EDUTAINMENT By David D. on February 20, 2009 at 9:09 amThe jokes are over. It’s not funny anymore.
*Tags in. Takes Contra™’s place on the soapbox*
Many of us cracked jokes and compared the couple to Ike and Tina or Bobby and Whitney because we heard the story but didn’t quite know what happened. I imagined a backhand that left her cheek red that is still deplorable, but this…this is something completely different. The photo that surfaced last night make Chris Brown’s alleged attack on Rihanna is borderline gruesome. Fuck their careers and what this means for Brown’s endorsements. This is about a woman being beaten by a man.
I know some are crying foul thinking that this particular issue is only getting attention because Brown and Rihanna are celebrities. Though that may be the case, there is now an opportunity to deal with a terrible issue. Now there’s a face to domestic violence.
Vick made middle America want to save every puppy on the street. Baseball made us want to make sure rich kids weren’t doping up before games. Now what happens as a result of this?
I agree with Contra™ that there are much more important issues going on than Chris Brown and Rihanna. But if we extend this to domestic violence in general (especially in the African American community), then there’s a cogent issue to focus on:
According to the Institute of Domestic Violence in the African American Community, domestic violence is the number one cause for homicide in African-American women.
So we have a high-profile case with a real issue attached. Now what happens? Here’s hoping that the unfortunate situation turns into a positive crusade against domestic violence. But I think this concern will have to come from African-American communities because something tells me CNN won’t bite into this story as much as if (heaven forbid) Jennifer Anniston or Britney Spears showed up with marks on their faces.
I have three sisters, a wonderful mom and two nieces. I never want to see this picture of their faces. Hopefully this horrific situation can be turned into something educational and helpful for communities and households that have to see this mess every day.
Let’s chill with the Youtube videos and satires for a minute and let the involved parties deal with this.
Please?

its still kinda funny
I whole-heartedly agree. While it was funny before, it definitely isn’t funny before. Originally when the story broke and it was said that he hit her because she gave him herpes, why did everyone “get it” then? Why was it ok that she got battered because she allegedly gave him an STD? Let me refrain from going in on agreeing with you because it’ll end up a blog entry but yet, it is no longer a joke anymore.
Here’s hoping that the unfortunate situation turns into a positive crusade against domestic violence.
==============================
You’d think so, but it’ll probably end up being a negative crusade against Chris Brown, which really doesn’t address the issue.
I’ve dealt with domestic violence personally and seen family and friends go through the same thing. It really is an issue and, like you mentioned, it’s only getting attention because they’re celebs, but at least it’s getting attention I guess…Although I don’t see how you solve a problem like domestic violence, people are gunna do what they want. You can’t stop violence, it’s just the nature of man I suppose…
Nicely done, David. You make some great points. Listen up, Section.
I don’t know if I would call it funny and I don’t know that I could ever smack a female….that dosen’t mean that wifey dosen’t get me so pissed sometimes that I want to CB her ass, Somewhere I am just able to find restraint.
IMO some people need to just extend their thought process a little bit.Thinking of the results before I act seems to work for me most of the time. People should think a little harder before all sorts of violent shit goes down. Heaters are are good and fine, but you gotta think hard and make the right call as to when to pull that shit or it’s gonna fuck your world up..Same with a domestic dispute, personally I don’t need those headaches in my life…..
Females do need to stop trippin’ as well though. Enough’s enough sometimes.
What do you tell a female with 2 black eyes?
Nothing shes already been told twice by Chris Brown…lol
well said.
You hope anyone female or male(no Bob Saget) that is in an abusive relationship, will not suffer in silence and report the abuser. As well as get out of the relationship. You are going to see more programs about abusive relationships because they can tie it in to this case for ratings. But as soon as this case dies down, that will be the end of it.

I’m gonna take a wild guess you haven’t peeped the pics. As much as I ride for my machismo, dude’s on his own for this one, esp if those pics prove true (which they obviously have been substantiated by the LAPD trying to figure out who leaked’em). There’s not much a bird can do to justify the ass whoopin her served up.
And as a father of a daughter, I can’t even consider laughing.
Thanks for the words, D.
I know women can be frustrating, but I can’t think of any situation that warrants a man hitting a woman. I’m not sure why this particular situation was ever funny to anyone… especially now that you can see the damage he did… how swollen her face is from being choked… her bleeding mouth. Not really any way to make it funny.
I’ve often heard men say women will never understand how painful it is to be kicked in the balls. Maybe the reverse is men will never understand how terrifying it is as a woman to even think of being beaten up by a man, or worse.

