Hip-Hop is a music that has gone through a variety of different eras, separated by time and geographical location. Luckily with the impact of the internet, regionalism has become a lot less prevalent in the art form and has become much more open to new places. The one place that seems to have been forgotten by the masses though, is the West coast. Aside from big name acts like The Game and Ice Cube, the West coast has been quiet in the mainstream rap world. If this were due to a lack of quality music, it would be understandable, but that just isn’t the case.
They say proof is in the pudding, and in this case the pudding is a mixtape released in 2006 by the incomparable DJ Crazy Toones. The mixtape, which was released through Dubcnn.com, was one of the most slept on gems of it’s year. The only reason I found out about it was through a promotional DVD supporting the project that I found in my local record store in early 2008.
The tape consisted of everything a great mixtape needs; a highly competent DJ who knows how to handle a turntable, a central theme throughout, and enough high profile artists showing up to make it seem like a retail album. The theme is West Coast to its gritty core. With old school MC’s such as MC Ren, King T, and Ice Cube wrecking original and recycled beats together with new school spitters like The Game and Young Maylay, it shows you that while the limelight isn’t being shined on the West, the region still has the talent it takes to hold it down for Hip-Hop.

I love a good calzone
New Mad CJ Mac?! Im on it. Dubcnn puts it down with the mixtapes too. I copped N*gg$r Noize by Skee and Bishop Lamont in 07 and I stay checkin them for the newest G Funk(or whatever you wanna label it).
Im from the East Coast but I been a fan of Cali hiphop since Life Is Too $hort and I think Western music is too street and real for Eastern clubs. We like fantasy over here: Prada, Gucci, Lambos, pop champagen in a depression?! Come on the brothers out West if they talk Lambos or Gucci they got it on the album cover otherwise (and more than) likely they keepin it hood with the used car and the the Nikes!
lol @ wc bizness dude posting a “mixtape” by some dude called “sick calzone”….and then muthafuckas wonder why nobody is checking for the west anymore
