When it comes down to it, Blu is probably the best rapper out of the up and comers. He might not have the most mainstream acceptable music, but you’d be hard pressed to find a subpar verse from the Southern California resident. His lyricism has shined through on each of his three retail albums he’s put out in the last two years, regardless of your feelings on the production.
His most accessible album to date has to be Below The Heavens, which was the highlight of the independent scene for 2007. The LP paired him up with the MPC2000 equipped Exile to craft him an album full of beautiful soul samples to pour his heart over with his uniquely laid back flow.
Well, due to some digging around the net and a suggestion from a fellow Blu supporter I came across a track from Exile’s 2006 album Dirty Science that opens with an absolutely amazing opening verse from the L.A. resident that makes me anticipate what’s next for him in 2009.
“I’m trying to find my way out of this, living at home
Trying to find out who my father is, sitting alone
Bumping Common Sense, blown
Not off the chronic, but off the knowledge in his dome
Still astonished, but I gotta move on
See, my mother thinks my problem is I really ain’t accomplish shit
21 without a car scarred without a scholarship
some days I don’t eat all I got is pocket lint
I walk around with cold feet and I’m thinner than my wallet is
But she don’t realize her son is five times dominant
as most dudes she honorin’ but she don’t see the prominence
probably fuck around and change the world like Bob Marley did
My talents apparent, but it’s fatherless, so how she gonna acknowledge it?
I hate running away from my problems without solving it proper
And I don’t wanna be a doctor
I just wanna be the father that my father never bothered to be
My son will never have to follow the streets, his role model is me…”
Exile Feat. Blu, Donel Smokes, Ca$hius King & Jontel – “Maintain”

No. But Close.
I’m definitely checking for Blu, in 09.
My 2009 watch-list is shaping up as follows in no particular order…
Mikkey Halsted, WALE!!!, Blu, Drake, Colin Munroe, Asher Roth, Kid Cudi. In my forever waiting on an album category the NEVUARY 31ST award goes to Saigon… who edges out Dr.Dre for the win.
For my cinderella victory I have a toss up between either Joe Budden or Joell Ortiz delivering a FIVE MIC (ORIGINAL SOURCE NOT NEW BULLSHIT SOURCE) worthy album.
PS Can someone please tell me a good Charles Hamilton song? His name keeps getting brought up but I have yet to hear anything from him that I would consider purchasing or even giving away for free.
Blu’s been setting himself up to crush the industry since 2006.
but since you brought up that Maintain track…
CashUsKing’s verse on there,
to me,
SMASHES on everyone else on the track…
a good part of it is his delivery, but here’s my rough, on the spot transcription….
I gotta get up outta here, i’m a prisoner of pain
i’m a captive to a mind, life is driven insane,
its like i’m living for the minute that this livin’s explained,
i gotta know, if after livin will our spirit remain?
why we hug up on the block and raise our kids in the game?
and why once we live once we never livin’ again?
why my pops shot up the deuce and what it did to his veins, was it needles from a victim that was inflicted with aids?
is this the reason that he got it? you know why i suppose
i dont know, but i know its like a knife in my soul
its real talk, i aint sure about the life thats beyond
and i dont understand our people why we fighting amongst
ourselves, god help us we aint right in the head
and i be dreaming about my problems every night in the bed
i be thinking about my path and shit, a nigga feeling passionate
at the same time erased by the past, i can’t get past this shit
and looking back on it, ain’t nothing to say
i’m too wrapped up in the pain i feel its numbing embrace,
i get a flash of them streets and what they done to my face,
and when he beat me to my knees he had a gun in his waist,
but the beating that i took it wasn’t nothing to take,
trust me, he’d have to kill me if he done it today,
i ain’t never been no coward fuck that running away,
you only catch a nigga runnin when there’s something to chase
its young co$$
Blu is that dude.
Damn I gotta listen to this joint!!
*Turns up Blu’ s Mars while downloading*
Spacejive is that iddish, word to Median.
BLU!!!
In my Top 5 All Time. The man knows words, beats and rhymes better than the best.
When it comes down to it, Blu is probably the best rapper out of the up and comers.

Joell Ortiz all day
Any mention of Blu always garners a comment from the lovely LC.
And likewise the less lovely GD.
I’m definitely going to have to agree with LC on this one. Easily on my Top 5 All Time list. The kid is a fucking heavy weight and everyone respect that fact. And to think, last year, I almost deleted “Below the Heavens” from my computer from lack of room THREE TIMES (would delete it from my iTunes but keep it on my computer, put it back on my iTunes, repeat as necessary). The fuck was I thinking?
Also, I’m sorry for referring to myself in third person in this comment.
i’ve yet to hear a bad verse out of this guy…dude is just always on
Damn, those are some strong words from LC and GD! I have been checking for Blu a lot lately though.
dope dope joint
dope dope artist i would have to agree with LC Top five for sure. he takes themes accessible to everyone and flips that ish on tight beats. I really need to see him up in concert
Kid Cudi, Joell Ortiz and definitely royce even tho he has been signed to major labels….
He’s good, but not that good, but yes he does stand out amongst the up and coming pack.

Tried to buy a copy of Below The Heavens last week. That shit is $90! My feelings were crushed.
I tried to get a copy of Johnson & Jonson, I think it’s sold out right now. But Blu is that dude. What up Rome.
Did Below The Heavens ever get a review on here??

My favourite album of recent years…

Dl’ ing this right now.
Kinda funny because I gave “Below The Heavens a spin just yesterday.
It’s a good solid album. Looking forward to seeing more of the kid Blu in the future.
RMF!
@ GD
Apparently they stopped pressing copies of Below the Heavens and those bastards at Amazon are selling new and used copies for $99. Isn’t Capitalism grand!!
What’s crazier is that they are selling the MP3′s for 7 bucks. They keep up these practices they are going to send the CD to the same graveyard they are trying to send Vinyl.
Thx for this.
I’ve been playing Blu’s Mr Blu song almost daily since you posted it.
Cheers
thank you thank you thank you for giving the BridgeTown, USA kid a look and giving him some pub…
i completely agree that Blu is the best of the up & comers (unless youre from the LA/South Bay, CA in which case, Blu aint no up & comer)
KOOCHIE MONSTAZ!!!!!!!
Tried to buy a copy of Below The Heavens last week. That shit is $90! My feelings were crushed.

Same here. I looked it up on Amazon, and it was priced 90 bucks. I think it was being sold out of Japan or something. There is no way in hell I’m gonna cough up 90 bucks for no damn cd. No matter how good it is.
But overall, Below The Heavens is a classic. I still listen to it on my ipod on the regular.
When I saw this last week, I was heartbroken. Below the Heavens costed $99 plus s/h.

Blu has a great ear for selecting music. He’s calm over beats.
All the little side projects he dabbles into makes him interesting.
Sha, Jay E., Joey, & Gem in no particular order got next though.
I read somewhere Blu has secret myspace pages with unreleased music((c) Percival Fats)
I wonder how many other cats do that.
Someone let me know who else does this & their page.
@ Bigga
Haha. So it seems there’s more truth to my joke then I thought.
Once he makes it big, there will be a re-release (hopefully). One of the only albums I want a hard copy of.
I’ve never seen any of Blu’s cds in stores in my town.
