“They’re like people…but sheep.”
Can’t remember where I heard that quote, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t apply now.
I came across this video while researching innovative media solutions pretending to be busy at work. The content: alleged reaction of a certain rapper to the alleged altercation between two popstars from some anonymous tipster.
Excuse me one second as I climb atop this here soapbox.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are yet to get a single solid fact beyond the obvious (that something happened on that particular Saturday night) and already full-fledged campaigns are being launched on the backs of all these claims.
Good job MTV, you’re officially the drunken prom queens of speculative media. Take a bow © Rihanna.
Have people really gotten to the point where they have absolutely nothing better to do than to focus on this baseless fiasco is such great detail, with increasingly inflated allegations at every turn?
Pretty soon, an unofficial report will leak claiming that he hit her with a Thor’s hammer after unleashing a pack of wild hounds on her, and how we should’ve seen this coming because he took a picture with Michael Vick and Ike Turner a few years back.
Frankly, even if that was the case, I wouldn’t give a small lump of shit. She’s obviously alive and well. He’s obviously being punished. But is it really that sad?
Where was all this speculation, all these tears of sadness and rage, when a group of young black men were assaulted and one was killed, videotaped in broad daylight by the police? Where was the outrage when this tragedy was neglected by the same media screaming “We want to know!” now? These were hard, publicly available facts, not assumptive allegations. No research required, no mystery informant, just multiple video recordings of murder and assault.
It was laid on the table and served to perfection and America took a glimpse, whimpered and walked away. Just last week, I mentioned the name Oscar Grant to a local radio personality and she didn’t know who he was. I told her the story. She was outraged and surprised, supposedly because the story wasn’t covered in depth. Meanwhile, they have a special on Rihanna and Chris Brown, and a hotline set up for battered women. Can I get a hotline for police abuse and Oscar Grant update?
Most people found out about Oscar more than a week after the incident(if at all), but the same folks knew about Chrianna eighteen hours before the young sir had to turn himself in. All due respect, getting pimpslapped to whatever degree has nothing on getting shot in the back of the head, after getting roughed up.
To quote Jay-Z (who has been misquoted & thrown in as a part of this insanity):
“They don’t give a shit unless the accused just happens to rap, and they can look good by painting him as bad news/ Cause in my past I seen dudes get half of they views exposed to the curb….and nobody said a word.”
Rap, sing. Whatever. Young black entertainer, entertain us.

Society…Fail
Contra, my brother, you are on point with this.
I’m still upset about Oscar Grant. It’s like we were upset for about 10 seconds and then all of a sudden “Etta James is gonna whup Beyonce’s ass!”
*sigh*
“Can I get a hotline for police abuse and a Oscar Grant update?”
No. Sorry. All lines are busy speculating on what really happened in that Lambo that night, and how we must protect our daughters from the ‘scary black man’.
Real fucking talk Contra!!! Who gives a fuck about some teenage romance gone awry??? By no means do I condone violence against women, but the media is probing this situation for answers more than the Government looking for answers from Wallstreet about the financial crisis. This presents the question: If Chris had assaulted a woman of lesser stature, say a regular around-the-way-chick, would anyone give two flying-fucks???
^ Say word E. Brock.
Why are we surprised that the media would choose to highlight the juicer story. Tha’s how they for the most part operates.
Good shit Contra. But I asked this here before: What are WE prepared to do about it?
When the black guy gets killed or treated like dirt. It’s normal.
But if he fucks up, everyone overreacts.
Same shit, different pamper. © Joell Ortriz
I think my issue with this is I know there are many more regular (non rihanna status) women that are seriously one beat down away from death but they have to fight and spend thousands just for a restraining order but this dude already has a pending investigation and a possible court date…its such a weird hollywood double standard and personally i’m over this i pray both get help, move on and leave each other alone.
Nicely written Contra.
Nice write up… in media Eyes
Chris & Rhianna sell magazines and Oscar doesn’t.
Cops kill people every day, but how often do pop stars go Ike on their pop princess girlfriends?
No amount of pub is gonna change a flawed/racist justice system.
@Bigga
You know, until I read what you had said, I forgot A-Rod was caught taking Tic-Tacs.
Oops. Shows what’s important on my list of things.
@ Chuck_You
What are YOU prepared to do about it? Everybody thinks that one person can’t change anything, but throwing the smallest pebble into a pond still makes ripples, the effects of which won’t probably be seen by the pebble. Can you handle doing something to change the landscape of our country knowing that you, your kids, and possibly your children’s children won’t ever see? Just asking, not trying to start anything.
*deep sigh*
R.I.P. Mr. Grant
ps.:
that is all, but I am really disappointed that TSS did a post about this situation due to the fact that J had something to say….but I am really, really proud that Contra™ managed to relate this blown out media frenzy to an issue that is more important/deeper to this society….
Its funny white America never thinks its a problem until they see a issue they can profit off of…
Thats I way I hope having a minority in office will over power/”CHANGE” these bias views and really honor the constitution fully, and not with a blind eye towards the less fortunate…..
Dont they understand that if everyone is making money than they will make more money?? BLAH, never mind, let me get back to what i know….
your just hating because your not from Barbados ….
@ Nano, maybe so.
@ Blazed: I honestly didn’t wanna touch this whole thing, until this got sent to me by a co-worker. It’s an itch I needed to scratch, is all.

