Growing up, I always had a fascination with the trumpet. My father’s old one sat in the basement and I spent many an afternoon trying to play it. It was a disaster to say the least, as I could never get my lips right to hit the notes and the 3 key note structure bewildered me to no end. My dad always tried to show me but to no avail. So when it came time for me to pick an instrument I went with the saxophone. Although I was more than decent with the sax, a part of me still regrets not trying harder to grasp the trumpet. So anyone who can play it has my utmost respect.
With that being said, Freddie Hubbard’s fresh is much respected in my eyes as we send out an RIP to him and condolences to his family. It’s a shame how death is often the way generations come to learn about an artist. However, the Jazz trumpeter’s life works live on well beyond his time here on earth.
I know there’s a small contingent of you who will recognize “Red Clay” as the sample for Tribe’s “Sucka Nigga.” Going a step further, we wanted to give you something from his discography to either acquaint or reacquaint you. This collection was one assembled during his brief time at Columbia Records. Released in 1980, it covers a wide range of material & forms — from straight ahead to jazz funk. With it, you’ll get a small sampling of the music that left a marked influence on his peers & fans alike.

I played trumpet in high-school, very cool instrument once you get the hang of it. A true musical great, RIP for real.

The Liquid Love cover used to trip me out when I was a shorty. Didn’t know what to make of it.
Red Clay was the sh*t. First time I heard it, it became the soundtrack to a trip to LA prior to Tribe using it. I wanted to sample that joint SO bad, but really couldn’t figure out how to freak it at the time.
