posted a few times already but since I’m on a Black Spade kick right now, I’m going to make sure we highlight it as well.
Apparently, Stoney Rock sent out an email (to everyone but me!) regarding what he claims is the jacking of his beat.
Now, I was @ the same set (assuming it was ours) & told several people afterward that “Shining” had to be the best song from Charles’ show. And now I know why lol.
Yo! So this is the beat Charles Hamilton CLAIMS he created. In short, when I was in Austin to perform and check out SxSW, I caught his set. He performed one of his tracks, “Shinin’”, which I thought was dope. However, come to find out the instrumental that he used for that track is a beat I produced a while back. After he was done performing, I let him know that I produced the beat and asked him where he got it from. In the back of my mind I know that the only place he really could have gotten it from was off my MySpace page. When I told him I produced the track and liked his lyrics, he still continued to say that HE produced the track with some dude….FALSE. He said he cleared the sample and that he is the one singing ‘Shinin’ in the background and also that his homeboy was playing the keys on the track.
Now mind you, the background ‘Shinin’ vocals that he claims he laid were not laid in the studio at all. I know this because I sampled them by singing directly into the MPC.
Basically, the Frankie Beverly & Maze sample at the beginning is from when I put the beat up on MySpace. The whole point of putting that part in the track was to show that I was about to produce, from that part, my own version of the sample. So, if you don’t hear the Frankie Beverly & Maze sample in the MP3 I am sending you, that is why.
Please Blog, a brotha needs his credit…
In case you don’t want to read all that…
– Spade laid the song.
– He claims Charles stole it.
– He asked Charles about it.
– Charles says he didn’t.
– Spade is passing out his version for listeners to determine.
The evidence.
As far as the jacking goes, we’ve seen it too many times with artists posting their material on MySpace, only to have it appear on the airwaves, performed by another cat. Since there’s nothing more to go on than sounds & accusations, you have one man’s word/work against the next. Whether it was in the studio or made on someone’s home computer, nobody’s really going to be able to determine who had the track first. See: Chris Webber & Nas/Strada vs. Wordsmith. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is. Another unsolved mystery.
Really, I think this just reiterates what we’ve been saying: Spade is just as dope & probably more talented than a large percentage of these dudes currently getting shine. He raps, he has singing ability and, for a big brother, son’s got a mean two-step to add to his stage performance. If you’d give him a chance, you would prolly know that. But, since he’s not a media darling & he’s not on one of the preferred coasts, he won’t be getting much burn outside of a few media outlets.
But that’s okay by me.
I’ll be back giving To Serve… repeat listens this week.

Crazy.
CH has been taking shots this week but this theivery accusation is a doozy.
I still like his version better, but beat jacking is a no-no.
Dookie why u do dat?
I really can’t stand Charles Hamilton. Dude is just a little punk.
I just got the email. Good lookin’ Veto lol
Dookie dat ain’t right
I’m just smh @ all these diff sites having to throw up Frankie Beverly & Maze as a point of reference. How do niggas not know that song lol?
Dah well. I’m a Stan so I guess I’m snubbing my nose & should stop.
i wish i had got the email initially – i got it fwd to me. oh well.
and yeah wtf @ people dropping the original… you know how it goes, though – people don’t know their history.
don’t know Frankie Beverly?….Maze?….
Please… get OFF the computer and go to a BBQ this summer.
What is ill about the whole situation is that the loop and drums are so simple that it might actually be a coincidence and Hamilton did the same thing. Nevertheless, anybody who is familiar with Sonic The Hamilton would know that he pretty much flips popular samples, or popular beats that use a sample.
I remember when I first heard “Brooklyn Girls” I felt like he lifted the track, or the “It’s” jawn where they flipped Preemo’s beat for Big L.
I can see Spade wanting credit if Charles puts it on his official album, but on all the mixtapes he doesn’t scream for production credit nor cake off them. Even if CH gaffled a beat he made, he used it on a “mixtape” cuz.
^^^ LOL!
Real talk.
nope thats black spade all the way. its written all over the track. all he did was add a little bit to it. pay up charles.
thanks for updating me on him. somebody feed me some more of this dude, hes beastly.
That real talk was directed @ OED, AJ made a great point.
Let’s not act like Chuck ain’t got beats on his own.
Yo, I was there that night he discovered the theft. On the real, Spade was cool about it all. He just wanted dude to give him acknowledgment and/ props for the track. He even liked the way Charles spit to it, but when he sat there front’n, and basically lying to his face, that’s when he took it as an insult. Guess he thought he was going to try and hit him with a bill for the joint…
Could you imagine if Just Blaze or Swizz Beatz or Kanye West started approaching all the rappers who snatched instrumentals without permission and used them on mixtapes?
Look at all the unofficial Dilla “Tribute” songs/mixtapes (Charles Hamilton’s “And Then They Played Dilla” included) that have been coming out of nowhere the past few years. What if Ma Dukes got Guilty Simpson and Trick Trick to go to aggin’s shows and negotiate on behalf of Dilla.
Sounds ridiculous, right?
(Right.)
Thx Amp…
AJ’s comment was definitely on point. Credit should always be given where its’ due, but I mean, it’s “just” a mixtape…Right?
*waits for a comment from Gotty™*
lol
don’t worry, gotty. it had to be forwarded to me too. mystery still unsolved but CH needs to get some positive PR his way.
Is CH sabotaging most of the momentum he managed to build up for himself, or is it just me?