Contra that is real as fuck right there homie. I stay in Frisco so this shit was all over the place, papers, news radio, etc. about O Grant. And I am sure in other parts of the country it probably got a good 5 minutes on the press. Yo I feel bad lil Chris smack his bitch up but all this media hype with no charges even filed.. . yet.. . ridiculous.. . But someone tell me how does that trump a kid getting killed by the po po? Man the system is fucked to the ump degree. I guess it’s ok just like it’s ok to have the President in the form of a monkey getting shot by cops for passing a bill to help Americans… .
*shakes head and pounds fist on desk*
Sorry to say, Grant wasn’t the first & he won’t be the last.
@Contra™
You certainly found the itch (if that makes sense)…
I am a glad that you managed to relate this to something that is really hurting this society, not to say that domestic violence isn’t a serious issue….
Just saying that homicides are a deeper issues, and the government realizes that, its the media that has problems understanding logic….
ps.:
Thank the almighty for internet, blogs, and hi-speed/wireless connections!! I would of never found out about Mr. Grant, Mr. Bell, nor the Jena 6 (just to name a few) if it wasn’t for this incredible device….I would of been stuck in PHILLY were niggaz are actually shooting back at cops, go ahead google that shit, just last week another cop got popped in board daylight….
pss.:
Yall can always count on PHILADELPHIA to be down for the “CAUSE”/Revolution….
Society is sick.
The bullshit distractions are how “we” medicate ourselves…
unfortunately.
Good post homey. But what I think you meant to say with your quote was:
They’re like sheep… but people.
“Most people found out about Oscar more than a week after the incident(if at all), but the same folks knew about Chrianna eighteen hours before the young sir had to turn himself in.”
That’s because an hour of a celebrity’s time is more valuable than the life of an everyday man. It’s total bullshit how we look at these people like their gods, just because they entertain us. It’s total bullshit that people who make a difference, like teachers, the police (or at least the ones who do what they’re suppose to) and community organizer have to struggle to make their next meal feed their families while the celebrities sit in the lap of luxury. And why, because they made me laugh or feel good for an hour?
Celebrities are no better than the rest of us yet we want to know everything about them. They’re seen as the role models that people should look up to. It’s sad how we worry about the well being of ourselves and our relationships with others when something happens to them. Yet we wonder why they have such fucked up lives and big egos.
That’s what’s wrong with the world now. We value the wrong shit.
Contra, A+ piece, will read again!!!

