I had a really good day Thursday.
I have dreams, as we all do, and it was one of those special days where I took one step closer to my dreams. It was a small step, but a step nonetheless and I was feeling pretty damn good about myself. I was so happy that I even posted about it on my twitter account.
Mid-way through my second post though, I was interrupted by a familiar sound that I hadn’t heard in a while. The distinct “pop” made me roll off my bed and lay on the floor. It was the sound of gunshots coming from outside my window. Usually, I have been lucky enough to be far away enough from these gunshots in the past that it never affected me. Five houses away is plenty to not worry about the sounds. Only once was the house ever hit with anything and it was just the garage window.
That night, however, was different. There are certain things in life that don’t process while you are experiencing it. Looking back though, the memory is vivid.
While twittering, I was sitting on my bed when I heard the first couple. I jumped off the bed and got below the window sill, keeping my body from being exposed in case a stray might have been coming towards me. More shots rang out in retaliation, which caused me to stupidly rise from my safe haven of brick wall to peek out at the action. The image that I saw is still stuck in my head twenty minutes later. A teenager holding a handgun firing straight ahead towards an obvious enemy. Flashes of light continued to occur for the seconds that I was still standing, but it felt like ten minutes.
The kid had no sense of guilt on his face as he fired these shots. He stood there with the poise of a soldier at war. It was a difficult thing to witness taking place across the street from where you sleep at night. I ducked back down while the bangs and flashes continued for another minute or two. Finally, the sounds of car tires leaving there mark on the street filled my ears. It was over and within minutes the parade of emergency vehicles made there way into the streets. Police began taping up the surrounding area as they looked for shells, and the ambulance began to do their job of packing an injured person into the back of their van.
The most horrifying part of this story for me though, is not about my own safety, or my own surroundings. It is the fact that we are not the only city plagued with this streak of violence that seems to be so prevalent in our country. It is the fact that I see children under the age of eight walk into the same residential court wheret the shots occurred at and know that they could have been hit in this pointless act of violence. It’s the fact that our politicians do next to nothing to stop these types of occurrences from happening in our neighborhoods and we are left defenseless.
So while I am glad that change is in the air on a national level, we can’t expect Obama or the powers that be in D.C. to change everything. We need to take it upon ourselves as a people to raise our children better and not let this indifferent, violent acts continue on in our society.
Please.

glad you and yours were safe…
Thanks man..
Good read…
I find it just as scary that by the ages of 8 and such, many kids are already desensitized to the sound of gunfire.
That sh*t just ain’t right.
Damn man, that’s crazy. Glad to hear you’re safe. It’s crazy how cold-hearted kids can get at such a young age.

^ I am SO glad you are reiterating EXACTLY how I feel.
Obama’s rise to power is symbolic and exemplary because it took a concerted effort to accomplish the goal of getting him into office.
It’ll take that same unified effort on a local scale to bring about change in the community.
Now is not the time for complacency.
good read, but more importantly glad to hear/read you and your family are ok
Man that photo scared me.
I thought that was your crib, K1NG.
I’m very relieved that you’re safe… and I hope that brother that was shooting AND the one that he was shooting at can get their life together.
Agreed. Unfortunately, these type of things happen everyday. Glad to hear that you’re safe though.
Glad your ok.. but peeping out during the shooting is asking for a bullet.
side note.. looks like the Nice and Smooth got pulled.. can I get a quick re-up on that?

Whattup Contra, good read man. Between this and your police problems, I feel terrible for coming at you on the Uplift piece. I live in a pretty “hip” area, so I’m probably a little sensitive to the overly competitive music conversations, but I’ve also told a hipster in a PE shirt “Don’t believe the hype” and gotten nothing but blank stares, so I definitely feel you.
BTW, Rorschach analogy is pretty money. Pretty Ricky and Butta Creme will look up and shout “Save us!”…and I’ll look down and whisper “No.”
Damn I don’t know why I thought this was Contra. Good read regardless.
Its going to take everyone to stop gun violence. From the politicans making and enforcing tougher gun laws. No matter how much money they will lose from Gun Lobbist. It will take the community to come together to care and protect their communities. It will take the police to become more active in the communtiy again. As everyone else has said, glad you and your family were not hurt.
What’s up K1NG, glad to hear you’re all good. I’m in a similar predictament, my block is always for lack of a better word “hot” although all the goons on the block know me and my girl ain’t on that shit so they let us be as well as anyone else who is minding their own, but them rival mufuggas from a few blocks over come on my shit all the time starting trouble with those cats and ish gets hectic, probably not a week passes where I’m not hearing gun shots, if not directly on my block than at least within a couple blocks you hear the echo of the shit. I’m actually breaking my lease on my apartment in the spring when it warms up and trying to move, I’m too old to have to be stressed out about mufuggas shooting up the block and me or my girl or any innocent mufugga being caught in the cross fire. Bout to move into one of them bougie cribs in a gated apartment complex with security and the whole nine, fuck the bullshit, security cameras and everything.
Thanks to everyone..
@El Rosado
It’s kinda crazy because when i was younger my street was a little more like yours, but they cleaned it up really well a while back. But now it seems like things are coming back again. The 7-11 up the block has gotten robbed like 6 times in the last three months and there has been alot of “activity” in the courts.. But i’m not gonna act like my street is scary to walk down (at least for me)… It’s just got some gang issues that need to be resolved..
@ Bigga
I agree.. Problem is, it’s hard to take a stance in your community when the shit is going down like that because of fear of retribution.. I think the cops have the WRONG kind of presence in our neighborhoods.. Only out to catch someone.. Never there in peace.. This issue has been decades long though.. Who knows what it will really take for this type of shit to end.. If it ever will..

That’s some real shit right there man, fucking truth.
My other thing is cops always have this hard-ass facade.
Now I know they got a stressful gig and gotta be ready to draw heat at a moments notice, but being icey towards the public isn’t good for building trust and confidence in them protecting us either.
Whatever happened to the officer friendly’s???
But i’m not gonna act like my street is scary to walk down (at least for me)… It’s just got some gang issues that need to be resolved..

Yeah that’s my shit in a nutshell, the dudes who are banging and live on the block are not scary and don’t fuck with people. They’re actually mad respectful and mad cool, like I mentioned in another post, I sit and bullshit with them about music and put em on to shit I know they aint checking for cause they aint on the internet. They’re mad peaceful in the sense that they respect the right of everyone else who aint banging to live on that block in peace and without fear of being harrassed by a neighbor. The problem is like I said, mufuggas from a couple blocks over or different blocks coming to my block to start trouble, that’s when shit pops off and get’s OC.