Yo, I’ve asked myself that same question. It seems like this kid’s press gets more negative as time goes by.
But nowadays, bad publicity can be just as effective as good pub, as long as the music is up to par.
charles hameltons a flaw ass nigga and i hope his day never comes.
too many real rappers out there to let a corn flake ass nigga like this get put on.
TC will tell you it is just a mixtape lol. No dollars were made. In fact, I finally got a hard copy of it.
Personal reaction? Maybe it was kneejerk reaction & he lied. Pull a Jim Jones, tell the truth & keep moving. That’s if you jacked it.
But as someone said, it’s a pretty simple beat. Not like it was disguised @ all. So maybe it was more innocent than folks would assume.
Either way, I just wanted a reason to speak on Black, not degrade Charles lol.
It’s not about publishing or none of that. When music is your only source of income and someone jacks your shit and puts it on their project, that makes the music you made lose it’s relevancy.
Sonic stays losing. Arrogant-small minded child needs to get off his own dick and respect other people more..
What if Ma Dukes got Guilty Simpson and Trick Trick to go to aggin’s shows and negotiate on behalf of Dilla.

Now that I would love to see.
That Black Spade album stays on heavy rotation, I bought it and didn’t regret it. Spade should just let it slide, he already has one dope album to his credit, what does Sonic Charlie have??? On the real, just make more ill music my ninja.

But this whole “controversy” has given Black Spade more light then any favorable write up could have. I guarantee there are cats who have never heard of dude that are digging for his music just off the strength of this fuckery.
^
True.
think twice !
Good point Amp
in five years we will know who is a better artist and who is playing video games in their mom’s basement.
and I’ve known Black Spade for years and never seen him play one video game.
This is retarded. If you gonna sample a song that is so popular chop it up or something. If CH did swipe it there is a good reason why it was from his myspace and not a studio lol.
But yeah listening to the tracks its really just a sample with some drums, move onnnn
Or yall could quit talking about “its a sample chop”, and LISTEN to the black spade version and see that he REPLAYED EVERYTHING. None of the original song is in that beat AT ALL, Nor is the singing. All of that shit was done by him. Charles overdubbed some bullshit hi pitched singing over Spades voice and threw some shitty ass synths over the original synths. Please, AGAIN understand that NONE OF THE ORIGINAL sample was used in Spade’s beat.
good lord folks dont know when to stop being fans, and just keep it real.
Ya boy is a fucking fraud.

Everytime I touch down on a different blog I have to say what Van just said..Stoney replayed all that shit and used his own vocals in replacement for the Frankie vocals, real producers know this makes it easier to gain clearance and real muscians tend to be able to do these kinds of things..
this is my blood my brother I’m his youngest sibling and my brother isn’t a liar, this beat has been floating around on plenty beats cd’s I’ve gotten from him..
there is no sample issue because he replayed all of the music by ear..Charles simply keeps asking him what key the song is played in becuz he wants to try and replay it his damn self..
some cat above said its a mixtape track and he should let it go..but thats the entire point ..if he would’ve simply pubbed it as a Charles Hamilton mixtape track prod by Black Spade then this was over..he didn’t even have an issue with CH using the beat..my brother simply wants the production credit he deserves ..he’s not trying to come up of off this lil’dude, but more get his properly deserved credit..come on now y’all
Yo,
Just making sure everyone who commented here (ESPECIALLY the people who doubted Black Spade) saw the latest update:
http://www.freshselects.net/charleshamiltonstealsbeats
Video evidence of not only Black Spade re-playing ever part of his beat
But even better – another video showing Spade’s beat sitting right there in the very ProTools sessions that Charles posted as an attempt to clear his name – labelled & everything!
Its over.
Here’s a full podcast of Black Spade.
Such a mellow, humble dude. If everyone even wondering a little if this is his beat ever met the man, they’d know he’s 100% real with all this.

Truly Mcfly
dude black spade is full of shit…
CH is the truth..
CHARLES HAMILTON DID NOT EVEN STEAL THE BEAT. LIKE MANY COMMON PRODUCERS IN HIP HOP, HE SAMPLED IT. LISTEN CLOSELY TO EACH OF THE INSTRUMENTAL, CHARLES HAMILTON ADDED DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTALS THAN TO WHAT BLACK SPADE HAD AND USED DIFFERENT PARTS. IF CHARLES HAMILTON STOLE THIS BEAT AND USED IT AS HIS, YOU GUYS ARE SAYING THAT J-DILLA, WHO WAS A BEAT-MAKING PIONEER IS A BEAT-MAKING THIEF. THINK ABOUT IT.
Im a big CH fan, I cant myself see how anyone could really conclusively tell who made the track; Its a very simple sample and the black spade version doesnt have anything on it except basic drums and stuff.. Charles made an amazing song out of it, should have said if he didnt sample it himself, but at the end of the day it was on the pink lavalamp which wasnt released commercially anyway, so I dont see that it matters. It is just sampling, you are basically demanding credit for cutting up about 5 seconds of someone elses song..
Black Spade is totally lying he says he “produced” the song in 07. Shinin was recorded November 18th 2006. At the end of the song he? says, Yung Nate. Nigga your birthday coming up. You aint that young.
Nates birthday was November 23rd
