Vibe is still under observation, but the prognosis got a little better. The rumor of it folding proved to be false, but not unwarranted.
Vibe magazine is cutting its paid circulation 25%, reducing its frequency to ten issues a year from twelve and merging its print and digital editorial operations, all in the magazine industry’s latest response to the twin attacks by recession and new media.
But Vibe is also departing from the standard playbook by introducing a twice-a-year newsstand-only celebrity tabloid. It plans to increase the subscription price for its flagship. And it is avoiding layoffs by adopting a four-day workweek accompanied by 10% to 15% pay cuts for its employees. The new day off, at least to start, will be Friday, though some staffing will be organized to keep the office open five days a week.
In the grand scheme of things this is a pretty good deal, since it’s better to be proactive than reactive in situations like this. The employees may be smarting at the reduced work week and pay cut, but it’s definitely better than the alternative: unemployment. My job is currently going through a similar situation and it sure did suck letting people go and having to do more with less. However, knowing that your job is actually trying to stay in business instead of waiting to turn over the closed sign and run off will be somewhat comforting to those who stick around. Also with them merging the print & digital operations, it should strengthen the skills of those involved. The web site and print mag should each improve in some way as people go across disciplines.
But in reality this akin to putting a bandage over a gash that needs stitches. The print industry overall is spiraling downward and Vibe is covering a industry that’s standing on it’s last leg as well. They can do all the restructuring they want, but ad revenue is still down (17.7% last year & 19.9% in 2007) and that will be the hardest thing to recover from. The advertisers are running away in droves and will be the last ones to come back, but only if things turn around. My suggestion to whoever makes the cut is ride this bitch until the wheels fall off. Keep your resume current and get your finances in order. Obviously, if a better job comes up take it, but making a lateral move to another publication that’s privately having the same problems isn’t the best move. That’s what I’m doing at least. Keeping my nose clean and flying under the radar. Sure you gotta work a little harder and you checks could reflect that better, but it beats pounding the pavement while living on unemployment.
Like Jeezy said “It’s a recession, everybody’s broke” so who’s hiring anyway?

Nat King Cole, was a merry ole sole.
Vibe getting it lobbed off like that dude in the Royce video, however, Vibe History of Hip Hop is still a great read.
Will they sign with KOCH now?
I’m one of the few but I’ve always liked Vibe for some reason. Sure it’s lightweight but they always seemed a bit more classier than the others.
damn i like vibe too. Shits crazy. I wonder when things will get better?
This shit is so sad and scary simultaneously. I’ve been wanting to write for a living since I was 13. Music journalism specifically (started out wanting to write for The Source *raised brow*). I still have ancient Vibes, and Sources and Rap Pages (I think) lying around my old bedroom at my parents’ house. All of this is just happening quicker than anyone could’ve imagined, muhfuckers got sideblinded, and damn it, we ALL better be prepared and learn HTML!
Vibe is way classier than most mags…for some reason XXL rubbed me the wrong way
I’ve always liked Vibe as a change of pace. It definitely had the best layout.
It’s not just Vibe. LATimes, Huff Post, etc. The big dogs of print are downsizing as well. Trickle down like a mofo. If company’s are losing money, they can’t advertise. They can’t advertise, mags & such can’t operate.
I stopped reading the Vibe regularly in the early 00′s, though I admit, it used to be one of my faves back in the day because it was “classy” like Gotty mentioned. It was urban music’s “The Rolling Stone” in a sense. The internet has it’s figurative boot on the throat of print media & I don’t see it letting up.
I couldn’t read XXL anymore after I turned about 14. Vibe had a pretty nice appeal to it. Not as feature heavy, but competent writing, the air of maturity (in comparison to the Source and XXL), and some decent interviews.
Good looks on the albums! A couple of them– Goodie Mobb and Def Squad are definitely on my Top 100 underrated list…
Do any of you have any more Isaac Hayes links? I’d really appreciate it– HUGE hole in my collection.
Agree w/ Baby Paw– the Vibe History of Hiphop was very well done. In my opinion, one of the best volumes on the topic.
Thanks for passing along MZ.
I stopped reading magazines since 1999 and I tossed all my old Source mags in the recycling bin. The Internet has essentially committed financial homicide on print media, and the cases are cold never to be solved. The smart publications are embracing the new technology or getting crushed by it. Right now the New York Times, USA Today, Associated Press, Bloomberg News, The Toronto Star all have moblie apps for the i-Phone where you can read everything the print version has and more. Why aren’t more music-based publications doing this???
I’m a fan of the net just as much as anyone else. We’ve discussed this before but seriously, I WANT something to read while I’m on the shitter. It’s necessary.
On the topic, fuck the Kindle too. I want books. I want to that new book smell. I want that old book smell. I want books. I want tangible goods.
@ Gotty: Hold your/BlackBerry/i-Phone/laptop while you dump. LOL!!! Hey, I scroll through news articles on my i-phone when I take a crap. Still, I hear what Gotty is saying; flipping through nice glossy pages with cool ads is nice somtimes.
^ I do lol.
But I still want mags yo. I still buy mags & like to go leaf thru them @ Borders & shit. Still have subscriptions (they’re cheap as hell anyways) just so I can say I did my part in trying to help them survive.
the only good thing about vibe is if you leave it in the bathroom after dropping a duce the perfume and cologne ads mask the smell of the shit you just took/left.
aye…your boy suge just got beat the fuck up again.
this time by akorns buisness manager…is akon trying to start a west coast/south coast beef? first he shits on nate dogg now this?
^ LOL @ Petey speaking the troof about leaving the mags open on the perfume ads