^just in case, folks
Yeah, that picture changed everything. Not the least bit funny anymore. Great writeup David D.
While it was never funny, it’s a shame that the pictures had to leak for this to become a more serious issue.
Definitely not funny. Shame on all you who think it is. Coming from a father of 2 girls.
Fuck this shit. I just saw the pictures. Disgusting.
You. Don’t. Fucking. Hit. Women.
End of story. You’re not a man if you do.
ya’ll sound like bitches
Well, to be honest, it never was funny to begin with.
I have a mother, 2 lovely aunts, a couple of sisters, some cousins, a niece…
There really wouldn’t have been anything to talk about, you understand? That right there…
I can say, I’ve been in a situation before, with the mother of my child no less, where she didn’t know when to let me walk away. As much as I tried walking away, she wouldn’t let me. She picked up a plexiglass cutting board and smashed me upside the head. (All jokes are welcome after 3 PM today, before then, keep it to yourself.) Did I want to hit her? You damn right. Did I hit her? No. Did I shake her? Yes. I can admit that I grabbed her arms and shook her like a Yoohoo © Smoke from Field Mob. Was I justified in doing so?
No.
No matter how out of control a woman may get, nothing she does can really make you put your hands on her like this. I tried not to make Chris a villain. I tried to wait until to whole story popped.
I tried not to imagine my sisters in that picture.
I can’t do none of the above anymore.
1st of all, did ya’ll know Lionel Richie(Not Ye) dropped an album this month?
2nd I will laugh when his ass is in jail/on probation with an officer/anger management/and praying for forgiveness not asking for it. Too many women let men get away with abusing them and therefore I say make an example out of him, I don’t care who he is. I know its hard for Rihanna b/c she prob does have strong feelings for him(i.e-she didn’t call, someone else did) in saying that every woman stand strong you have support. I hope Rihanna has the strength to fry his ass like its the middle of July and the temp is 125 ° with no shade or water muthafucka. I know I did and many other women have stood strong, even if alone in bringing the devil to his knees. Hopefully she can move on, call Halle/Lisa/Oprah they all been there and I’m sure willing to help you through, good luck, get well, and come back ready to testify( No Common bullshit though)
@toomanydinners
Either you get beat like that daily, or you have no compassion for a human being. What, did some female scorn you? Get you locked up for smacking her across the face? You think that it’s ok to keep your women in check with a strong backhand?
No matter, you need to seek help. Immediately.
We sound like bitches because we have family we don’t want to see in that position, EVER, because we’ll end up in prison?
Nah, you’re the bitch for saying it’s funny. The shit’s not funny.
Good, much needed post David.
Kudos DD. Nailed it on the head.
However.
Speculation on this matter is not helping anyone. Don’t get me wrong. Anyone on crew will attest that I love my women to the highest degree, and have nothing but the most profound reverence for their presences and purposes here, and hence disgust for battery of any sorts.
If this was all about Domestic Violence, and only that, I would be full behind the crusade, waving my flag the highest.
But at the end of the day, this will be about Rihanna and Chris. More people are already concerned with their careers than with anything else, and I’d be damned and damn surprised if they go beyond that after sentencing, and the hype dies down.
As someone who’s family has worked with NGO’s that oft catered to battered women, here and in Africa, this feels a little like a toe stomp with a smile. The hardships we would go through just to get radio time with zero funding is now being made to look like a failed insufficient effort, and a sign of neglect…
In the long -run, this will just make it even harder for said NGO’s and NPO’s because once the spotlight goes away, once it becomes about Chris’ sentencing, or Rihanna’s new album….it’s back to the pits, back to the grassroots; but now the public will have higher expectations…
People need to STOP focusing on those two, STOP focusing when it makes the news, and DEDICATE themselves to making a cause, any cause, a part of their daily lives and habits. Do something about anything all the time.
If our lives are about something, then we can keep our noses out of people’s business and let a girl salvage what she can of her 21st birthday. Instead of reviving the flames of a sensationalized damnation of what should be a very serious issue.
Done.
Laughing at the jokes is about the same as saying them myself, so I am guilty. But when I saw the pics, I figured the jokes would stop. Much to my dismay, they didn’t.
Yesterday on CNN they did a story on the lady in the middle east whose husband through (I believe) acid on her face. It almost made me throw up when they showed footage of her now.
I’m not going to front like I haven’t looked the other way or agreed when the topic of hitting a woman has come up. A slap here or there, COULD BE justifiable (even though I would never do so myself). But this is something different. This is what the dude who harmed someone in your family looks like. This is what family members go to jail for when they go to payback the misdeed.
Chris Brown deserves whatever he has coming to him.
Thanks! I Agree With You.
yeah hitting a woman is NEVER justified. I grew up where my step pops use to beat on my moms and I promised myself from that point on that I would never lay my hand on a woman. and I never have, even when I had them crazy ass ex’s that put hands all on me, slapping, punching, etc. the most I would do is just push them away. besides the minute a man puts his hands on a woman, five-o’s is gonna take her side no matter how bad she was tearing yo ass up. But word up tho, domestic violence needs to be addressed more. Good write up DD.
If you are a male that has anger issues, seek some kind of professional help or guidance counseling.
Women & Men (def. men) need to both keep their hands to themselves.
I’ve been on the receiving end of a woman scorned. I’ve also been involved in a “pushing & shoving match”, which I was none too proud of.
Needless to say If a woman hits me, as much as I don’t care for law enforcement or the judicial system, they will be involved.