I agree that there are too many overlooked cases for this one to get this much light. The only thing that would make the high spotlight on this case worth it at all is if he gets the book thrown at him, just to make it clear that this stuff isn’t okay.
KNOWLEDGE DROPPED!
Thank You!
Ok.. I am the only one that doesn’t completely buy into Contra™’s well-intentioned and yet still not quite reflective article.
Let me start by saying this, Yes there are things out there that are happening that deserve WAY more coverage than this incident that doesn’t have facts to it. Yes – there should be more coverage – HOWEVER – you are including in this rant for equal coverage MTV and its brethren media outlets to provide us Real News About Real People.
sorry that is where YOU fail. These are media outlets that are geared towards “celebrity” news.. While it would be great if they covered things that truly mattered, the truth is those things don’t make the people keep watching. That may sound harsh to the intentions of those who watch those type shows for “news” But it isn’t because it would have the people out and about trying to do something about it and THAT doesn’t fit the model that medis outlets are built on. They need their viewers to keep watching, to keep listening so they feed them/us news that we can’t change and even if we did it requires less from us.
Seriously.. which do you watch more MTV, or MSNBC? and even if you could say you watch 1 more than the other.. and you say that about any of 10 random people you know?
And before you say… the REAL News ain’t covering it either.. please remember they depend on those very same $$’s that the Hollywood set rakes in.
What is the solution? Fucked if i know.. but we aren’t going to find it on ESPN/MTV/BET … etc.
Still a well written and focused article from Contra™ >>> Than another story of him running into Johnny Law in quiet, quaint yet still backwards Alabama/Georgia/Mississippi.
“Pretty soon, an unofficial report will leak claiming that he hit her with a Thor’s hammer after unleashing a pack of wild hounds on her, and how we should’ve seen this coming because he took a picture with Michael Vick and Ike Turner a few years back.”

lol
It’s simple; Jay gave Rihanna herpes and he dont want that to come out because Sarah will drop him fierce and go away with almost everything he ownes. And after all it wasnt such a good year for Jay’s revenue’s this year compared to past years.
While you make a good point in regards to Oscar Grant – essentially that his was a more important story than Rihanna’s, you over sell it. That it happened and was criminally under-reported does not negate the facts you so flippantly dismiss.
Consistently, at that.
If you’re so concerned about Oscar Grant why not run stories on him and not mention the Rihanna incident beyond the odd report? That’s being proactive and smart. I don’t think you can have it both ways here.
Beyond that, referring to the media as though they beat Rihanna is just stupid. Surely you’re smarter than that.
215 is the craziest, but it’s home
“If you’re so concerned about Oscar Grant why not run stories on him? ”
Agree.
Its a two-pronged thing:
1.) Media outlets need to make money, and they’ve figured out that the best ROI comes on following a small specific group of people’s lives in incredible intricate detail. (quote Dave Chappelle: “once you get famous, you can’t get un-famous.) 99.9 percent of this is mundane garbage (so and so is fat, person A broke up with person B.) But when something that’s actually newsworthy happens (this counts…A-Rod’s roid saga,) it becomes an incredible shitshow. Think of how happy MTV is about this story, that’s how many 24 hour news cycles they just got filled.
Blame the sheeple, blame the internet, whomever, it is what it is right now.
2.) This story hits on an issue that is actually legitimate…guys beating their women. Its not ok, it happens probably more than we all think, and its something that people can relate to much easier than the Oscar Grant story. Cops dont kill people in the suburbs, but plenty of people beat their wives.
@ Nina & Youngflizz:
Run it back and check how many O. Grant posts there are on TSS….Same thing goes with Sean Bell last year. Every update, minute or major was mentioned by at least one person on crew.
I’m just saying. ur pointing ur fingers at the wrong people.
Yeah, but the point is, you’re totally dismissing violence against women as an important issue. As you say, you don’t give a “small lump of a shit.” It’s not an either or, they’re both important. I’m very glad people flipped over cop cars.
Contra,
Dude, that’s great you guys ran pieces on O. Grant. Keep doing it whenever you have a new angle. Or just run the same shit over and over – even that would be worthwhile. Seriously. This though, this was not a new angle.
Acting like this had anything to do with the Rihanna story was just an act of bad faith.

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.
