Words By Jason Hortillas
Today would be exactly be three years to the day when one of the greatest producers Hip-Hop has ever known passed away due to complications stemming from his fight with Lupus. With all those we love who pass on, we honor their lives rather than their death. Moreover with artists, their legacy lives on with the work that made us “fall in love” in the first place. Stones Throw recently put out live audio from Jaylib on tour in 2004.
One of the best tributes ever done on Dilla was by Jazz pianist and Blue Note artist Robert Glasper. Set to tour with Q-Tip, Glasper straight up murders his renditions of well known Dilla beats on “J Dillalude.” Here’s the live version with Glasper on the keytar (yes ketar) and the vocoder Roger Troutman style, as Mos Def spits lyrics off of “Stakes is High” by De La Soul.
When you hear live renditions of DIlla beats as exampled above, it’s hard not say he is in consideration of the best ever. And yes like the t-shirts made after his passing, “J Dilla changed my life.” Who else can you sincerly say you feel the same about?

remember when he ruined atcq
Dope
RIP to Dilla man, one the best for sure. I’ve been a fan since the Slum-Village days, not some dick-rider (no homo) who downloaded his catalog after his death and never acknowledged him when he was alive. That “Ruff Draft” album is my joint, “Jaylib” is a classic. TURN IT UP!!!
god bless jay dee.
Peepin liner notes of Labcabin and From Where had me intrigued.. I remember clearly when I had bought a copy off the of Its Fantastic Vol. 2 (The Interscope release with the great artwork) on a rainy day in Amsterdam. When I ran across it in the import rack right between not quotable records I felt euphoric in an instant. when I got home and put that on my 1200 I was blown away.. the rest is history.. simply brilliant music.
DILLA RIP
he DID NOT ruin atcq…they ran their course as a group (they were lyrically dropping off from midnite to beat, rhymes…AND from beats, rhymes…to love movement there was another lyrical decrease)
dillas music fit them well…he just missed the train of their prime/lyrical peak…not his fault
RIP Dilla

What ruined ATCQ was Tip and Phife. The beats on Beats, Rhyme and Life and The Love Movement were cool, but lyrically something was missing…
I actually bought “In My Element” on cd. No one carried it and I had to go to J&R Music World(NYC). Anyways – FTB is the truth as well – bump that!
I own a J Dilla Changed My Life tee, wear it to every concert I go to and always get pointed out by whoever is on stage. Black Milk is coming up, guarantee he’ll give me props.

Yea, the beats on that album are what they should have sounded like. Considering people thought Dilla did tracks on previous Tribe albums, the beats weren’t the problem. The chemistry wasn’t there like in previous albums. Even still, I like this album better than People Instinctive Travels.
Midnight > Low End > Beats Rhymes Life
REST IN BEATS
Thinking of Dilla always makes me think of Electric Circus. It was ahead of its time, Common wishes he could release that album now. Imagine that album being brought out with how todays music is going.