Unfortunately that’s not what the law states…
I wish I could say that he tired to put her out the car when he went to go get the keys, and she attacked him but your fighting in/near a Lamborghini who is not gonna notice?? He does lose all his respect for still acting like a hood nigga, when he is a pop icon, but in his defense he is only 21-23 and yes we have all made silly decisions in this age period….
Maybe we was drinking n driving (see chuck), maybe we was fighting pits (see vick), or maybe we were selling illegal contraband (see blogs) but none of us are perfect and we are entitled to are flaws, its not like he was denying this shit, its not like he was trying to make it seem like it was her fault (we were the wrong ones), and its not like he tired to run or escape in his lambo like most hood niggaz would but it seems like he felt remorse, pain, and maybe a little suffering since people close to him been though the same….
So yes he will have to deal with this one like a real adult, now lets all hope he gets the proper counseling we all know that Ike didn’t, Bobby didn’t, we don’t need another statistic affecting the black community especially when we have come so far in our fight for equality!!
david, i love you.
“If this was all about Domestic Violence, and only that, I would be full behind the crusade, waving my flag the highest.

This is sad but I agree. People are more concerned with individual cases rather than the issue at hand. And the most that they’re talk about is what it’s doing to Chris Brown’s career. If they must make this an issue, please focus it on the right thing and that’s domestic violence (That means not just boycott Chris because he hit a woman, fight the issue)
I’d be lying if I said I never had any jokes on this matter. And I’d be lying if I said I never hit a woman (On some cousin arm punching shit, which still wasn’t cool) but God forbid I ever do anything like that to a woman.
But still I pray the best for both of them. For Rihanna to get better physically, emotionally and mentally and for Chris to get himself together (psychiatrist maybe?) and turn over a new leaf.
“So yes he will have to deal with this one like a real adult, now lets all hope he gets the proper counseling we all know that Ike didn’t, Bobby didn’t, we don’t need another statistic affecting the black community especially when we have come so far in our fight for equality!!”
Real shit. Get at the problem so it won’t extend. Because sometimes punishment doesn’t mean results.
anyone need an avatar?

Good piece Dave. Well put. That picture made me sick when I saw it.
That is all.
If you’re a man and feel like smacking up a female, don’t do it, instead get your female cousins to undertake this task, job done.
Finally, thank-you.
Yeah, I thought it was funny at first. But looking at the photos reminded me of my younger sister. She was in an abusive relationship. Things got outta hand, so I beat the living shit outta that fool she was going out with.
Problem is, she went back to him. I gave up on her, told her never to call me again. After a while, she broke up with him. *sigh of relief*
That is another problem with battered women, they feel it was their mistake. They feel the abuse is a sign of affection.
The photos dont change a thing for me. I wasnt laughing at the idea of hitting a woman, I was laughing at who it was, laughing at how unbelievable it is really.
I feel for Rihanna, it looks like she got fucked up. Now I actually have a reason to hate Chris Brown. But yeah, there is still part of me that wants to laugh.
LOL@baby paw, its nothing like laughing in a whores face after she talk all that shit: how she will fuck your bitch ass up if you put your hands on her while, she is poking you all up in the chest, neck, and (hopefully not) face….Than she gets slammed by your peoples!!!
oh yea, thats good ol hood shit…
Bitches are the ones that talk that big shit to men but never can back it up, thats why they cry domestic at the end….
Females/Ladies are the ones that go get there peoples to handle a nigga dumb enough to argue/raise they hand to a woman!! Just walk away…
Women are going to talk they shit, thats what they do, but as a man you have to learn to laugh it off, let her make the decision on leaving, or just be more prepared for when you get caught….Cause getting caught is inevitable, its how you handle the womans’ bitching!!
Just to clear up, the “Observing from the sidelines” comment was me.
@ Kthundo, for real fam?
Damn he put hands on her like she was a man. That shit is not cool. Karma says C Brown will get his.. . Wait.. . Or was that Jay-Z that said that?
honestly i hope someone shoots him…. and that whole std thing im sure its a lie.
just so I am not misunderstood….
I could give a fuck about a Chris Brown or Rihanna…I have never been one to get gassed up about anyone, actor, musician, athlete, or whoever. I will be the first person to stand up and say that putting your hands on a woman is straight up wrong though….I also want to say that I have a fucked up sense of humor, that most would prolly call juvenile….hence the old ass joke that I posted above.
Amen. thank you. and I’m really pissed at news stations for posting the illegal police photo…i mean, even E!news had more integrity than that….
